FRAINIER NATIONAL PARK. , 20 Mar. 73 x 3 Feb. 74 Farewell to Bremerton On the 28th of January l971l, the morning was cold and overcast, and the water calm as l-lUN LEY cast off from Pier ll, Puget Sound, Naval Shipyard. , After ten months of hard work by all hands, HLJNLEY was finally ready for the long awaited cruise to her new home port of Charleston, S.C. A dependents cruise mark- ed the first leg of l-lUNl.EY's Ddyssey. Reminiscing with our families and friends, sharing the memories and results of a year of hard labor and time, made many of us proud, and some relieved that we were' finally on our way to new adventures. l-lUNl.EY will always bear the marks of the 228 ton plus missile magazine conversion. made possible by prefabrication and the worlds largest hammer-head crane. The crane stands asa permanent landmark at Bremerton. Un the 5th of February l971l, as we said a sad farewell to our loved ones and Puget Sound, many of us .thought of the good times enjoyed. Some thought of snow skiing in the Cascades, swimming and fishing in the many lakes and ocean waters, and the guiet week- ends among the cool pines and rain forests of famous Olympic National Park. Others thought of Seattles' fine restaurants, lvar's Captain's Table, the Spaghetti Factory, and the Space Needle at the Seattle Center which stands' as afreminder to the T962 VVorld's Fair. . These thoughtstslowly 'faded as we turned toward the future, looking forward to the liberty ports scheduled along our cruise. i What adventures, people and places un known lay waiting along our cruise to Char- leston? What will our new home be like when we get there? l-low bad will GTIVIO really be? Beknowned the worfld over for it's outstanding seafood restaurants, the Wharf, offered' everything from sidewalk vendors peddling shrimp cocktails to Bipley's Believe lt or Not museum. A few blocks from the Vllharf, The Cannery and Ghiradelli Square beckoned with food, drpink, enter- tainment, and leisurely shopping. Around the Cit street musicians occupied racticall v, D V every corner, with tallent ranging from at three-drum BLACK COMBO to classical Flute- ists. Night-life was abundant in Tl-,lE CITY, and for many, an evenings entertainment included Chamber lVlusic at Ben Johnson's lat the Canneryl, a quiet dinner at Bicco's, and after dinner cocktails at the Top of the lVlark. And for .many others .......... lt included a quick stop at Jack-in-the-Box, followed by a visit to the world famous Condor Club for a SC-3.25-per-drink, two-drink-minimum, rock- music, 44 inch-Carol Doda-Show! llvliss Doda was the first silicone-enhanced topless dancer, which gavea whole new meaning to the phrase Better living through Chemistry. l The lXlorthbeach!Broadway area, llocated in the heart ofChinatownl, offered topless shows, intimate dirty little bookstores , and encounters.',' On the more sedate side, many personnel took advantage of the outlying areas and toured Berkeley, Oakland, and Sausalito, and enjoyed the weekend's beautiful weather amid the scenery of the Golden Gate Park. ln all, it was a very enjoyable weekend, and many men were sad to see l-IUNLEY slip under the Golden Gate and head for open sea. LL BDDT CAMP Departing San Francisco on il February, the crew set to work getting everything ship shape for the two week stay in San Diego. Slipping past Point Loma lighthouse, HUN- LEY entered San Diego l-larbor. Docking at the foot of Broadway gave us the most convenient stepping off point to explore the city and surrounding areas. AM- TBACK and buses were just a short block away from the ship, making it easy to gain access to the many entertaining areas of San Diego. Dne of the areas toured by l-lUNl.EY sailors was the world famous San Diego Zoo. The zoo offers a wide variety of animals including some of the rarest on Earth. While some were taking in the zoo. others found enjoyment at Sea World, home of Shamu, the killer whale. Sea World offers various attractions and performances of seals, sea lions, porpoises, and whales. lf history is your bag, you probably payed a visit to Old Town SanaDiego to see the his- tory and romance of early California. ln Old Town stand many original buildings from the Mexican period before 1846 and the early California period. Some of the Mexican-era adobe buildings date from l825. tlusta few steps from the ship, one could enjoy