We Want the members of the Parent 'Teachers' Association to know that the students of Humf melstovvn Public Schools are appreciative of the interest shown in them. The Association exerts much influence in the field of the curriculum and in the assumption of a proper attitude toward extrafcurricular ac' tivities. They offer, annually, prizes in essay writing for those who are talented in that particular field. The ParentfTeachers' Association has been very liberal in its do' nations to our school. From time to time it has provided our library with reference books which are used extensively by the student body. An electric victrola was presented to the music department in order that the works of our greatest composers might be fully appreciated. This organization has supplied our patrol boys with raincoats and hats, and has also provided the needed finances for the Summer Recreation Program. Without the support of the ParentfTeachers' Association there would have been less' progress in the securing of adequate funds for buildings, equipment, and the maintenance of our schools. The students of Hummelstovvn High School are indeed grateful for the facilities they have provided, and We sincerely hope that by this editorial of gratitude we will compensate partially for the debt we owe them. Be it ever so humble QME There's no place like home. Seek to possess in this world's goods a little plot of ground and build thereon a house of stone and wood in which you make a home. EKVKE A As you travel along the pathway of life, there are others who are going your Way. A word of encouragement, a helping hand, or even a smile will aid your fellow Wayfarer on his rocky road and bless you a thousand times. g 18 Nj SENICDR CLASS OFFICERS Captain . . .WENDELL JOHNSON First Mate . . .WILLIAM HABBYSHAW Chief Engineer . . .VIOLETTE POGGY Purser . . . .JANE STRIT Our skipper, Wendell Johnson, has been at the helm of the good ship 1937 for four long years. He has skilfully managed to keep us from the rocks and shoals in a hazardous journey through the sea of High School life. He has been very ably assisted by his subordinate officers and crew. By following the lighthouse gleam-DETERMINATION-the skipper and his mates have succeeded in guiding the training ship into the vast sea of life where every member of the crew must face his own responsibility, and pilot his own ship to his individual harbor. 19 RICHARD ISAAC ALLEMAN ACADEMIC NBLOATN Still looking for the guy who invented alarm clocks H Club 3, 4, Ask the Professor IQ The Raff ferty Racket 3, Here Comes Patricia 4, Mixed Chorus 29 Boys' Chorus I, 4g Athletic Association I, 2, 3, Football I, 2, 3, 42 Science Club I, 2, 33 Bazaar Committee 4, Track 2, 3g Basketball CMgr.j 4. Meet one of our future engineers. Dick has to be understood to be really appreciated. He shows a natural ability to twist scientific problems around so that the final answer is always correct. We might add that Bloat cuts no mean figure in football togs, having been a member of the football squad for four years and a member of the Varsity during the last two seasons. Despite the fact that Dick hates to get to school before 8.29, we are sure he'll make a place for himself in the engineering world. KATHRYN ELIZABETH BREHM ACADEMIC NKITTYN Intelligence personified Girls' HifY IQ Ask the Professor IQ The Rafferty Racket 3Q Mixed Chorus I, 2, Girls' Chorus I, 3, 4Q Students' Spirit Society 4g Orchestra I, 2, 3, 45 Tatler Staff 1, 2, 45 Bazaar Committee 4Q Red Cross, I, 2, Library Staff 2, 3, 4Q Symphony Orchestra Club 32 Athletic Association 1, 2, 3, 4. It is said that good things come in small packages and Kitty is no exception to the rule. She may be small, but she's mighty in that she always accomplishes every task she undertakes. Besides taking excellent care of the high school library, Kathryn plays the violin, and participates in many extra-curricular activities. Kitty's ambition is to be an elementary teacher. The class sends her on with its best wishes, for we know she can't help but succeed. 