We were , greeted with a three-day initiation, but we were soon able to adjust ourselves to the routine of school life as we entered whole-heartedly into school affairs. Elpha Schievelbein, Arvid Clemensen, and Lavon Fehlhaber were chosen in the cast of the High School Play, WMama's Baby Boyn, given that year. Mary Tink- ham represented our high school in the humorous divi- sion in the District Declamatory Contest at Valley Springs. Arvid Clemt sen, Ray Peters, Jerry Buus, and Batie Lewin became members of the basketball squad. We also had our fun, sponsoring eight class parties with Mr. Tiede, and his HGliderN, supervising. Rachel Get- zin was our president. The fall of '56 found thirty-five of the forty- one Freshmen of the previous year reenrolling as Soph- omores, chosing Lavon Fehlhaber as president. -Those who left our group from the previous year were: Mike 0'Dea, George Dreyer, Archie Wasner, Venola Crippen, Wayne Smith, and Lavonne Larsen. Miss Nellie Storsve was our adviser and under her leadership we sponsored a successful all High School Hallowe'en party. Several class parties were also held, but our enthusiasm waned from last year's eight. Twenty-six classmates again returned to be Jun- iors, now feeling a little more sophisticated and grown up. WThe Golf Champn, our class play, presented under the direction of Miss Lois Cruickshank, proved to be a huge success. From the proceeds of our play, plus the strenuous efforts of the class members in selling can- dy at various school activities, we entertained the Seniors and Faculty at the annual Junior-Senior Ban- quet. Arvid Clemensen acted as our president and Miss Rose as our supervisor. Those Sophomores who failed to return as 'Juniors were: Martha Dreyer, Mary Dresch, Grant Parker, John Parker, Rachel O'Hara, Fred Schult, Ursula Even, Mar- garet Hinrichs, Marcella Meyer, Hulda Peterson, and Louise Hentges. f's- .435 1 4 1 3 S A 1 1 i 1 3 2 . . 4 1

However, one of our former class- - mates, namely,Louise Hentges, returned to grad- uate with us. Hobart Lias was elected as our president and Mr. Green was our superviser. As has been the custom in the past years we again undertook the task of editing the annual year-book, NThe Pioneeru, which we presented to the public along with a program on Senior Class Night, May ll. On May 4, our Senior Play, WThe Heart Exchangen, was given. On April 29, we were guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet given in the school auditorium. Baccalaureate services were held May 7, with Rev. Kumpf delivering the address. We took the customary Senior Sneak Day on April 26, which was held at Garretson and Dell Rapids. Commencement Exercises held on May 15 proved to be the finale of our High School Days. The speaker of the evening was Hr. Fort, Principal of Washington High. Out of the twenty-two students who graduated this year, we are proud that nine of these have been class- mates throughout their twelve years of school life. They are Dorothe Dubbe, Ray Peters, Arvid Clemensen, Lavon Fehlhaber, Gertrude Kortman, Elpha Schicvelbein, Hobart Lias, Sylvia Theel, and Eunice Wuertz. From our insignificant Freshman days to our now chgnified Senior days our class has had perfect sports- manship and harmony in anything we have undertaken and we have put our best efforts into all of our accom- phshments. As we graduate we have a deep joy of havingx accomplished many things, but mingled with it is the' still deeper sorrow, that of leaving and bidding a last farewell to our school days and classmates at'dear old Humboldt Hi.
