Page ten Class Poem TO THE CLASS OF '15 Re.rpice et Proxpicen When first with hearts coura eous, we did pass Between the portals of our Aima Mater, Thrilled with the hope of future toil rewarded By mem'ry of work already nobly done, We brought awakened minds, and childish eyes, To look with wonder on the world around, And choose the life which lay before us then. And slowly did our minds partake the food Of wisdom's wealth, and comprehensive store Of Knowledge. Slowly did our eyes awaken To behold the vastness of the world, Steiped in ignorance, and dread disease, An superstitious fear, and racking pain Of mind and body. Now, about to leave The door, in strength of powers new, of wealth Of broad, and skillful vision, fit to take The burden from the present weary bearers- Shall we, despairing, shirk our heaven-sent task, Or, strong in soul, continue the crusade To rid this earth of Error's ruthless grasp And Sin's terrific blight P Alpheus, once, The river god, while drifting slowly on His mossy bed, espied the forest nymph Arethusa. She in sudden shyness turned To flee his rippling song of instant love. Faster, faster, fled the nymph, and close Behind the god did speed, until at last, Despairing of escape, Arethusa called U on her fav'ring goddess, who to save The lovely nymph, around her cast a cloud, And bore her to a neighb'ring isle, deemed safe From deity's pursuit, and changed her to A s arkling fountain pure. Alpheus, still Undnaunted, sank beneath the earth, to bore A toilsome way through Pluto's realm of gold And jewels, on beneath the sea to rise Beside the fount of Arethusa, there To mingle her sweet waters and his own- So let us wed ourselves to regal knowledge And seek the pure, the beautiful, the good: That at the close of our appointed day We may possess an understanding infinite To be a true companion to Eternal Life. The last rehearsal in the old Audi- torium, that vast pile, redolent with memories and traditions of classes that have trod upon the rostrum with an unending beat of footsteps! We are dis- missed from our rehearsal, and, awed by the solemnity of the great occasion which is so near, we, meditative, slowly depart, as so many classes have done before. A craving for peace, quiet, solemnity, and solitude creeps over me. As I walk home a shady nook entices me to enter and rest, to pour out my desires and ambitions,my hopes, and longings. Memories, reflection, philosophy! How transient it all seems, how insi ni cant among things yet to' be accomplished! Soothing thoughts steal over me offwork well done, of bright vistas ahead. Then come satisfaction, repose, and finally, sleep. A huge structure looms before me, indefinite in shape, massive. I am awed, terrified, struck dumb. The impressiveness anticipates success or failure, and I hesitate to enter, feeling that here I open or close the gates to Life. As I advance, a sign above the portals spreads large before my eyes: CHOOSE WISELY, ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE! HERE IS PLEASURE, WORK, SUCCESS, FAILURE! WHAT YE BRING IN, THAT YE TAKE OUT! TO CHANGE RESTS WITH YOU WHO ENTER! What responsibilities for one so young, but what opportunities! Lured by curiosity, and a desire to do something, I enter. I am dumfounded! Young people, of whom I am now one, rush about blindly, jostled by superior, arrogant ones. We ex ect to be one of the many and enter into the activities of the mass. The boys who had entered, proud with the knowledge of this step upward, are the first to be disillusioned. Their ego receives a smarting blow. Their ambition to wear the military uniform of their elders is not realized. Their desire to become one of all is crushed. All-everything is lost! We are groping, seeking in the blind- ness, skulking in the halls to make ourselves insignificant. A boy rushes up, shriek- ing madly. Buy a season ticket now! Bring your dollar. Ah! recognition at last! Obediently we all bring our dollars and are handed a ticket, feeling greater, more worldly, splendid. Again we are recognized. Subscribe to the Echo! It's your paper. Help your school! Make your room roo'Z,! All of us bring our gog, Our ambition has been realized, and at last we may carry an Echo. But horrors! The first issue comes out in green! run! green! Dedicated to us, the Freshmen. We skulk into our insignificant seilves, greatly abashed. This