20 FLORENCE MARIE BIEBER ACADEMIC DUTCH A pleasant companion Girls' HifY IQ Ask the Professor IQ Mixed Chorus I, 2g Girls' Chorus I, 2, 3, 43 Students' Spirit Society 4g Tatler Staff 2, 3, 42 Athletic Association I, 2, 3, 4Q Class Treasurer I. Florence Marie Bieber, generally known by the second of these three names, is a prominent academic student who intends to take up home economics, when the doors of Hummelstown High are closed to her. We wonder why? Did you ever hear her speak of Harrisburg with a farfaway look in her eyes? We are sure that is where her chief interests lie. Well, no matter what her interests may be, she has our sincere wishes for success in the future. May life treat you well, Dutch. WILLIAM HENRY DIEFENDERFER ACADEMIC BILL A scholar and a gentleman Boys' Chorus 4Q Athletic Association 2, 3, 4g H Club 4Q Football Manager 4Q Science Club 1, 2. Where's 'Whizzie Willie'? Oh, over in the Lab., I guess. Whenever you don't see Bill around, you know he's in the Lab. doing an experiment or cleaning up. This boy will be given plenty of attention in future years, and, inciden' tally, Einstein will have to get busy thinking up tougher problems than the fourth dimension, if he wants to keep this lad down. Bill makes it a habit to keep in a happyfgoflucky spirit and we know this will see him through many tough spots in the future. CAROLINE GOEHMANN FOX ACADEMIC CARoLYN Pressing toward her goal Class Treasurer 2, Girls' HifY IQ Ask the Professor IQ Mixed Chorus IQ Girls' Chorus 1, 3, 4g Students' Spirit Society 4, Athletic Association 1, 2, 3, 4g Tatler Staff 3, 4g Bazaar Committee 4, Red Cross rg Here Comes Patricia 4, Symphony Orchestra Club 3. Always willing, always working accurately, describe Caroline's personality. She is quiet and demure, but not everyone can realize just what lies behind this silence. She is the only remaining Senior taking Latin, but her success is evident. Caroline's ambition 'is to become a dietitian. In the years to come we will find Caroline's name among the alumnae of several important colleges. We predict a pleasant and happy future for her. A boy who thoroughly believes action speaks louder than words, that's Gink. One never bears much of him, but he is likely to pop up anywhere that you least expect him. His interests lie in football, dramatics and music, he has shown his ability in the latter by his fine manipulation of the melophone. Ralph intends to develop his education by attending business college in preparation for teaching commercial subjects. Gink seems to have plenty of ambition, so here's wishing him barrels of luck. LEOTA BERNICE FUNKHOUSER CoMMaRcrAr. LnorA Sober, steadfast, and demu're Ask the Professor IQ Mixed Chorus rg Girls' Chorus 2, Banking Staff 4. lf you chance to meet a tall, slender maiden who greets you with a smile, you know it is Leota. She is always a willing worker, well liked, and admired by all. She is a member of the commercial section and her future work will be along those lines, as she wishes to be a private secretary. Whatever she does we know it will be done well. If you ever hear snatches of songs coming from some part of the room, you are sure to End Anita, for she uses this method to get rid of her excess energy of which she seems to possess an unlimited amount. Neets is one of our humorous members, who make you feel that life is worth living. After leaving H. H. S., she intends to pursue a career of interior decorating. We predict a promising future for such a pleasant per' sonality. Who's that coming down the street? is the come ment made by all the lassies when they see a handsome, well-built laddie briskly stepping down the street. Bill is noted for his good nature and fiery red hair, and he has the gift of making himself at ease wherever he may be. We are confident that Bill will reach the top. You hear a deep bass voice, like distant thunder, then you hear the class roar, you can het a fivefspot to a safetyfpin that Kinley has spread his latest gag. Fellows of this type are the ones who make school days so interesting. This lad used to be a shy, backward boy, but time marches on and leaves Kinley one of the most popular boys of our class. Wilbur has ambi- tions to become a dairy farmer. Lots of luck to you, Wilbur. 