Having transited safely all the vvay to Guantanamo Bay, the real test of navigational skill began. Tvvo or more times each day the navigation team was tested and retested in a array of demanding exercises: piloting through a minefield vvithout a gyroscope, precision anchoring, and lovv-visibility piloting. A great deal vvas learned, and by the last day, OPSXNAV had demonstrated the ability to meet the demands of the exercises. Gn the last attempt, the anchor was dropped pre- cisely on target, the minefield negotiated safely, and fix error4bet'vvee,n CIC-A and the navigation team was far more accurate than expected. 'f All members of the Operations!Navigation Department enjoyed the trip. ln many ways, it is during underway times that these men get to do the job they love. Looking back on the approach of Acapulco, entering San Diego at night, the midnight anchoring off Panama, and the transit of the Devil's Triangle, OPSXNAV came through and did the job that had to be done.