torture is not for long. Just as when the spillways of a dam are opened and water rushes in, just so, numberless people rush in and push us out. I flee, but whither, I know not, when, at last I stolp, I nd myself at the foot of a stairway. On the mat MCMXXII is chased in large b ack letters. I rush u the sreg-s. At the top I am met by the same people with whom I had struggled gefore. he faces, the stature, the whole mien seems altered--more mature. Among these pvople, I find myself at home, and feel that I have the duties of the world on my own shoulders. Arrogant and proud, I take my place among the others of my class. Havin settled down to work, we are besieged again by the ticket sellers. Being benefitef greatly by the other experience everyone buys tickets. We go to the. games and see our own team victorious. They win the City Title! Then the State Title! And now they go Page thirty-faur s me ECI-Io-1925 , NMKG2- 407 XX.. A 'X w 1 T1- ff . 1' I an IQ QN 'ilu ' ,qv rx, 41. i-- . f K--3 . What glories, what rewards, what praises, were heaped on the returning victors! And on top of the honors, we are given a holiday. Also we have a wonderful football team to which everyone gives his heartiest support. Again we win the coveted State Title, and we are given the privilege of meeting all our grid-iron heroes, but--no holiday! And still we receive more honors. One of our members is placed on the Echo Staff because of his literary abilities . . . We own the world and scoff at all below us, they, mere pygmies, with whom we must not mingle, forgetting that once we were in the same state. Ah, the fruitful rewards of honest toil! We are jostled ahead by the next crowd, most of us progressing, few being left behind. I tread over another mat, MCMXXIII, and rush up above to reach a cooler atmos- phere, to see more, to satisfy my avid curiosity. But here is the same crowd, slightly older, of more serious countenance. Some more of our number are given places on the Echo staff and we are made conspicuous by some few shining literary stars. Many of us are found on the 3A list, many presidents of clubs, many athletic stars, many actors of great promise and ability. The plays presented are filled with juniors, some taking leading parts. The class is designated as one of the most active and brilliant in the history of the school. Everyone is astounded at such versatility and fears that we are too learned for our years. Still We struggle on 'mid speeches, lectures, and studies. Some make talks before tne whole student body, and add honors to themselves and to the class of 1915. Near the end of our season there is much commotion and bustle. A new system is inaugurated, due to the new state law, makin the study of American History com ulsory rather than elective. A daily paper egins a contest for all Demosthenes, P atos, and Aristotles, in disguise. Our c ass is distin uished by its absence, but, nevertheless we aid by being present at the contest, an heartily giving our su port to the defenders of the Hume-Fogg cause. This ends a glorious and profitablle year and again we aplply ourselves to our books and prepare for our examinations. After everyone as succeeded in motipting and coniquering this great obstacle, a rest from the terrific strain is given to t ose exhauste ones. I ass over .the mat, MCMXXIV, and mount the stairs. The same crowd meets me. he grave mien, low-toned conversation, a feeling of closing doors, is in con- trast with the noisy rabble of my former visits. Again we are one, but now we are recognized and feel very much puffed up and elated over our new station and life takes on a rosy glow. The activities are begun, football, basketball, baseball, track. All the teams are conspicuous by a great lack of men, being due to the strict, but just, ruling of the faculty. Still we make the best of our opportunities, and in the true s irit strive to bring glory to our Alma Mater. Again our basketball team goes to C icago but comes home in defeat, but with honor unsullied. Our girls' team succeeds in reaching the semi-finals, only to be beaten by the winners of the tournament. In the oratorical contest we are well represented. This is the crisis of the last year and now we are met by the finals- The knell that summons us to Heaven or to H-. Owing to the great skill and accomplishments of the whole class, we all pass and