Our first concern is with your intellectual develop- ment. We admire a questioning mind and a questing spirit. We believe in a respect for the discipline of sound reasoning with facts adequately and accura- tely observed, intelligently organized and used. We would help you sharpen your critical faculties, en- large and enrich your power for intellectual, ima- ginative, emotional and aesthetic participation in life. To these ends we offer a curriculum in six basic disci- plines, a library rich in the wisdom of past and pre- sent, laboratories for study of the natural world, and an academic life of association between scholar- minds and student-minds both in and out of the classroom.

We believe that our size uniquely balances a cong- enial intimacy of personal associations within a hig- hly qualified, diverse faculty and student body, and that our location uniquely balances an inspirational tranquility within the excitement of a community of scholars. We subscribe to the classical ideal of a sound mind in a sound body. We are concerned with your physical health, growth and development. Our regi- men of work, sleep and play, our diet, our medical, hygienic and athletic programs are all designed to help you realize these aims.