22 WENDELL TAYLOR JOHNSON ACADEMIC 'ToAn A king of gridiron-strong and swift Class President 1, 2, 3, 4, H Club 2, 3, 4, Ask the Professor IQ Betty Lou 22 The Rafferty Racket 3, Here Comes Patricia 4, Boys' Chorus 42 Band 1, 2, Orchestra 1, 2, 3, 4, Athletic Association 1,' 2, 3, 4Q Tatler Staff 4Q Football 1, 2, 3, 4, Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4Q Baseball 1, 21 Bazaar Committee 4Q Jazz Orchestra 1, 2, 3g Track 1, 2, 3, Student Cabinet 2, 3, 4Q Tennis 32 Blow Me Down 4. Luther is one of our quietest boys, although he does manage to express himself when problems of interest arise in class. Bats is interested in many organizations of the school, and specializes in making trumpets stand up and beg. Luther is Mr. Hershey's secretary, but, oh, those papers he gives him to correct would provoke a saint. Luther has lots of friends and we are sure that he will make many more when he adjusts himself in the commercial world. Her future seems very bright, but getting back to the present, Spunky works diligently at her studies, acts as manager of the girls' basketball team, and skates during her leisure time at the Hershey Sports Arena. She is quite a busy lass who is bound to be rewarded for her unceasing efforts. 24 VIOLETTE ELIZABETH POGGY ACADEMIC PoPEYB A smile is her constant companion Class VicefPresident IQ Class Secretary 4, Debate 1, 2, 3, 4, Girls' Hi-Y 1, 2, Oratorical Contest 1, 2, 3, 4, Ask the Professor IQ The Rafferty Racket 3, Mixed Chorus IQ Girls' Chorus I, 3, 4, Student Spirit Society 4, Tatler Staff 2, 3, 4, Maroon and White 1, 2, 3, 4, Student Cabinet 3, 4g Here Comes Patricia 4, Athletic Association 4, Blow Me Down 4. X KX X A s fx yi -ss 'ss W-U - msn-.mi sm CLASS HISTORY OUR years ago we jubilantly began our highfschool course as a motley crowd of Pea green Freshmen. Everything was so different, yet everyone seemed to expect so much of us. We managed, however, to make quite a success of our first year in this novel undertaking, and many of us began to take leading parts in athletics, music, journalism, and debate. When the second term rolled 'round we were better acquainted with the rules and regulations. We felt that our position had been elevated considerably above that of the lowly Freshmen. The talents of our students were shown to a more marked degree, and by the end of the year we were sure that there wasn't much more to learn. We were soon to find out differently. How time flies! Cur third year in high school! We are now known as Jolly juniors. And we mean jolly, with Mr. Bell for Class Adviser. But all was not fun and mirth. This year we held our first foodfsale, presented our first play-- The Rafferty Racket - and concentrated on the JuniorfSenior Reception, which was held in great splendor at the Lebanon Country Club. It was soon time to put away our books and pencils until our fourth and last year should begin. We entered H. H. S. in September of 1936 with the satisfaction that the year for which we had been striving so long had at last arrived. We realized our position and as a result became quite dignihed. We elected Wendell Johnson Class President for the fourth time. Miss Zoll was our Adviser. We sold candy, sponsored foodfsales, presented Here Comes Patricia, and prepared for our Washington Trip. The last time that we will allbbe together will be at our Commencement exercise, when, upon receiving our diplomas, we will realize that our schooldays have come to a close. As we now look back on the pleasant experiences which we have had together, the days of joy and sadness which we have shared, it is with a tinge of regret that we say goodfby to our schoolmates whom we so dearly love, and whom we will forever cherish in our memories. 28 THE HUMMELSTOWN TIMES, Friday, May I5, 1952 FAMOUS ORCHESTRA AT ROYAL. ROBERT BOLTON HE class of IQ38 entered the High School as Freshmen in the fall of IQ34, with a total enrollment of 78. Miss Buffington and Mr. Mitchell were our homefroom teachers. We were under the supervision of a new Supervising Principal, Mr. C. A. Kissell. Schoolflife was made a new adventure with the introduction of new subjects. Although our courses progressed rapidly, and few pupils failed, the enrollment for the Sophomore class had diminished to 64. As Sophomores we were divided into two separate classes, with the Commercials in Room 16 under the supervision of Miss Zoll, and the Academics in Room II under the jurisdiction of Mr. Jacks. Since we were more accustomed to the ways of our school, we fell into line and took part in many activities. Our class, now being represented in the Student Cabinet by two members, began to