are allowed to receive our diplomas. And as we step over the threshold of our building we see a group setting a new mat, brightly emblazoned, MCMXL. I linger gazing at this ma ic number which soon begins to fade from my sight. Surprised I step forward and-awake. Page thirty-fu me ECHO-1925 , NMZ0r4lWRs, W. , . R , , ,, X. ' ea J '- --rad? -,.1f,ff- fl' sg BY MARY Ensras If you have ever had only an hour and a half in which to pack, dress, call a taxi and get to a hangar, you will know exactly what I experienced that afternoon. I had received a radiogram from Nashville, inviting me to the opening of a new in- stitution of learning, at which I was to speak. I was pleasurably excited at the prospect Cthirty years ago, I reflected, I would have been thrilled to death, D for it had been sometime since I had visited the old home town, and I at once prepared to go, much to the consternation of Tabby, and Pollparrot, who protested vigorously against my leaving them. I found a comfortable seat in the aeroplane, despite the fact that I had made no reservations. As I handed my ticket to the conductor, I found myself looking in the face of-why, it was my old classmate, Frank McCall. He told me that he had been on this air-line for several months and that the pilot was also an acquaint- ance, Hendryx Morton. I was much pleased to notice that little Frankie, as a certain dear teacher used to call him, had really grown up in the last thirty years, and was very much a man now. The new school was called Idealia, and was a Utopia of Modern Education. It was especially designed to cope with that new modern problem of making pupils study-of making study a pleasure. Pupils do not study now-a-days, as they did when I went to school. The teachers at Idealia had this as their chief problem. The school was ably principaled jointly by Mr. Thomas Horton and Miss Maudine Scotgt. This much I learned from the catalogue which I read during the ride. At this point in my perusual, the ship landed and I found myself facing the building with Miss Scott coming to meet me. After elfusive greetings, I complimented Maudine an her youthful appearance. You look every bit as young as you did thirty years ago, when we were in school together, my dear, I exclaimed- How do you do it ? Oh, no one looks old here, she answered me. We have used 'Ever-Youth,' Miss Stella Vaughn's discovery, that keeps all of us young. She explained that the faculty was one of the most congenial she knew of- just ideal. For the simple reason that they've know each other for a long time. You know how well our class worked together, back in 192.5 ? Well, I simply found out the addresses of the members of our class, and asked as many of them as possible to contribute to the institution, either by taking positions as teachers, or through their purses. It is surprising how many responded. - I have so-longed to hear from the dear 'twenty-f1vers,' I told her. I should love to see them. Pvsfffv Qhe ECHO 1925 'K ffgyc ,Qi X sw -i ' 4 -'V . ill- Y f' .. I The literary department was the one which I was first shown. There I saw my old friends, Isadore Schulman and Colbert Wynns, who were teaching English Prose and Poetry, and also Olivia Malone. Miss Dorothy Doss was head of the history department, with Misses Ruth Link and Harriette Graham as her assistants. In the French department, I found Misses Melba Wood, Flora Fein, and Leonora Hamilton, who, due to the excellent tutorage of Miss Scoggins, had won much fame for their Parisian accent. I confess I was rather disappointed. Save for the unusual ability of the faculty, this school was just like the rest. Perhaps Miss Scott realized this, for she led the way across the hall to an open door. This, she said calmly, Is the Department of Instruction in the Gentle Art of Flirting. Eyes right, came from the instructress. Now flutter the lashes, and smile. I gasped in surprise-the teacher was Elizabeth Bryant, my old friend of 118! She was assisted by Mr. Martin Collier, and they had only three pupils at the moment, and the pupils-oh, it could not be! Maudine smiled at my astonishment, and explained that the pupils were learning now a few things they had missed back in Hume-Fogg. They allowed their studies to interfere with their schooling, and now they realize it. After taking 'Ever-Youth,' they entered here to take courses in flirting Misses