a two hour harbor cruise or step aboard the Star of India, the oldest merchant vessel afloat today. ' As the sun sets -on SanfDiego, the streets D9CO'ITlG busy with peopleseeking the night life. Some-of' the favorite clubs hit-were The Body Shop, and Micky Finns No. i Speakeasy. No, it vvasn't an act of magic or mumbo jumbo that carried HUNLEY up and dovvn again, but rather a series of locks that are the heart of the Panama Canal. The 50 mile-long canal is a shortcut from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Without it, HUN- LEY and every other ship making the journey vvould have to sail around South America and come back north again-an additional 5,000 miles. The 8-hour trip through the canal vvas a unique experience most of the crevv vvill not see again. The ship anchored near Pan- ama City and took aboard over 150 officers, civilians, dependents and enlisted men either stationed or living in the Canal Zone. Leaving Panama City early in the morning, the ship started its' journey through the lvliraflores and Pedro lvliguel locks vvhere it vvas raised 85 feet. On vve travelled through Galliard Cut, the most difficultvvork of the American engi- neers vvho finished the canal in l9l1l. The cut is a passagevvay through the remnants of the Rocky lVlountai n Chain in Central America. The workers had to cut theirivvay through eight miles of solid rock. Once' out ofthe cut, the ship vvent across Gatun Lake, formed by the damming of the Chagres River. We put on scuba tanks and make brief pilgrimages to coral reefs. But the seas are selective. They enslave only a few and throw the rest back to shore. The sea is a goddess of many moods. She can calm and caress you until you are help- less in her embrace, or she can lash out with frightening, destructive power. As man has explored the seas and learned about the natural phenomena, he has also gradually become aware, albeit reluctantly, of another facet. The enigmas. The seemingly unfathomable mysteries. One of the most frustrating, perplexing mysteries of the oceans is most generally known as the Bermuda Triangle, or, as John Spencer most aptly puts it, the Limbo of the Lost. This particular geographic loca- tion has become a kind of hole in the water through which have disappeared an unbe- lievable number of ships and planes. Many airplanes and ships have disappeared in this vast triangle of Atlantic Ocean, which includes such islands as the Azores, Cuba, Jamaica, l-laiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, West Indies, Bahamas, and hundreds of small is- lands. Well over a thousand people and more than a hundred planes and ships have mysteriously disappeared there, without a trace-no debris, survivors, lifeboats, or oil slicks. lVlost often the ship's current position and time of arrival was radioed. After that, nothing. No further communication of any kind. There are numerous logical poss.ibilities based on scientific knowledge that might ex- plain these happenings. Still they seem too meager. Logical possibilities are not enough, part of the puzzle is always missing. Even a long and diligent study of the Triangle by experts, would not completly remove the shroud of mystery that persists in the Limbo of the Lost. But the crew of l-IUNLEY braved the unknown terrors and mystery of the 'Triangle' to reach our new home. Our safe arrival does not dispell- the memories of irregular radar COYTTHCTS. VISUSI Sightings of turbulent patches of ocean, and strange happenings. EAT YOUR HEART OUT JEANl!!!!!!!! .-,,,, r r Xfx xr f-V .-if ,Xfh f V I 1' ' Em a ! l p W 1- f 2 J F-,' ,u 4' ff , ' KJ J . The city attracts many tourists of all ages year-round, but over Easter Vacation, Eort Lauderdale is invaded by l00,000 or more young people from col- leges, high schools or vvhatever, just dovvn to get avvay from the cold in the northeast and midvvest. This is the rite of spring that vvas immor- talized in the movie Vtll-l ERE THE BOYS ARE starring Connie Erancis. The main object is to soak up the sun las vvell as a fevv beersl and have some fun. l-IUNLEY arrived just before the festivities started and many of the crevv found themselves becoming ardent beach bums. The beaches vvere packed vvith bikini- clad maidens vvho vvere there either to get a tan, svvim in the Atlantic, or make nevv friends. For l-IUNLEY sailors vvho had just come from tvvo