Because of the increasing population, more children all over the country have entered schools. To keep pace with this increase, the schools have had to expand. Humboldt schools are no exception. Taft School added a new wing this year, and part of high school moved into Stone Building. This year the entire commercial department was on the tirst floor of Stone, and Mr. Kuhlman and Mr. Hakeman had classes on the second floor. Chairmen of the four permanent committees were: Pep, Colleen Bogeg Publicity, Gaylen Deckerg Buildings and Grounds, Gary Strachan, Public Welfare, Linda J' ohnsen. These committees carried on many worthwhile activities through- out the year. During the Christmas season they helped with the decora- tions in the halls and bought gifts for the Home of the Good Shepherd in Sioux City. They sponsored Courtesy Week and a Bundle Drive for clothing for needy families in the South. The Junior Red Cross and polio drives were again sponsored, and an award was presented to the 4th period chemistry class for the highest per cent of contribution per member. The Student Council also sold swimming pool tickets, set up a counselling committee to help new students and problem pupils, and appointed a teen code committee. The teen code committee met with a committee of adults who, in turn, prepared a code to be presented next year. Special attention was given this year to remedying the noisy hall situation before school. As in other years, Student Council members served as chairmen of Homecoming committees, with members of the student body helping them. Student Council also again sponsored the election of the 1959- 1960 Student Councilpresident, the Russell and MarvelFriesth awards, and financed the commercial and news awards. The council joined the State Student Council Association and sent Sonnie Linton, Mardee Hoffman, and Linda Johnsen as dele- gates to the State Student Council Convention at Ames, October 20. Delegates to the North Central Conference Convention at Britt, held in May, were Rosemary Gibson, Sonnie Linton, Bill Edwards, and Gary Kuehnast. Joyce Blanchard and Ron Sande attended the Gov- ernor's Conference on Children and Youth at Iowa State Teachers College. Council discusses Teen Code Chemistry class rep receives Fund Award. This commencement was different in many ways from the previous ones. Instead of having the ceremony on the usual Thursday night, it was changed to Monday, and the Valedictory and Salutatory speeches were replaced by a panel made up of the four top students in the class and moderated by the senior class president. Special music was provided by the high school band, which played Colorama Ron Sande and the mixed chorus, who sang I May Never Pass This Way Again. The invocation and benediction were given by the Rev. Fred M. Shultz. The class motto, Look Around This Habitable World: How Few Know Their Own Good, Or Knowing it, Pursue, was illustrated by the four students on the paneL They were Nanette Erickson, Learningg Sharon Braby, Frosting On the Cake, Linda Enockson, Life, and Ron Sande, Pursuit of Happiness. This organization, which encourages good scholarship among its students is known throughout the nation as one of the most respected for high school students. After the Constitution was written by the committee and approved by the national department, the eligible students were voted upon by the faculty. To be eligible for membership, one must be a junior or a senior and have maintained a 3.00 grade average or better during his high school years. He is then voted upon on the basis of his character, leader- ship, and service, his scholarship having already been proven. At the first National Honor Society assembly, Jim Seehusen, member from Monticello, Iowa, pre- sented the charter to Mr. Cram. Mr. Carney, Miss DeGues, Mrs. Wilhelm, and Mrs. Wogen, who with Mr. Cram will make up the faculty council, gave short speeches. Following an introduction of the Honor So- ciety members from Humboldt, the new student members were initiated. The proud charter members of Humboldt N. H. S. For the annual Christmas assembly the mixed chorus presented a beautiful program consisting of narrators from the chorus, the singing of Christmas hymns, and the playing of gay Christmas songs by the brass choir. Girls from the glee club helped in the dramatization of the Christmas story. During the Christmas vacation the band sponsored another successful semiformal dance. The theme, Silver Bells, was accented by the large, glimmering silver bell which served as the centerpiece for the dance. Background music was provided by Pete's Combo. The dance proved to be the highlight of the Christmas season for many students. The marching band performed at four home- football games, Band Day at Iowa State, and the homecoming Parade under the leadership of the maj- orette Marcia Nelson. Two pep bands sparked the boys' basketball teams to victory this year. In November two band members, Alvin Newton and Judy Caskey, were selected to play in All-State Band and All-State Orchestra ir1 Des Moines. During the Christmas holidays, the band spon- sored a semi-forrnal dance for all high school students and alumni. This year's theme was Silver Bells. The dance band, with theChoraliers, from Mixed Chorus, presented the annual Pops Concert in the spring. The Concert Band was kept busy preparing for four public performances, small-group contest which was held at Humboldt, and large-group contest which was in Mason City. The band received seventeen I ratings, eight II ratings, and two III ratings at small- group contest. The whole band received a I rating at large group contest. The chorus and band presented a joint outdoor concert near the end of summer. The mixed chorus first public appearance after school had started was at the annual County Teachers' Meeting. The next big event of the year was All-State Chorus. This proved to be valuable experience for many chorus members, although all of the quartets trying out didn't make it to Des Moines for the three big days. The next item on the agenda was the annual Christmas assem- bly, this year put on by the mixed chorus and brass choir. The chorus sang and narrated the Christmas story as members of the glee clubs and student body pantomimed the scenes. The Pops