Mildred Davis and Carremaye Evans have charge of the second course of corrider walking. The pupils were Misses Frances Carter, Miriam Garfinkle, and Edmund Rogers. Another very interesting department, was the Good Disposition department. Miss Lois Hooper had sole charge of this. Then there was a Beauty Class headed by Mr. Wilbur Creighton, Mr. Paul Gobel, and Miss Matilda Treanor. Of course they had many helpers, for almost every pupil at Idealia was enrolled there. Miss Louise Shoffner had a group of aspirants to long lashes, and Miss Corinne Williams taught dignity. Misses Evelynn Hooper, Bertha Davidson, and Hannah Bittner taught how to have a beautiful complexion. There was a class in decorum, and many of the instructors were old Hume- Foggers-Miss Rose Cloud, for instance, Miss Rosemary Jenkins and Miss Margaret Bradley. Among their pupils I saw little Mary Greene, Dorothy Keyes, Martha Fisher and Roselle Lawrence who were trying to become more quiet-mannered. The agricultural department interested me much. Their motto was Everything that grows. Marion Brown and Anna Ruth White were in this department raising cows and chickens, and Rosa Lee Beeland had great success with her honey swarms. Gordon Ridge has had several crops of splendid moustaches. Page jifq-one ya Uie ECHO'1925 'K i-li-1 X if .M tx 'x -l-L-1-17 'fc ,ww it . Due to the generosity of Mr. John Bates, now a millionaire bricklayer, they have quite the best in equipment of any modern school. Mr. Jack Hamilton is at the head, with the able assistance of Mr. James Fariss. i Of course Miss Susie Hollins and Mr. jack Gentry were among those present. They had a flourishing class in wit and repartee. In conjunction with this, there was Miss Elizabeth Elterman's class in conversation. After I had seen them all, Miss Scott took me down to the lunch room, where Freda Grundy and Ruth Wood had charge. We enjoyed a delightful lunch that rivalled even those of dear old Hume-Fogg days. Mr. Moses Levitan waited on us. Tell me what you have learned of our old class, Maudine, I begged her. Surely, in getting together so many of the faculty here, you have heard from many. Yes, indeed. Several are abroad. James Bailey has fulfilled his ambition and is living in France, Robert Dunaway is enjoying the old Spanish atmosphere at Madrid. Elizabeth Watkins wrote from England the other day. She is mistress of a manor, and she told me that she had recently heard Sylvan Meyer play before the nobility and also heard Celia Caplan sing. Then, of course, you know that Philip Perkins is living in London. He is a famous artist, and at Paris, there is Herman Strauch. Oh, yes, Daisy Tucker is teaching chemistry in Japan now. Juanita Kenton is in Russia, in charge of a Home for Starving Barbers. Katie Saltz- man is teaching dancing in Hawaii. Martha Carr is also in Russia-she eloped with a violinist. Ruby Newworth is conducting tours to Arabia, and Alice Powrie is touring with the Ward-Belmont girls. Alma Bright is a missionary to Korea. Leona Brent is teaching Vergil in Africa. Elizabeth Figgins is continuing her study of French in Paris. I believe that is all of the Wanderers,-oh no, Frances Marie Leopold is in Australia in search of adventure. Such globe trotters! I never thought they'd scatter like that, did you? I exclaimed. Are the others- Oh, I know what we can do, she interupted eagerly. There is a play tonight at the new Orpheum theatre-John Richardson owns it you know. 'The Forbidden Gum-drop' is being produced by Mr. Granville Fisher, remember him ? The stars are old Hume-Fogg pupils-Bobby Tucker, Walter Dunlap, Sybil Ruth Harris, and others. There are to be vocal solos between acts by Misses Mary Jane White and Dorris Parham and Mr. Harold Read. Also Floranne Levy will dance. Her costumes are gorgeous-from Marguerite Pierce's costume shop. Mary Betty Brock and Fessler Fritz design them, and Elizabeth Vestal is manager of the sewing. Oh, Maudine, weren't you excited when Bubber Quick was elected U. S. President ? Yes, and we weren't the only ones. Eva Binkley immediately sent in applica- tion to be chief cook at the White House, and Margaret Jeffries, the chemist, is the dietician there. Page ffqy-two . So many of them sent him inaugural gifts. I read in the paper that Cooke Settle sent him the latest in radios-he is president of a large company manufacturing