see our position and felt the responsibility which would be Ours in the two years to follow. Returning in the fall of this year we found many changes in the teaching staff. Our class was large, so we were put in Room I4 with a new teacher, Miss Gillan, in charge. This term many of us took part in the Annual Bazaar. The next great adventure was our first food sale, which turned out to be a great success. We closed the year with a jolly Christmas celebration. Returning in 1937, we are looking forward to our class play and the reception for the Seniors at the close of the term. COLORS: Blue and Silver FLOWER! Hummelstown High School is gradually emerging from the dark era of lack of school spirit. The oldftime spirit of H. H. S. is once more returning to the cherished position it once held. There is no doubt left in our minds that the girls' championship basketball team of last year was the instrumental factor in the change. It was this which proved to be the steppingfstone to the rebuilding of our spirit. This new spirit prevailed throughout the remainder of the year. When the present school term was started, steps were taken to increase the flame of that spirit and plans were made to preserve what we had left. More time was spent in cheering during assemblies and pep meetings. Probably the most tactful and most beneficial move was the organizing of the Student Spirit Society. This club, which has performed miracles toward improving our school spirit, consists of any members of the Junior or Senior High School who express their desire to join its ranks and profit by its savings, and at the same time show that they are interested in their school. The fees to the games are small and, in return, the members are required to march with the band to football games and to participate in organized cheering. This organization has an ideal purpose as its aim and the Class of 1937 hopes that it will strive to further its commendable achievements. In conclusion may each student of Hummelstown High School keep increasing their interest in the school functions and remember that school spirit will always pay big dividends. THE FOOTBALL SEASON O SUMMARIZE the IQ36 football season in a few words would be a diflicult task for even such experienced sports writers as Stan Baumgartner or Nobe Frank, but to quote the conf sensus gained by interviewing a number of representative fans we will use only two words to describe it. Those words are: Quite successful! The reasons advanced for this statement are as follows: The entire squad learned the basic and fundamental principles of the game. The spirit of the individual to cooperate with the group and with Coach Sponaugle was most note' worthy throughout the season. The lighting traits of the Bulldog were in evidence when handicapped by weight and numbers. The season was not marred by injuries. Success is not always measured by the battles won. The staff extends congratulations to Coach Sponaugle for the splendid showing he has made in his first year as coach of the Hummelstown Bulldogs. May next year bring him even more glory. The following is a brief resume of the games: Hummelstown vs. Susquehanna Susquehanna came to the local field with a heavy and well-experienced eleven to initiate our football season. Throughout the game the play was fast and hard. After receiving the kickoff, Hummelstown made a few yards. Then one of the backs went wild and ran 60 yards for the first touchdown of the season. The extra point was made by a line trick. The locals scored only one more time by virtue of a safety in the second quarter. But Hummelstown had the decided edge in this contest, through their sharp offensive and defensive play. All in all, the game was one of the season's best. Great credit goes to the boys who made Hummelstown's nrst win since 1934. Score: Hummelstown, og Susquehanna, o. . Lemoyne vs. Hummelstown Lemoyne came here with one of the greatest teams in their history. Displaying superior line strength they subdued the Bulldogs I3-7. Hummelstown vs. Dunrannon The destroying Bulldogs from good ole H. H. S. defeated a light but willing Duncannon squad I3 O. H l46l Enola vs. Hummelstown This was the first trip to foreign soil. Here the Bulldogs faced a machine that was to end the season undefeated and as a championship squad. Minus