She worked at all times that students may know how necessary a good education is, thus causing many to take their high-school career seriously, rather than as a passing fancy. We feel sure that if it had not been for her inspiration, Hummels- town High School could not boast the records which have been established. It is with a feeling of deep regret that we have seen Miss Nye removed from us. We sincerely trust that this small tribute may engrave in the memory of each person the immeasurable work which she has done for us. 3 ,X A ,f f N4 fgggwji-1 51,5 x 7 E: .IIX . g I 4' - ,, -1- -Q. Although the sea had been charted before, this noble craft decided to try a new path. Soon, having elected our Freshman officers, we found ourselves deep in the whirl of social functions-dances, athletics, clubs, debates, and plays. Before we realized it, the first lap of our journey was over, and we neared the coaling station at Sopho- more Class. Here the crew initiated several new helmsmen, including Mr. Hershey, Miss Gillan, and Mr. Sponaugle. We soon chose class rings for those aboard, and then found ourselves posing for Taztler pictures. Now thejunior Class port loomed before us. Having gained in experience, we left harbor valiantly. Our assembly program at Christmas-time gave the public an insight into the ability which we were to dis- play in our Junior Play-a double-feature program, The Marlenburg Necklace and Crashing Society. We followed this with our food sale, which led on to the glamorous Junior-Senior Reception that closed this lap of our journey. Immediately upon setting out on the sea of Senior Class, we found ourselves in a whirlpool of action-a weiner roast, a food sale, Christmas-card sale, wreath sale, class play, Oh, Professor, a second food sale, flower sale, dances, debates, clubs, and athletics. We now stopped for three days at Washington, and set out again, to prepare for Class Day. The big day, Commencement, finally comes. After the Alumni Banquet is over, our diplomas are safe in our possession. With this as our background, we are now ready to embark on a new ship, the U. S. S. Famria. May the pilot Success be with us all! 1 939 3 621126125 TATLER NEWS OF THE WORLD JUNE 2 1949 Mr. Raymond Imhof, famed airplane pilot, won the 35,000 Grand Prize in the Keno races here yesterday. Mr. Ray Look, American Olympic star, gave a short talk to Coach John Fazio's football squad, setting up for them the professional star, Mr. Paul Martin, as the ideal they should follow. Walter Ebersole's band, with Miss Ruth Gruber at the keyboard, and Miss Louise Keller on the vocal interpretations, will be the greatest attraction at the opening of Edward Shuey's 400,' Club tomorrow night. Mr. Shuey's brother William painted the murals, which were highly praised by Mr. Warren Behrens, well-known critic with the American News Syndicate. Leon Fair's Dairies today hired Miss Mary Reigle and Miss Eleanor Young as the head secretaries. Mr. lrvin Ricker has become head auditor of the hrm. Miss Dorothy Yorty, famed poetess, also was present. Mr. Ray Lenker, representing the physical training of youth at West Point, and Mr. Guy Davidson, the training of the mind because of his position as head mathe- matician at Yarvard, will address the Youth of the World Assembly at Kraller Hall tomorrow. Mr. Jay Ney and Mr. Lawrence Gipe will attend the National Farmers' Convention this summer at Denver, Colo. 1939 3 A ' l 4 v.vvrI,' TATLER 127121 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT or THE CLASS or '59 Y X 7E, THE CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND THIRTY-NINE, of Hum- melstovvn High School, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, being of sound mind and body, do hereby publish this document as our last will and testament. ITEM I To the Class of '40, We, the Class of '39, bequeath all our pranks and tricks. If they be wise, they will profit by our example and fail to commit them as a Senior Class. To this group, also, we leave, as an example, our high ideals, hoping that theirs may be similarly set. As a Commercial Class, we leave our cherished positions of faculty secretaries to all coming commercial students. As Academic students, we bequeath our trips to the farm with Mr. Sponaugle, and our translation banners in language classes to each aspiring group. ITEM II Ruth Gruberis musical talent is left to Marguerite Landis, and William Shuey's deep bass voice to Harry Miller. The cherished position of high school chauffeur, held this year by Ray Lenker, Charles Fasnacht, Darvin Patrick, Leon Fair, and John Hocker, is left to Warren Strite, Ralph Bingamen, Charles Brandt, and john Hall. The basketball ability of Mary Bolton and Erma Bell is left to Marguerite Landis and Geraldine Rupert. Paul Martin and Ray Look leave the captaincy of the foot- ball team to Rudolph Petrina. Milton Fretvvell's nonchalance we bequeath to Vivian Fetterman, the talkative- ness of Jeraldine McKissick to Betty Smith, the quietness of Eleanor Young, Irvin Ricker, and Elwood Carlson to Betty Alleman, Rudolph Petrina, and John Horn respectively. Russell Hoerner's ability to solve physics problems goes to all rising physics students. Guy Davidson's ability to sleep at any time is left to Earl Hanclwerk. The ability of Raymond Imhof and Richard Grove of being pests to the opposite sex we leave to John Patrick. Do not be afraid to use