them. And John McElroy sent one of his beautiful decorative wax candles-five feet tall, they say, and mar- velous looking-the candle, I mean. Yes, and Margaret Milliken sent him a copy of her latest novel, 'The Secret of the Wet Dishmopf Margaret Andrews sent him one of her American Histories- they say Margaret's History rivals Elson's, even in Miss Dortch's estimation. Lucile Sugg has an antique shop, and the highboy she sent was a beauty. It is even rumored that Paul Ulrich, the Pickle King, sent him a bottle of those delectables, I added. Oh, but I know that Lucy McGaw sent one of those pretty little pin cushions she makes-she made a fortune from them, laughed Miss Scott. Speaking of fortunes, Eldridge Lewis made his in 'Yum Yum' Chewing Gum, and Dora Love and Minnie Jacobs made theirs straightening out radio waves. LeRoy Fottrell's Leakless Fountain Pen has made him a millionaire, while jimmy Dykes owes his fame and money to the 'Rufball, the Football That Won't Slip.' Don't talk about money to a school teacher, I told her, but I must tell you that Ashod Gulbenk has made lots of it with his patent medecine Cura1l, and 'l-Ierman Fluty's Hair Dye is the best on the market-and the most expensive. Lots of us have been successful in just ordinary business, as, for instance, Ethel Seligman is an expression teacher. Alvin Greenoburg owns a laundry, for which Isabelle Markle makes the dearest little laundry bags. Truman Benedict is a preacher, and Maurice Davis owns a department store, and Philip Markle is a radio announcer. Hassie Mary Parkes is a business secretary. Buford Lee is also a successful business man, and John Hemby is manufacturing automobiles as curiosities. I heard some where that Dorris Porges and Frank Cox were still in automobile races. Why don't they buy aeroplanes from Sam and David Cohen and race in those? Oh, its the novely of riding in an automobile, I suppose. Oh, did you know Joseph Epstein is traveling salesman for Hershey's Chocolate ? And Kenneth Parkes and Alton B. Scott are selling artificial flowers made by Mary Browning. Ira Mahlon Ritt is a postmaster at Brentwood. Dorothy Larsen is carrying on Mrs. Winkler's studio work. I suppose you'vc seen Ethelynd Lusky's famous shop on Fifth Avenue P Yes. Speaking of fame, there's Mae Jared, the movie actress. And Flora Bartie the Salad Dressing Queen. Marguerite York has made the world a better place by her beautiful translation of Vergi1's Aenead-joe Luton, by his beautiful plumbing. Pay fifzjy-tbrn Q Uhe ECI-104925 . . I heard that Pearlie Beasley had retired to a convent, for reasons unknown. Also, that James Schneider had gone West, and is a guide at Yellowstone Park. Margaret Elizabeth Jones is West too, in the civil service. She and Esther Swartz were given appointments. Sara McLaughlin is running an air-line to San Francisco from here. So I heard. But we must leave for the play. We want to hear Loren Chastain sing his latest song hit, before the curtain rises. The play was excellent, and we saw many people we knew. Sam Aaron, a successful grocer, was there, and Edith Boling, the world's billiard champion, Elizabeth Doss, the famous diver, and Floyd Martin, State Chemist. William Shutt was an usher and door-keeper at the Orpheum, There were three teachers from the Hume-Fogg High School, Miss Mildred Eagan who succeeded Miss Glase and Lawrence Hopkins who took Cal. Morgan's place and -Mr. Joe Strayhorn, biologist. Mr. Thomas Jarrell, the present editor of Judge, sat near us, and just beyond was Mr. James Crawford, the famous cartoonist. I was thrilled to see in front of us Margaret Coffey, the tennis champion. With her was Miss Frances Bledsoe, a pretty nurse of Vanderbilt Hospital, which institution was further represented by Dr. Allan Pybas, and his assistant Marguerite Womack. Even Judge Winifred Brooks, the legal celebrity, lent her august presence to the assemblage. Garth Kimbrough the president of national Hi. Y. Club was there, with Jesse Ragan, Sewanee football coach. Mr. J. Edward Thacker, Nashville's most prominent business man, with Fred Wingett, his general manager, sat in high-priced seats. Among other persons present were: Misses Helen Lerman and Marian Levant, in charge of the Young Ladies Select Seminary, Misses Bernice McCormack and Elizabeth Thornton, joint owners of a jewelry shop, a very rich banker's wife, formerly