Athletic Improvements The period from 195 7-60 has been one of rapid improvement and growth for the Hun School athletic program. While winning teams have not been too frequent, the various teams have been growing stronger and more re- spected, and a greater variety of sports has been offered the student body. Some have argued that fewer sports would improve our record, but the school's philosophy - Athletics for every boy - and the individual tastes and differences of democratic youth demand a wide variety of sports. In the past four years lacrosse, fencing, and wrestling have become var- sity sports, and this year swimming has been introduced on a pre-varsity level. Lacrosse has been admitted to the Interstate Lacrosse Conference, and bas- ketball admitted to the Penn-Jersey Conference. J.V. football and soccer have become a permanent reality. Highlights of the past four years include: having the Schoolboy Nationals in Princeton with Hun as the host crew, placing fifth in the 1957 Nationals, winning second place in the 1958 Small Schools Basketball Toumament, collecting two firsts, two seconds, and two thirds in the short span that the school has entered the New jersey Private Schools Wrestling Tournament, achieving a truly winning season in football last year for the first time since 1951, and dominating all-star soccer teams among New jersey prep schools in 1959. The most notable material gains of the past four years for the athletic department are: the six new hardsurfaced tennis courts, two new playing fields, and a new shell for crew. To help govern and direct the athletic program, a qualified athletic di- rector has been hired, to decide athletic policy, a faculty athletic committee has been formed, to suggest improvements in the athletic program, the Ath- letic Council composed of team captains and the Varsity club has been created. Some of the ideas of these various groups have been realized in an expanded intramural program, the introduction of Saturday night athletic events, a new type of letter award, and standardized requirements for earning a letter. When one looks at Hun's athletic future, it seems bright. Every year more of its coaches are full-time members of the faculty. Our much-needed gym Mr. Waterman Athletic Director is foremost in the development plans of the school. No longer are our teams composed primarily post-graduate students. Today's teams are truly student manned - perhaps not always as strong - but more unified and more spirited. 34
