The Student Council for the past year was composed of twenty- two members, under the leadership of Arlis Ernst, President, Gary Strachan, Vice-President, and Mardee Hoffman, Secretary-Treasurer. Chairmen of the four permanent committees were: Pep, Colleen Bogeg Publicity, Gaylen Deckerg Buildings and Grounds, Gary Strachan, Public Welfare, Linda J' ohnsen. These committees carried on many worthwhile activities through- out the year. During the Christmas season they helped with the decora- tions in the halls and bought gifts for the Home of the Good Shepherd in Sioux City. They sponsored Courtesy Week and a Bundle Drive for clothing for needy families in the South. The Junior Red Cross and polio drives were again sponsored, and an award was presented to the 4th period chemistry class for the highest per cent of contribution per member. The Student Council also sold swimming pool tickets, set up a counselling committee to help new students and problem pupils, and appointed a teen code committee. The teen code committee met with a committee of adults who, in turn, prepared a code to be presented next year. Special attention was given this year to remedying the noisy hall situation before school. As in other years, Student Council members served as chairmen of Homecoming committees, with members of the student body helping them. Student Council also again sponsored the election of the 1959- 1960 Student Councilpresident, the Russell and MarvelFriesth awards, and financed the commercial and news awards. The council joined the State Student Council Association and sent Sonnie Linton, Mardee Hoffman, and Linda Johnsen as dele- gates to the State Student Council Convention at Ames, October 20. Delegates to the North Central Conference Convention at Britt, held in May, were Rosemary Gibson, Sonnie Linton, Bill Edwards, and Gary Kuehnast. Joyce Blanchard and Ron Sande attended the Gov- ernor's Conference on Children and Youth at Iowa State Teachers College. Council discusses Teen Code Chemistry class rep receives Fund Award.