vveeks in GTMO, Eort Lauder- dale vvas definately vvhere the GIRLS vvere. l-lUlXlLEY vvas on holiday routine during its stay there, so many of its men could en- joy a typical Easter-week day. By around ll o'clock most of the beach bums land bum- ettesl vvould shake off their hang-overs from the night before and make their vvay dovvn to the beach and grab vvhatever fevv inches of sand remained. After turning a nice shade of red, most of the people vvould make their vvay to their hotels lor l-lotel Hunley l and get ready for the night's forthcoming festivi- ties. In Elorida, many clubs and bars stay open all night. Clubs such as the Button, Elying Machine, and Playpen throbbed vvith heavy rock and gyrating bodies. There vvere a fevv extra-curricular activities, hovvever, Many Hunley-ites vvitnesscd lirst hand the nevv national craze they had read and heard about vvhile in Acapulco and GTMO: STREAKINGI Parading inthe bull vvas very popular vvith the students but not vvith the local police, vvith one such party broken up in front of the venerable Hovvard Johnson's l-lotel. Rad publicity for a vvell-established institution perhaps? T-shirts vvere vvorn vvith slogans such as Member of Olympic Streak- ing Team and Keep on Streakin', Some intelligent members of the Recreation Council decided' that Eort Lauderdale just might be a nice place to have a ship's party, so the Port Everglades Passenger Terminal vvas rented. Teh crevv vvas entertained by the Ro- man Empire and HUlXlLEY's ovvn Groove Makers. Even a fevv of the young ladies in tovvn made their vvay to the party vvhich turned out to be one of the most enjoyable in the ship's history. As HLJIXILEY pulled avvay from the pier on April filth, many sailors looked at the city vvith fond memories, sore feet, red backs and empty pockets, It vvas an experience that vvili be long remembered. Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach.. Even before leaving the ship one could see the giant launching structures and mammoth assembly buildings at Cape Kennedy Space Center which was two miles away. The pace of life there was much more re- laxed when compared to the fast-pulse of Fort Lauderdale. The beaches weren't as big or as crowded, but the excellent surfing conditions and swimming areas drew many l-lunley-ites to the beach. Yes, there were girls in Cocoa Beach too, and most of them were from Florida and were down on the beach more to relax than to live it up so much, consequently they were also friendlier and easier to get to know. . Despite it's relatively small size, the space coast boasts many swinging night spots which were visited by HUNLEY men. Cocoa Beach draws people from the surrounding area who are out to enjoy themselves, and hard rock bands such as PUNCH, which played at George's Galaxy Club, entertained standing- room only crowds. Within a two-hours' drive was Walt Disney World near Orlando. A bus was rented by Special Services and for 58.00 one could enfoy a full day in the Magic Kingdom- ride the monorail, travel with the Pirates of the Caribbean, fly with Peter Pan, or sail down the jungle rivers of the world. And that wash t alll Disney World is much bigger than its counterpart in California and many of the gift shops and restaurants were authentic Spanish villas or Revolutionary War Taverns. Outside of the Magic Kingdom, there was still much to do in the World, lt boasts three resort hotels, one of which allows the mono- rail to glide by diners in the restaurant. There is a camping area for the more adventurous minded with horse-back riding and hiking trails. One day, let alone one week at Disney World is definitely not enough to enjoy all it has to offer, as many crewmembers discov- ered. Ivlany scientific minded land just plain curiousl sailors visited the Kennedy Space Center. One of the main attractions isthe Vehicle Assembly Building which is one of the largest buildings in the world. Approxi- mately 2O men attended the Sky-Lab Wel- come l-lome and Awards Ceremony held in VAB. H.onored guests were the last three Sky-Lab astronauts and many military and civilian dignitaries. Well, that was it. The last stop before Char- leston and time to settle down and get back to work. Considering the suntans that were gained as well as the new friends and experi- ences, most of the crew were rather pleased that they were able to see more of