Miss Marie: Gerthg Misses Frances and Dorothy Cunningham, Thelma Carey, and bonnie Ross Boner, stenographersg a famous evangelist's wife, formerly Miss Lucille Angel, Miss Eunice Mallory, owner of the Doll Hospital, Mr. Harmon and Walter Graham, farmers in town for the play, Miss Louise Wood, successful book agent, Mr. Robert Briley, caretaker at the Glendale Zoo. There were several young ladies who brought the lucky men along with them, and all seemed to be enjoying matrimonial bliss, formerly Misses Sophie Spitz, Rebecca Waggoner, Inez Bomar, Mary Elizabeth Crandall, Sara Cayce, and Mary Alice Hackney. After the play, of course, we went to the Pink Tea Room, Misses Dorothy Marable, Dorothy Massie, and Gladys Mears-the three M's were in charge. They served delicious sandwiches and mints made by the candy girls, Vera Mai and Mabel Huggins. Page fiff-y-four UA ECHO 1925 'K fps -Cqssa JW' -s cw, ' 'l ,E ' ' ' X ,--za: ff' ,, , -N? .aff '-xx. Why it's 'Local Gossip,' edited by Miss Mary Jane Lowenheim, explained Miss Oman. You probably know some of the staff-there's Ruby Todd, the society editor, and she could tell you a lot about the old class-Francess Goodlette and Virginia Vess, the society matrons, and Shelton Luton, still a desirable bachelor. We have three staff photographers, Misses Etta Kaplan, Ercell Mayo, and Hortense Putnam, Victor Gregory is the head of advertizing department. There are some of the class whom we have not heard about. What of Daniel Stone? we asked. Oh, he's in the circus, 'Stone, the Fat Man.' Alta McMurtry trains beetles for the same circus. And Leah Rose Bernstein ? She's Lebeck's hosiery buyer, was the reply. Frances Burks is Tennessee's most famous lawyer-as I suppose you know. And Charlotte Crichlow is at an army post, I hear. Yes. She finds army life very attractive. A Editorial Read 'em and laugh. That is what we do when we cast our eyes over some of these books telling of events and customs of the past. The antiquity of the things mentioned is enough to make anybody go into hysterics. Again, all have had the pleasure of reading these articles portraying the improvements to be developed in the future The changes which have been made since the twenty or so years have passed of this century, have been extraordinary. They are so marked, and so great that there appears no room for further improvement.. Let us notice for a minute the various developments of these years. We now enjoy radio, by which we listen to noises, Che they simply staticb from miles and miles away, travel is no longer confined to terra firma, automobiles are now as numerous as roads will allow and then some- such an enumeration could cover pages. We have wonderful developments in the world of medicine, until sickness is approaching the point of being an unnecessary inconvenience. Also we have improved greatly on the old things which were handed down from the older generations-huge locomotives have now superseded the primal engines of low power, we erect buildings to scrape the sky in which are housed enough people to form a community, we have even harnessed that age old monster lightning to being our servant. What is there left to do for us who are coming into this realm of labor ? What further improvement is possible ? Let us take the automobile for instance. Books depict the high s eed u tra luxurious cars of the future in a manner which would make one's eyes ulge from their sockets upon looking at them. But in reality, the automobiles of today are comfortable to the last degree, they have noiseless and vibrationless motors, and beautiful bodies. To look on one of these fine products, we may ask ourselves, What improvement could I make on that thing ? It may be that way with everything, every industry. ' Such a viewpoint can be taken concerning almost any pursuit. We, as graduates of high school may find ourselves groping around in the fathomless dark looking for something to em loy our ingenuity. g But it is most highly probable that such an outlook has con ronted every new and prospective business man since Adam first entered Wall Street. But in spite, new and many new inventions and discoveries have developed since that father's advent. When our fathers and mothers saw the beautiful scarlet runabouts bouncing about with their solid tires and sheltered by no covering other than a parasol, even then they