Cheerleaders Football S5 Varsity Football 1959 was a disappointing season for the Hun gridders, a year in which injuries and hard luck treated the Red Raiders harshly. The prospect of having three members of the All-Delaware Valley first and second team returning along with twelve lettermen, plus a rise in the enrollment, looked en- couraging. Mr. Waterman, the head coach, and Mr. Ball, the assistant coach, anticipated a success- ful campaign. The first game against Pennington, in which the Johnny Huns were heavy favorites, tumed out to be one of horror. Four of Hun's first-string players were not available to the team. I Injuries to Dave Savidge and John Ward had an even worse effect on the team as the season progressed.j Pennington scored four touchdowns and four extra points, while the Red and Black could manage only one touchdown. Hun's lone score resulted from an eighty yard run by Paul Kadlic and a ten yard end sweep by Gary Grover. The Solebury encounter proved to be a more enjoyable affair as Kadlic scored three touch- downs and Grover clipped in with another T.D. The final score was 28-0. Now with the team in high gear Kadlic scored sixteen points and Grover eight in a smashing vic- tory over Gennantown Friends. John Keffer ac- counted for a T.D. and Tom Johnson scored two more points in the 32-8 success. With two straight victories under their belts the players journeyed to Wilmington, Delaware, to face the highly touted Tower Hill array. In this con- test Hun's offense was completely stopped by one of the toughest defenses in prep school competition. The Hnal outcome was a 28-0 whitewash for Hun and the first of four straight losses. Friends Central shut out Hun 14-0 and George School squeezed by with a 12-8 decision, the only tally for the Red and Black being the result of a seventy-three yard pass play from Kadlic to Pat Donohue. John Kef- fer followed through with a P.A.T., good for two markers. The Hnal contest of the season was the finest game the '59 team played, a game in which a break here or there would have reversed the de- cision in Hun's favor. The first half ended 0-0, and the only T.D. scored was registered by Del- barton in the third period, making it 7-0. In the fourth the Raiders were on the march as the clock stopped the game, handing Hun its fifth defeat of the season against only two wins. Wait till next year!