the world and its people. Undervvay, the Officer of the Deck has assistance 24 hours a day from the navigation plotting vvatch and Quartermaster. In critical evolutions, such as entering or leaving port, all of the team is required to be on the bridge. Navigation is both a complex science and demanding arty While the navigator and his chief assistants make the crucial decisions vvith the Commanding Officer, all members of the team learned valuable lessons and gain- ed invaluable experience. Having transited safely all the vvay to Guantanamo Bay, the real test of navigational skill began. Tvvo or more times each day the navigation team was tested and retested in a array of demanding exercises: piloting through a minefield vvithout a gyroscope, precision anchoring, and lovv-visibility piloting. A great deal vvas learned, and by the last day, OPSXNAV had demonstrated the ability to meet the demands of the exercises. Gn the last attempt, the anchor was dropped pre- cisely on target, the minefield negotiated safely, and fix error4bet'vvee,n CIC-A and the navigation team was far more accurate than expected. 'f All members of the Operations!Navigation Department enjoyed the trip. ln many ways, it is during underway times that these men get to do the job they love. Looking back on the approach of Acapulco, entering San Diego at night, the midnight anchoring off Panama, and the transit of the Devil's Triangle, OPSXNAV came through and did the job that had to be done. The ship has traveled many miles, visited many ports and accomplished much in those three years, but certainly during no part did the men of l-IUNLEY work harder nor perform better than in these difficult last months. The conversion saw the shipyard and ship's force dismantle the ship then slowly piece her together again. The crew too was dismantled, and, only four out of ten of the men aboard on Guam visited San Francisco. The short history pictured in this bood cannot hope to tell the whole story of the long hours in training and at General Quarters, the many mandays with cleaning gear, paint brush and brazing torch, and the diligent attention to the equipment, stores and records which went into remolding the ship and her crew into an effective support unit. Whether our efforts were successful will be known only after the first submarine departs on patrol on time and fully ready, but Guantanamo, and the results of the recent inspections are encouraging signs. Of one thing I am certain-l-IUNLEY is back with the Atlantic Fleet-and her sister tenders will soon be following her lead. I hope that each of us will find something in this book to remind us not only of our hard work but also of the more pleasant aspects of the 7,000 mile journey it represents. H. S. CLAY CAPT USN COMMANDING OFFICER .. .,,,..,, W .WW ,wmv I i I 'usS HUNLEY, U I if-nr!-'II'- 3 - ' I 'fQQy I 1 Ships, men, and weapons change, but tradition, which can neither 5 gy be bought nor sold nor created, is a solid rock among shifting sands. I Q' Lord Fraser of North Cape. I U I W The preceeding quote, by a former Commander-In-Chief of the Royal I I Navy, effectively summarizes the theme of I-IUNLEY's CRUISE LOG. I U While the men and machines of ZumvvaIt's Navy bear little resemblance ll ll to those of John Paul Jone's Navy, a common spirit and tradition is V' ' shared between them. Fl ll The lonliness and isolation of a ship at sea, the ring of the ship's 9 W bell, the smoking Iamp, and Bosn's pipe, are all common ground be- l U tween the seaman of the 1970's and his counterpart of the l77O's. I I The cover photo of the CRUISE LOG is a dark contrast study of H II a statue found along the Pacific Coast. Dedicated to the fighting spirit Il of men vvho go dovvn to the sea in ships, it serves as a monument H It to Mariners throughout the world and throughout the ages. The men of q li I-IUNLEY are the inheritofrs of a 'long and proud heritage, and can take il' II pride in contributing their chapter to this worthy and honorable history. I I It is hoped that this CRUISE LOG vvill help you recall your voyage 1 'I in years to come. hu i' xg., g I J JACKSON xi LTJG SC, USN ,I 5 ,PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICER , nillllli fl. 1- lti DRAFT SHOP: DM3' Beck and SN Adams. 1 s 3 - r E B I 1 I S, S, i 4 V 7 5 I SN Phelps, Editor TE L X 5 i . 1 ,- - - 'K I ' -- ' , , .