marvelled. They believed that the end of the world had come, and there was no use achieving and pursuing any more. Again when the first electric street car, with some ten passengers, actually climbed out of the ulley at the Nashville and Chattanoo a yards, under its own ower, they believe that the next thing after the discard ofg horses and mules would e the passing out of existance of man himself. Look at our present day vehicles, and contrast. Therefore, fellow members of this modern class, let us be up and doing, for the years that have assed in the history of the world are but a minute fraction of the eras to come. hen we look backewe will realize this the more, that there is an infinite amount of improvement to be made before ancient Gabriel blows in the ancient fashion his ancient tuba through his ancient beard, uncared even by an obsolete razor, summoning the last of the future men to the end! He was buried about six months ago and will not be resurrected for about three more,-yet in this noble edition ofthe Echo, dedicated to those departing this school life forever, something must be said concerning theirfeats on the gridiron. Oursuccessful season was due both to those who intend to receive a sheepskin this june and to those who are not yet ready to appear on the stage at the Ryman Auditorium. We would like to give them all the credit due to them but space does not permit, and, too, their time will come in future years when they are 'dignified GD seniors. ' No less than half of our glorious football team-a team which won six out cf eight games, losing only to City and State Champions, and piled up 113 points to their opponents 39, a ratio of a little better than SM to 1-are to leave their Alma Mater this spring, to be seen no more in our spacious corridors. Captain Jesse Ragan has handed the ball to Captain-elect Bill Warwick our star center and dropkicker. Red Curtin with his old grin has fought his last game, and a good game it was, too, in a Blue and White Shirt. Frank Waldrop, known on the sport page and on the gridiron as Cowboy will soon be mentioned as being the star player on a little team of an insignificant military academy located on the Hudson River. Bubber Quick, too, has had a place on many Hume-Fogg teams, being Captain of this year's baseball nine, besides being on the basketball squad also. We are sorry to lose him. Besides these, are many subs, who also deserve mention, for the strength of the first team depends upon the strength of the second. Scores for the season: Hume-Fogg Wallace- - - Hume-Fogg Battle Ground Hume-Fogg .... Clarksville Hume-Fogg Branham and Hughes Hume-Fogg Central .... Here theyrhad bad luck and lost .by only three hard fought for points. Their record for the season was twelveiwins -and five losses. They brought up their score to a sum of 461, a margin of 153 points over their opponents, and were never beaten by more than seven points. This team does not lose so many of its stars, but those it does lose will be surely missed. Besides Captain Red, who has already been given his palm leaf under the football headlines, there is Frank McCall, the biggest Cin two waysj sport, who played a stellar game of guard during the whole season. Besides that, he always helped out the smaller, tho not small, Bubber Quick, on the tip off at center. Yet next year we have Wolf, Lucas, Carrier, Goodman, and McWhirter, so our' prospects are bright. Girls Basketball The girls had an excellent season this past winter, dropping only two contests out of fourteen, and lacked only twenty points of doubling their opponents score. Only two of these girls leave us this June, Misses Burks and Waterson. Both, though while only substitutes, played in many games and were a great help to the team, Next season we will see both the Richters, Misses Cullom, Rankin, Phillips, Carlin, and Husband. These girls make up an excellent team, one which should easily carry away the tropies in the Peabody Tournament, in which this year they lost to Union City by five points, the team which beat Peabody by double that score in the finals. Their closest games were the two with the Peabody lasses, each team taking one by a margin of one point. The city championship was forfeited to us by Peabody when they refused to play the scheduled third game. So this year Hume- Fogg has two champion teams, the Girls as City