THIRD TERM ln Third Term we were beginning To worry seriously abouT a World WiThouT Men. And we were Told ThaT iT was, as Tar as prom was con- cerned. Our own world was considerably increased by an inTlux oT Te- males Trom junior high school. We were considered old enough To learn The TacTs oT liTe. and in room 93 we Tound ThaT . . . There was a skeleTon in The closeT! We weren'T allowed To walk upsTairs buT were Torced To walk down. A Tew oT The heaven-Tavored Transcended To Paradise Alley Trom Slum Row. Our vocabulary was expanded To include Je ne sais pas and Ich weiss nichT. We learned To love W.P.A. workers, Tor oTTen Their drilling would drown ouT wrong answers, lengThy homework assignmenTs. and The like. CooperaTive living was The Thing Then-whaT wiTh communiTy books, lockers, and desks. Around January we began exchanging Tirm vows oT eTernal Triendship wiTh Those oT us who were being senT up The river. . . . and so wiTh sad hearTs Two classes bid Tarewell To The beloved visTa oT our loTTy Paradise Alley as iT sTands in silenT splendor ouT near The TreighT elevaTors, and wend Their way To The old Alma MaTer down on FirsT Avenue. FOURTH TERM Would you go To a junior prom Tor a dollar. if we could geT a junior prom? A Tew TanaTics were boring jTrom wiThinj The noT-yeT-prom-minded Term, which was Too busy Trying To Tigure beTore Sing day whaT Surrealism could possibly mean. On Sing day we also Told oT Sing-Troubles in our miscellaneous, The BirTh oT a Sing. We came in Third Tor a second Time . . . we were beginning To Think we would never geT any beTTer! A Tew brave girls were wearing lipsTick To school-more Tor moral supporT Than Tor any healThTul appearances. This year everyone was Sharpie g skirTs grew shorTer and color combinaTions wilder. We were becoming more and more aware oT The TraTTic squad-and less and less aware oT The saniTary squad. We had oTTicial period beTore lunch: ThereTore we musT have been idealisTs, Tor we conducTed all our poliTical business on empTy sTomachs! Our big sisTers were selling some TickeTs Tor a play called Alice-SiT by-The-Fire. Those days, They were Talking abouT a new besf-seller called Gone wi+h The Wind and The New Building we were soon To occupy. SECOND TERM ln February we wenT down To The annex. WalTer ruled The elevaTor, and you had To say Nine, please. Those were The days oT The courTesy campaign. BuT courTesy dioln'T peneTraTe To Slum Row lsee Fig. Zl. You ordered milk Through a represenTaTive, and Two scienTiTic second-Termers deTiniTely proved ThaT you could read a book Through The bologna which was buried beTween The bread. This year was our TirsT aTTempT aT Sing. We sang oT Silly Symphonies and Sarah Maria's Day in School, and made a big hif wiTh The more blase upper-classmen. Subway iams and Town- send l-larrisiTes were The biTTer we had To Take along wiTh The sweeT. SkirTs were long and so were The candy-counTer lines. There was a rumor ThaT some movie company had boughT The righTs To Gone wiTh The Wind and ThaT we were soon To geT a New Building. SIXTH TERM So we had The PoeTry ReciTal, and six majors, and Tour regenTs, and spring weaTher in April. Does iT maTTer? ThaT's The year we won Sing!!! You don'T have To ask us To Tell you all abouT iT, iusT Try To sTop us. Did we pracTise in convenTional, sane places as did oTher years? NoT we! We rehearsed in slips in a DemocraTic Club one hoT Sunday aTTernoon and aT a kind mama's house 'Til midnighT anoTher Time. We wroTe Sing words around The reservoir, and sewed cosTumes in cluTTered bedrooms sans shoes. We spenT EasTer vacaTion wiTh moisT brows and drooping coihfeurs inspiraTing. We even called lnTormaTion To see whaT she ThoughT oT our Theme While The CiTy Sleeps. We also picked up a loT oT deTails abouT Peckham's EscorT Bureau Tor our miscellaneous song. lT's a piTy They wenT ouT oT business beTore prom. BUT our name is on The plague ThaT is hidden behind some nondescripT pile oT books somewhere in The library. We had a VicTory Dinner Too. and we've been singing Sing aT every opporTuniTy since. SEVENTH TERM ln sevenTh Term, we were allowed To choose our poison, and our elec- Tives were a consTanT source oT joy-unTil The midTerm marks came back!