Concert was presented by the Choraliers and Dance Band and was composed of popular ballads and folk songs presented in a contemporary vein. Ron Danielson and ,Tim Nelson gave their barroom rendition of I Hail from Texas, and Phyllis Dittrich made her presence known in the song Louisiana Hayride when she yelled out, I is here! The theme of the play concerned an elderly couple, who, after meeting in the park, discovered that they had been in love many years ago. The play was given at the Preliminary Contest at Clarion. THE LOSING OF A DAY The Losing of a Day was directed by Mr. Russell, with the help of student director Monte Hansen. The play was given at the Hampton Festival. When the play was also presented at the S. U. I. Festival, David Daffron replaced David Nelson. The play told the story of a Koreanwar veteran who returned to his home as a hero. Later it was discovered that he did not de- serve this title, and when his life was threatened and his reputa- tion ruined, he began to realize his need for his wife's love. Be- cause of this, he reached a maturity level he had never before attained. Sandra Parsons and Ron Danielson both received Outstanding Actor Awards for their performances in the play. Act Your Age The senior class play, ACT YOUR AGE, under the direction of Mr. Russlell, was presented Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12. It was a comedy in three acts illustrating humourously, the importance of acting one's own age. Rosemary DeGroote, the maid, and Marcia Nelson, as her neighbor,-stole the show with their hilarious exhibition of lady wrestling. The play began with two fifteen-year-old girls, named Angelica CAngyJ and Geraldine fJerryJ, became engaged, by correspondence to two sailors. The sailors showed up by surprise, and the excitement began. But a damper was put on the romance when the girls' aunt Sandra came to visit, and to fool the girls, she posed as her niece. Couples danced to the music of Les' records and player. A few seniors, however, braved the cold and played a game of workup on the wet, slippery grass. Monte Hansen slightly overthrew home base when he threw the ball into the river. But the hero of the day, John Merris, courageously waded into the river to get it and came out drip- ping wet. Marie Conlon was chosen lucky girl to be dumped into the river. This is requirement of any Ser1i0rSkiD Day. This back page devoted to the news and views ofthe high school is called the Hum- boldt Register and is under the supervision and guidance of Mr. Short. This year the paper had a full-time staff which consisted of two co-editors, Kaye Eversoll and ,T ill Hart, and nineteen staff members. The copy readers were Janet Tallman and Mary Morris. The regular Register included various polls, features, and often advance publicity on school events. Among the featured columns were Grad's Gab, Time Out, and Student Static, regularly written by Ronnie Lue Hansen. For the Christmas holidays a special Christmas issue was pub- lished by the students themselves, independent of the downtown news- paper. It was a large issue including special polls, features, poems, short stories, art work, a special Christmas editorial, and even letters to Santa Claus written by the high school students. At the award assembly Janet Tallman was presented an award, voted by the staff, for being the star reporter of the year. All of the features and articles in the newspaper have drawn considerable interest from the students and faculty and even from the townspeople. It is generally felt that this year's Register has been a big success. Editors and adviser work hard to get th Christmas issue ready for publication. t'lZ',. Even though the editor was elected in the spring of the previous year, she knew less than nothing about her job. Confusion rang truim- phant until the middle of the year, when the editor took a vacation from school for about one and a half months. Needless to say, nothing was accomplished during her absence, since no one was intelligent enough or big enough to fill her shoes. However, the photographers did take some nice blurry pictures. The sales campaign went beautifully, with the help of the poetry submitted to the daily bulletin. A good example of the intellectual ability and talent of the business staff is this entry: Spring has' sprung, fall has fell. Buy your Nokomis or go to another school. The rhyme may not be so good, but, after all, it's the thought that counts. The final check revealed many surprises: Sande in G.R.A., Han- rahan sophomore class president: Linda Johnsen, winning the Science Award, and Marcia Ne1son,Valedictorian. 'I'he Nokomis room is now empty, for the 1959 yearbook has been completed at last. The editor is very grateful to all those who have done so much to help with the book. First on the list, and onewho deservesa lot of thanks, is Linda Johnsen, who served as assistant editor and was stuck with a lot of hard work and did it. A big thanks goes to Sau1's Studio, for without them, I don't know what we would have done. We also thank the Humboldt Newspaper office for the pictures they let us use fHonor Society and Track teaml. Mr. Eversoll and Mr. Cram, our advisers, were people we could fall back on. We thank them for their help, and we were glad they knew what they were doing -- we surely didn't. And last, but not least by any means, a big thank you goes to all the seniors who worked on this book. To you who got your write-ups in on time, to you who were willing to do more than what was expected of you, and to you who sold the books, we thank you sincerely. In conclusion, only one more thing will be said. This book you are holding is for you, student of Humboldt High. It is about you and your friends and your life in this school for nine months. We have tried to put together, in picture form and in writing, some of the most important things that happened this year. There have been some changes, and the activities are divided differently this year, but this year's Nokomis is basically the same. You have seen the product of our work and worryg only you are the judge of our suc- cess. If you are pleased by this book, and if it will remind you, in the years to come, of some happy times in the year 1958-59, then it will have accomplished its purpose.
