Aww HUNTER QCULLIEGIE HIGH SCHUOL New York City January 11948 I ' in- Long ago when Zeus reigned as king All mortals to his name did singg But the hills, the Woods, the sands, the waters Sang praises to his lovely daughters. To Clio, the hoary mountains told The stories of great men of old, x While Melpomene shed silvery tears IN To hear of their loves, their hopes, their fears. For Terpsichore, the mischievous breeze Whirled and danced through the swaying trees, For Erato, the sun beams kissed each bloom That scented the fields with rich perfume. To Urania and Polyhymnia, the lights Of heaven told of travels through the nights, And of the infinity of the sky Where other worlds are born and die. To Euterpe and Thalia, the laughing brooks Sang of cool and mossy nooks Where the beetle chirps his noisy ode A To his lady-love in her green abode. bb But 'tvvas for Calliope the raging seas Abated, the unruly clouds wept, the ugly bees 5-J, Made honey, and all things brought forth their fruit b To present unto the gracious muse as an epic tribute. Oh, these be the daughters of Zeus, the Muses. Good Clio, Muse of History Who, with your sisters, guided Them in their studies every day, Speak, if you will, to tell us All their story, play-by-play. There are eight stages of Hunteritesg Over each, one Muse presides. The first, or star-gazing, stage Was watched over by Urania, Muse of Astronomy, who now will tell The story of this class' first termf' Stargazers indeed were they, When first they entered Hunter High, Searching for swimming pools, Lunchrooms, and locks that opened, And finding them not, yet hoping still, They turned to their Big Sisters, Who sadly, firmly, answered, 'No'. They held a bazaar and learned of a via, In which stood cisterna. In cinema est aqua, And water is good,- QMago17in ana' Henry,- you've guessed it., Chanting, 'Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of paramecia,' They prepared for midterms. And, once overcoming this obstacle, Were told about finals. Ever optimistic, and ever eager to learn still more Clio: Euterpe: Clio: About their school, they joined Clubs, forums, publications. There was no place in all the school Into which they did not poke their shiny noses. From the G.O. to the Victory Corps, Each group was soon invaded By these brand new Hunterites, Who presently began to feel A growing liking for the school and one another, And it was with real reluctance That they parted for vacation. The second stage of Hunter life Is in Euterpe's care. O Sister, Muse of Lyric lines and Music, How fared they in their second term P These days were happy ones. No longer 'Freshies' were the girls, But, 'Upper Freshmen,' if you please, To smile and say, 'When I was in first term..., A War Stamp Auction yielding more Than any other project in the school Was held, and Ivanhoe shared honors with Major Todd As men of the hour. Chanting, 'Hic, haec, hoc, and lzuius Mendel?' Once again they met the enemy-Exams, And, once again, they made it theirs. All 'tse's' and 'dze's' and glottal stops, And lolling 'l's' and lisps Were carefully eradicated from their speech, And it was 'Bow, bow, bow, Belinda,' X2-3XY, Till their second term was throughf, Now Sophomore Year stretched out before them, And to Terpsichore they were entrusted, To guide their third term into dancing measures. x' Xxgd l if 'ii 1 L tqg, Y x, 1. f f1 . -P -1:1--'UQ' Tex- - P33 ii 0 4, Ki l 2 Terpsichore: Clio: Polyhymnia: Dancing and singing, a spirit of fun Pervaded this Iubilee Term. Hunter's birthday was the occasion, A wonderful show was the high school's present. The junior high's came, saw, and conquered The myriad troubles that beset unwary newcomers, And felt themselves a part of this Class of '48. The first French lcgon uncovered The mystery of asscycz-vous and souligner lc' mot. 'Question marks' sang 'Drink to me only,' While future Chopins wrote only key signatures. Angles and quadrilaterals, parallelograms and planes, Lurked in dark corners, Eager to trap scofiers at Euclid. Suddenly, the dancing ceased, The school mourned Roosevelt. In Memoriam, the term began a chronicle of his life Their spirits brightened as V-E Day was hailed. Finals were met and mastered And summer ended an eventful term. Now speak, O Polyhymnia, Thou Muse of Sacred Verse, And tell of fourth term's great events. Fourth term began in a world at peace. It was a term of 'firsts,' And the class of '48 Soon forgot the lazy summertime. The scrapbook of Roosevelt's life Continued to occupy their spare time. They searched for photos, Clippings, interviews, and articles. That most frightening event, the first Regents, Awaited these terrified Sophs, who listened To warnings and tales with pounding hearts. Social life blossomed. Dances With Stuyvesant began, Clio: Thalia: Clio: Melpomene : WFT, ' While my charges waited till they too could go. And, jubilant that now they would be free of Caesar 'What's that old geezer to us P'-and his Gaul, The Sophomores then took their leave. After Sophomore solemnities, The girls in Thalia's able hands were placed, And she, sweet Muse of Comedy, Taught them the joys of Iunior Year. I, Thalia, Muse of Comedy, Witnessed final fun and frolic Preceding sixth term tragedy. Now term athletes had their hey-dey And bookworms learned to hold a bat, As I observed each sports event. Translating Cicero's orations- This was a new and tedious chore, And to the horror of their teachers, Some girls supported Catiline. An avalanche of new confusing facts attacked them: Physics and its laws of density they found too deep. Oh could their minds but finally Have mastered all the mysteries of matter! The G.O. held a carnivalg Fifth termers eagerly took part. Now 'upper termers' through and through, The girls were ready to go on, And after work and tests galore, This fifth term too did find an end. Fifth term was just a calm before the storm Of sixth, the girls soon learned. And now it is Melpomene, the Tragic Muse, Who tells their talef, This was a term of tragedy for all. Six majors kept them groggy-eyed, MLN arm P V. s H bit, 9 -.'