Student Council The Student Council for this year was composed of the fourth period news reps and the class presidents. The council was divided into four committees: Building and Grounds, Bruce Coltvet, chairman, Pep, Arlis Ernst, Chairman, Public Welfare, George George, Chairman, and Publicity, Dennis Reed, chairman. The council joined the State Association of Student Councils and sent a delegation consisting of Arlis Ernst, Alice Johnson, George George, and John Burchfield to the State Student Council Convention at Ames in October. The council kept busy with many different projects during the year. Among them were soc-hops, sponsoring the Red Cross drive, Courtesy Week, Lost and Found Sale, selling senior name cards, decorating the school for Christ- mas, sending boxes of clothing to a home at Sioux City, and keeping a calendar of events posted at the central bul- letin board. The chore of keeping the trophy cases clean and checking and repairing lockers kept the building and grounds committee busy. The two main projects of the council this year were homecoming and the fire signs that were placed ineach room directing exit. The council sold swimming pool season tickets and sponsored the election of the 1958-59 Student Council presi- dent, the Russell award, Marvel F riesth Award, Commercial awards and News awards. Mardee Hoffman, Arlis Ernst, J im Peterson and George George were selected to attend the district meeting at Web- ster City in the spring. Lane, Coltvet, and Clabaugh check dirty lockers each week. Cold ice cream, brisk breeze, but oh, how nice the sun is! kip Day On a bright Monday, May 19, the seniors traveled to Twin Lakes for the annual Skip Day. The seniors were accompanied by Mr. Cram and Mr. HalL After everyone arrived the boys began a lively game of football while the girls played softball. The boys soon joined them in another game of softball. The game was won by the girls. The lake attracted several swimmers and two chaperones, who went on an un- successful fishing trip. At noon everyone enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch. After five girls were thrown in the lake, we departed. Our Skip Day was very success- ful and enjoyed by all. Much thanks to chairmen: Rosie Amlie, PlacegHarryHayes, Transportation, Carol Thompson, Foodg and Dick Brownfield, Entertainment. Another hit for the girls. Vocal Music The Humboldt High School vocal music department has been very active this year. There were soloists, small groups, and large groups to prepare for performances and also contests to be worked toward. Our chorus was chosen during the summer and at the first of the school year made its first appearance at the annual County Teachers Meeting. The following people were selected to sing in All-State Chorus in Des Moines in Novem- ber: Becky Hope, Susan Hope, Jim Nelson,Jim Strachan, Nancy Arent, LaVonne Wind, Jo Cran, Tilford Vik, Judy Hansen, Julie Sime, Harvey Lane, and Bruce Coltvet. The next events on the schedule were the operetta Stars and Stripes Forever, andthe annual Conference Festival at Webster City where an evening concert was presented. A small group called the Choraliers was organized this year and performed at the Pops Concert with the dance band. The chorus members, under the direction of salesmanager Bruce Coltvet, sold more bars of the World's Finest Chocolate than the band and were treated to a picnic in June. The Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs perform- ed in a combined group at the Christmas As- sembly and individually at the Spring Concert. The small group contest was held at Storm Lake where the Humboldt vocal contestants re- ceived six l's, eleven ll's, and four III's. The large groups contest was held at Spirit Lake. Although the rain upset the original parade plans, the student body, led by the band and cheer- leaders, marched through main street after the assembly. That evening at the halftime of the game, the rain stopped long enough for the queen and her attendants to be presented to the Homecoming fans.
