Previously, seniors had attended Career Day, but it was decided that the juniors should attend so they would be better able to choose their electives as seniors. The big event in the life of a junioris planning and presenting the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom which were May 7 this year. The planning committee consisted of ten industrious and secretive students: Banquet Decoration - Shirley Peterson, Dance Committee-Rae Barsness, Invi- tations-Kay Rokenbrodt, Program-Velma Jensen, Sketch- ing and Drawing Knstine Andersen Gym Decoration Marvin Andersen and the class officers The class officers who were elected IH the fall, Emory Andersen, Presidentg Sherryl Stevenson, Vice- President: Jan Hill, Secretary, Tom Eichler, Treasurer, and the rest of the junior class, which is 93 strong, faith- fully sold confections between quarters and during the halves at basketball games in order to add to their treas- ury. CLASS or I958 On September 20, an excited sophomore class gather- ed infrontof the high school anticipating the picnic supper of maid -rites, pop, potato chips, and dixie cups that await- ed them at the tourist park. After a stimulating hike and a delicious supper, everyone took part in a rollicking foot- ball game. Later on Judy Lonning was called upon to read the scandal sheet, and the evening came to a delightful close. The five girls that skipped out before the paper was picked up were chosen to be the K.P. committee next year. The magazine saleswere profitable for the sophomore class treasury as wellas for the people who won prizes. The class made its goal of S800 by selling 8869.67 worth of magazines. High salesmen were John Burchfield, Judy Lonning, Virginia Andersen, Judy Davenport, and Marlene Hansen. Other prizes were won by Phyllis Hendrickson and Gerry Giddings. Citations were given to Greta Buckner and Diane I-lelvick, The class, with its 88 members, lost four students and gained four new ones during the year. The new ones are Joyce Craig, Harry Hayes, Sherry Powell, and Larry Beck. The class is led by Janice Bennett, President, Duane Marcellus, Vice-President, Judy Lonning, Secretary, and Virginia Andersen, Treasurer. Skip Dresser, when asked what was done after supper, replied We jest danced. Even though the picnic lacked the usual wood-smoke and fresh air, it was generally agreed that the dance made up for the rain, and almost everyone had an enjoyable time. The 1956 freshmen proved that they were the top salesmen by making their goal of 31500, selling a grand total of S2069.60, outselling the sophomores by a long margin, and setting a new record for magazine sales at Humboldt High High salesman was Gary Strachan who received a portable radio. A new subject was started this year for freshmen. It is a semester class concerning personality development, family living, dating, good grooming, health and body care, and job preparation. This class was taught by Mr. Schultz, The biggest class that has ever entered the halls of Humboldt High, boasting 123 students, was headed by Dick Williams, Presidentg George George, Vice-Presidentg Judy Hansen, Secretaryg and Judy Jacobsen, Treasurer, The sponsors for the class are Mrs. Wogen, Mr, Camey, and Mr. Furst. The vocal music department, under the direction of Mr. Stewart, consisted of approximately 100 voices: 25 in Be1Canto, 25 in Cecilian, and 50 in Mixed Chorus. The Chorus participated in many activities this year. They attended the festival at Algona in Feb- ruary, and on March 13 they shared the spotlight with the dance band and other small groups at the Pops Concert. Before contest they presented another concert and nervously gave a 15-minute television program over KQTV in Fort Dodge, The 1956 State Music Contest was held at Hamp- ton on May 5. Although the day was cloudy and rainy, the Chorus proudly brought home a I rating. At the Spring Concert they dressed up and sang their best for the last concert of the year. At com- mencement they ended the year by singing The Nation's Creed. CONTEST RESULTS Becky Hope QTreble-mediumj . . . . . . .I Kathy Lane fTreble-mediumj . . . . I Louise Stamper CTreble-lowj . . . . The Fortune Teller , the well-known operetta by Victor Herbert, was presented by the mixed chorus No- vember l'7 and 18. The plot, full of subtle jokes and sly humor, took place in Livonia, amythical European kingdom. It con- cerned the efforts of the pompous Count Berezowski Ulm Helvickj and Fresco QMark Christensenj to obtain a lottery ticket the Count inadvertently gave Irma fKat.hy Laney when under the influence of her charms. Since, in Livonia, all a woman's property belonged to her husband, the Count tried to trick Irma into marrying him in order to recover the precious ticket. Irma and her fiance, Captain Ladislaus fEd Strachanj, had other ideas, however. They plot with a band of gypsies to have the fortune teller, Musette fBecky Hopel, impersonate Irma at the wedding ceremony. They are unsuccessful, though, and the Countdiscovers the scheme. Some help from two ballet dancers fBarbara Nelson and Sheryl Seversonj, their lovers fGary Greene and Gary Sharpj, and Sandor Uack Newtonj, Musette's lazy lover, 59 Q K saves the two young lovers, however, and all ends hap pily. Boris fTed Bastianj, Musette's greedy father Vaninka fLavonne Poppingaj, her fickle mother, Mme Pompon fMeredith Morsej, the prima donna of the ballet and three dull-witted agents of the Secret Police lKent Tigges, Charles Schultz, and Don Steffaj added to the confusion and merriment. This year's officers were Robert Friedrich, Presi- dentgDar1ow Rapple, Vice-Presidentg and Alyce John- son, Secretary-Treasurer. PROM The Showboat, being the theme of this year's Banquet and Prom, carried the juniors and seniors through a very eventful evening of entertainment. The fun began at the banquet in the Methodist Church basement at which a bountiful dinner was served by sophomores. The toastmaster was COL Sweetgrass, Marvin Andersen, who made a few witty opening re- marks and then proceeded to introduce the evening's entertainment. Miss Swanee, Mary Erickson, reviewed the previous three years in the lives of the seniors and came up with some startling incidents. Ed Strachan, speaking from his ' 'Old Kentucky Home, enlightened his audience with a thorough report of the past experiences of the junior class and a few thumb- nail sketches of some of its members. The trumpet trio entertained the passengers of the showboat with Bolero. O1dManRiver, Mr.Potts,in illustrating the snags and rapids that will be encountered on the journey down the river of life, told about several of the snags that he had the misfortune to catch his anchor on. Following the banquet, the southern belles and their escorts sailed to the gym where they were con- fronted by a Negro minstrel playing a banjo, This centerpiece, the mural, and other decorations proved to the seniors that the hard-working juniors had done much justice to their theme, Everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of Eddie A11en's band.