- V I ,V lx 1' , 'lilac J' .I '-J? 4 7 Il'Il.lU.lI1I1ll' 'llflll win, , ffdm,. - 1 . , :V H I fl lu V, . I , .s- i, . V L 7' 4 I . W-7, Clio: Erato: And sleep they learned to live without. Three Regents waited this term's end And, like a sword of Damocles, O'ershadowed every girl. As each red rose must have its thorn, So every thorn a rose must have, ' And soon the Sixth Term County Fair Provided fun fSweet word, almost forgottenj. Dungarees, plaid shirts, and home-baked pies, An atmosphere of country life Helped them forget their cares. But all too soon, dread Regents Week approached, And, wondering how such passions In heavenly breasts could dwell, The girls began to cram. All languages became as Greek to them, And physics, horror to the nth degree. The more they studied, so it seemed, The less they knew. Soon days of hard, hard labor Ceased. Despite all fears and wakeful nights, They had survived the trying test. But all that went before was merely preparation For their Senior Year, which now dawned bright, As Erato, of Lyric and Love Poetry the Muse, Stretched out her arms to them And led them into seventh term. The final lap of this term's Odyssey Is, most of all, a joy to tell. The password of the term was not 'Good-bye,' But 'I'll be Seniorl' Electives- new, intriguing studies- Brightened their scholastic life, As odors of sulfuric acid penetrated every room, And girls became familiar With the insides of friend frog. To Problems of their own, some added O Clio: Calliope: All those of Democracy. Soon preparation for their midterms Found them chanting, '-b iXfb2- 4ac, all to be divided by 2a.' Parabolas, hyperbolas, and 'Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God' kept them awake nights. Foreign policy and parallelopipeds Took second place, however, As soon as tests were out of sight, And dates and dances, proms and parties Took the lead in whispered conversations. Yes, they were growing up, and Moving Up At long, long last into the Senior seats. By far the greatest chapter in the story Of the class of Ianuary, nineteen hundred forty-eight Concerns itself with their eighth term. Speak now, Calliope, For Epic Muse must tell of epic term. The first event of Senior Term That must be chronicled Occurred the day when, marching gaily down the aisles Of Hunter's huge assembly hall, The girls showed to the school their rassled fez, A cheery sign of membership at last In Hunter's Senior Class. Now eighth term members of the G.O. Council Were addressed, 'The honourable Missf And work on Senior Day began. Schoolwork went on, but not as usual, For now the best that each department had to offer Was given to these girls: 1- Aeneas and friend Wilhelm Tell Xere yotecl .lFathers1oi tl1eIYei1r, f I n x M Q gir s so 1 oquizei in am et as non, RAN? u And were chilled according to Macbeth. Labor legislation, they read it by the ream And quaked with fear as they thought of The Comprehensive History Exam to cover five terms' Work. QFor even tests in this great term Were of an epic nature.j New difhculties soon beset the girlsg The matter of an escort for the Prom Became of prime importance to their social life. So half a term slipped by, and Senior Day was there. The term put on its Senior Show, Which featured scenes in California, Cumberland, And little old New York. Two more months of work plus one more group o And lol The climax of four years' endeavor, Graduation, was at hand. In caps and gowns the girls assembled For their last official act as Seniors, And finally they held in hand The token of Commencement Night- Diplomas. Flimsy keepsakes after four such years! So through eight stages they were led, Guided always by a Muse. This then the story of the class of lanuarv '48. This is their story so far, But years still lie ahead, Years full of hidden promise In the world into which they tread. Friendships are not all broken, Memories will remain. Four years at Hunter High School Will return to their thoughts again. Go now, fair Senior Class, Godspeed. You were great! But here's the class of '48. The midterms, the endterms, We have survived. The meetings, the projects, We've supported all the drives, And now we're Seniors at the top, We're the term no one can stop. Seventh term is moving up, Hunter High School, here We come! SING MEDLEY When We Hrst came to Hunter High, Our Mama's were all beaming, But after midterm cards came round Papa woke up screaming! I've got those third term blues- Why didn't Euclid go and climb a big palm tree? I ought to tussle with my bustle, But I wrangle with an angle- 'Tain't his kind of Hgure that is bothering me! We finally reached fifth term, Oh blessed be Fifth term! We all how can Waltz and prance. We've reached that great stage, That wonderful age, When we can all go to the dance! We never dreamed in our short life A term could be so full of strife. Six majors made our hair turn gray We never saw sun or the light of day. We had to pass three Regents tough, Though we all thought one was quite enough. When you reach sixth term- Change schools! MARCHING SONG CRangcr Songj The bugles and drums tell of our advance. The Seniors are coming to take their stands. We're marching todayg We're coming to say: We've caused a sensation In reaching our destination. '48 passed the test, Seniors are quite the best, And heights of glory Now end the story. Our great endeavor Will be remembered forever. So goodbye, Hunter High, We would like to stay, but '48 is on its way! l Sex L 5 E55 ' 't IA f X X 'A Xlly X. is , - Wg Q I .,...,.,..-. -.,. , The 66Annalls Staff wishes to thank The Seniors for selling Boosters, and Their friends for buying them.