two varsity men, the Maroon and White fought overwhelming odds to be defeated 57-O. Hummelstown vs. Camp Hill . Camp Hill received the kickoff and drove through the line to score in the first few minutes of play. Many times Hummelstown penetrated deep into Camp Hill's territory but was unable to score. In the last few minutes of play Camp Hill intercepted one of our passes and advanced the ball to the zofyard line. With one more play in the game, Camp Hill spotted a weak spot in our backlield. They immediately threw a pass which resulted in a touchdown. Score: 1 3-o. Middletown vs. Hummelstown This game, always full of rivalry and color, was lost to the Lower Dauphin County Champions. Score: 48-o. Hummelstown vs. New Cumberland Determined to reduce last year's score, the Bulldogs, after recovering from a Erstfperiod rest, held the opponents very valiantly. Score: New Cumberland, 27, Hummelstown, o. Lower Paxton vs. Hummelstown ' This was another hardffought game. Lower Paxton plugged away until they possessed a I4 to 6 victory over the locals, via the aerial route. Hummelstown vs. Hershey Hummelstown, after completing a tough schedule of eight games, traveled to Hershey for the final battle. The Bulldogs, playing smart mechanical as well as inspired football, astonished a capacity crowd that afternoon by completely outwitting and outfighting the experienced Hershey eleven in the first half of the battle. But due to Hershey's man power, Hummelstown was worn down in the second half and thereafter the Trojans bowled over the crippled Bulldogs. The final score does not suggest in any way the type of game the Bulldogs displayed. Final score: Hershey, 31, Hummelstown, o. THE STUDENT SPIRIT SCCIETY The Student Spirit Society is an outgrowth of the Athletic Associations drive for membership. All students who are members of this organization voiced their willingness to march with the band before all home football games, and also to have organized cheering and support for our team. It already boasts a membership of more than no members from the Junior and Senior High Schools. 1. Cheering the boys to victory. 5. Captains-Zerfoss, Hummelstowng 2. Making plans. Conrad, Enola. 3. BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL HE Hummelstown Boys' Basketball squad made a sparkling and unf expected comeback from last year's slump. They displayed one of the best types of basketball ever witnessed on the locals' court. During the first few games the boys had all the earmarks of a championship squad, then misfortune was their lot and they did not reach the highest pinnacle. But the sportsmanship, courage, and faith-- fulness displayed by the squad far exceeded any honorary award that could have been granted them. TENNIS, I Q 3 6 WENDBLL JOHNSON MARSHALL MOUNTZ WILLIAM HABBYSHAW RALPH WALTER EDWARD REIGLE Hummelstown's first season of organized tennis began in 1956. During that year the local lads built up a brilliant reputation by defeating all other teams on our schedule in the Lower Dauphin County section. The first three members of the squad, Edward Reigle, Ralph Walter, and William Habbyshaw, were chosen as the team to represent our school at Mount joy in the District III, P. I. A. A. Championship meet, where they made an excellent showing. Instead of being placed in our class, they were placed in Class A. Overcoming this disadvantage, Reigle and Habbyshaw reached the semiffinals in doubles but were finally defeated by William Penn High School of Harrisburg. TENNIS CLUB . A Tennis has grown by leaps and bounds in popularity and interest in our school. Mr. Paul Hershey, who plays an excellent game, noticed this interest and through his efforts the Tennis Club was organized. The Club is joining the TrifCounty League and will endeavor to up' hold the excellent record established in 1936. Combining the students' love for the game and Mr. Hershey's coaching ability, only a spectacular combination can be seen for 1937. L52l VARSITY KH CLUB 53 Awards MR. E. Z. SCHCDULDAYS e-cs They cement many lasting friendships. Soon you and your classmates will take different roads, and it may be many years before some of you may meet again. Schooldays do not last forever-and when they are past, memories are kept warm by the photo' graphs of friends and pals of the classroom and campus.