it. Esther Shuey's ability as a drum majoress we donate to Sarah Keeney, Louise Keller's cheer-leading to Jean Ebersole. Walter Ebersole's natural leadership is Lawrence Heagy's. John Fazio's position as right-hand man to Mr. Sponaugle We give to John Patrick. Ethel Gingrich's speaking ability we bequeath to William Miller, due to his seemingly unlimited store of excess wordiness in classes. Martha Wolfe's ability to drive is left to Robert Sterner. Finally vve bequeath to the faculty a supply of color restorer for the grey hair we have caused them. We hope future classes will be easier on their endurance. As a good start is essential for a prosperous finish, we certainly had opportunity to be moulded perfectly from the beginning, Half of our present class were tutored by Miss Anna Barclay and the others by the late Miss Elizabeth Price. Showing improvement as we travel in the increasingly hard road of education, there will be a burst of glory as the potential geniuses of the Class of '40 leave the halls of Hummelstown High for the last time. During the first six years we inhabited the grade school building and showed our ability as actors by producing many special holiday playlets. We partic- ipated actively in the presentation of numerous May Day pageants as well as displaying our artful and constructive talents at exhibition time. During this period we were increased in number by the coming of many new pupils to this vicinity. After those years were completed, we realized our dream had come true-we entered the new build- ing. How we had envied the pupils who had the opportunity of this modern haven of education! But hard work was the only way by which to achieve success-in the new building or in the old one. Our first assembly program, on Columbus Day, will always be remembered with pride. We also got our first taste of salesmanship-selling tickets for the Annual Bazaar. At the end of the very eventful eighth-grade year, under the guiding tutelage of the late Miss Annie B. Nye, we celebrated our transfer into High School with a banquet. As verdant Freshmen we piled up a few assets toward our Washington Trip by winning many Parent-Teachers' Association prizes through Mrs. Snyder's perseverance. The Class of '40 purchased their rings during their Sophomore year and also made their debut in the sports circles of our school, many of their athletes showing ability by securing positions on the varsity football, basketball, track and baseball squads. Our first major dproduction, The Boss of the Powderhorn, presente during our Junior year along with our Food Sale, provided funds for us to entertain the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Reception, the important social function of the year. .lf 30 il.. A moral victory was the reward of the boys of the Maroon and White because of holding the League Champions to one touchdown FOOTBALL SEASON, continued Elizabethtown vs. Hummelftown Taking to the road again, the Bulldogs took the privilege of initiating the Elizabethtown gridders to night football, for it was the first waged there. The Maroon and White rallied two times to win by a score of 1343. Lower Paxton vs. Hummelrtown Another staunch rival came to town to battle the Maroon and White under the lights. Scoring heavier than in any other game of the season, the Bulldogs won 19-O, Hummelxtown vs. Biglerville Repeating last year's victory, the Biglerville eleven came through with a one-point margin against the Bulldogs, defeating the Maroon and White 14-13. Hummelitouzn vs. Herrhey Then came the snow, and also the rival Thanksgiving Day clash between the Trojans and Bulldogs. Hershey won the tilt by a score of 26-6. BOYS' JR. Each team is played four times. The season, however, is opened with a game with Palmyra. Coaches Sponaugle and Wil- donger have experienced boys from which to build a nine, since only three of the 1938 squad have graduated. TRACK Under the supervision of Coach Wildonger, these boys, interested in track, were en- tered in the District 3 P. I. A. A, Meet, held at Lancaster, in the newly organized Class C. Since it is no longer a major sport in Hummelstown, not as much emphasis was placed upon it this year. In addition, the candidates had to practice in the mornings, before school opened. Soon you and your classmates will take different roads, and it may be many years before some of you meet again. School- days do not last forever-and when they are past, mem- ories are kept warm by the photographs of friends and pals of the classroom and campus. Your ehums should have a personality portrait of You, and you will prize one of theirs in return. In a year or so you will be glad you took this means of keeping alive the memories of your schooldays. And the home folks will always cherish a portrait of the turning-point in your life. The Graduates ofToday Will Build the New Horizons of Tomorrow Time is not always meas- ured by the tick of a clock or the rotation of a calendar. The hour-glass, the costly chronometer, may have their places in recording the flight of time in a mechanical Way. But time, to be of greatest value, is measured by heart throbs and emotionsg by suc- cesses and failures, by retro- spection of achievements. If we are able to point to paths of progress, we can then measure time at its true value. So our hearts palpitate with pride as we watch you go forth to achieve NEW HORI- ZONS.