Leaders and the Boys as State. So many hopeful boys assembled under the leadership of Bubbcr Quick to form a nine. They started out fine until, one line sunshiny day the faculty came along with its rulefingsb. About half of the team was knocked out when the dust settled. Clt was the better half, too.j The other half, that was, hardly half, held a meeting and decided to continue playing and finish out their schedule even though they were beaten in every game. They have had many defeats, some severe, some not so bad, and only a few victories, yet they are clinging grimly on with a never say die spirit, and are still fighting. We, of course, are exceedingly sorry of this curtailment, but the rule that one must pass in three full subjects the preceeding term does not look so hard to stand up under, and so here is hope that next year's team will have better luck, and will be the City Prep Champions. Track The track team has suffered from the same disease which almost overcame the baseball nine. Some of their best men were ineligible on account of scholarship rule, but they have done good work both at Sewanee where they captured sixth place, and at Dudley Stadium in the Middle Tennessee meet, where they carried off first-honors. The sprinters next year will miss the flying Macon as well as Jesse Ragan. No more will Breyer run the mile or Ulrich the half. Yet next year's track team has promising men. Leak and Roark, beside Howard and Patton who, as yet, are Freshmen and show great possibilities. Page Jeurnhjy if MEAT Q fi '95 .3 .A A U fwQ 55gL A. 'ik .A Ai A. The object of this club is to advance art interests, to keep abreast of the times in affairs of art, and to cultivate fellowship among members-professional and fraternal. The programs during the year have consisted of numbers such as the following: How to Study Picturesg Origin of American Artg Sketches of the Lives of American Artists and Paintersg Landscape Painting. Visits to the art exhibit at Carnegie Library, a meeting in the form of a Christmas Party and a delightful party given in honor of the new members stimulated social intercourse among the members of the club. ormclzns Fall and Winter Terms MR. Much credit is due the Williams of the club-William Baker, president, William Warwick, vice president, William Isbell, secretary,--for the work accomplished. Last November the members enjoyed a 'possum hunt during which the club's Silent Hound, did excellent work, for, two 'possums were caught. Especially commended was Jack Gentry's remarkable work, because of which he received the name of Official Tree Skinner. . ' During the City-wide Hi-Y club contest, opened injanuary, ipoints werelawarded for attendance at meetings, for church and Sunday school atten ance, for individual service tasks, and for service tasks performed by the club as a whole. In addition to contributing the Want Column to the Echo, the club put on a Clean-up Cam aign, the object of which was to keep all session rooms in as good order as possible, and to assist the session room teacher whenever needed. The Hi-Y Club of Hume-Fogg was represented at the Murfreesboro Conference by Messrs. William Baker and Wilbur Creighton. They reported this as one of the best conferences that has ever been held, thoroughly enjoyable and instructive. Many interesting programs have been enjoyed by the members of this club, especially the one consisting of Negro Folk Songs, the second of a series of programs on American Music, and the one on the origin and growth of the ItalianO era, and an explanation of later operas which were heard from the Victrola. The other programs consisted of vocal,'piano, and violin solos. -g A spooky Hallowe'en party was enjoyed by the Music Club on November 7, the event taking place at the home of Miss Inez Tolmie. Another interesting social affair was that of Saturday, March I4, on which day the members gave a St. Patrick's tea at the home of Miss Annabelle Brown. The club was honored on several occasions by songs by the renowned Hume- Fogg Boy's Quartet. This has been so successful that there is no member of the club who has not spoken some Spanish at one or another of the meetings. Various and interesting numbers composed the programs for the year. A comedy, The Primal Dispute, was presented to the club by Misses Bernice McCormack and' Dorothy Massey, and Mr. Victor Gregory.
