This was lo- cated on Hanover Street. The first teachers were local min- isters. In 1790, the school was moved to another log structure west of the present Lutheran Parish House. This served as the school until it was destroyed by fire in 1817. David Eckstine, who taught here for twenty-two years, is reputed to have been a member of George lN'ashington's personal body guard in the Revolutionary lVar. In 1845, the community was divided into three school dis- tricts, each one with a building. The western one was near the corner of Railroad Street and lN'alnut Allev, the central one was near the corner of Hanover Street and Wlalnut Alley, and the eastern buildind was near Quarry Road. The next known school in Hummelstown was situated on all three floors of the building which later housed Smitlfs Hardware Store and the Post Office and which stood on the site now occupied bv the hardware store.
