Two highlights of the year were the Christmas Concert held December 20 and the Variety Show scheduled for April 16. Preferred selections included Lean on the Wind, and UAH the Way to the River. Other favorites included 4'Lonely Memories, I Need You Friend,', and We Can't Say Good-Bye, all written by Denise Rios, a junior choir member. A girls' octet was formed which had Raymi Casillas, Molly Conlan, Eileen Deutsch, Carrie Garcia, Gloria Gregor, Beverly Nash, Michelle Peterson, and Rios as its members. Paul Langlois joined Eric Kaup, Brian Kittelson, and Mike Romo as a boys' quartet. There were many opportunities to show off the choiris talents away from school, including concert appearances at area elementary schools. In December, the choir sang holiday carols in the First National Bank Skyway. While the graduation performance always takes on a special meaning for the choir, this year's had even more significance: exactly one- half of the choir members were scheduled to participate in the graduation ceremonies and receive their diplomas. There they played in the Region 3AA large group contest, competing against other schools. Immediately following, on March 21, was the Pyramid concert during which Humboldt hosted West Side and Monroe elementary schools. In April the band played at the Variety Show. The group also went to Cherokee, Monroe, and Riverview schools to perform and to recruit possible band members. In May, members marched in the Police Parade. To end its year, the group played together one final time at graduation ceremonies on June 6. Team members participated in several local tournaments and gained debating experience and improved communication skills but were not quite ready to take home any trophies. We're just learning what we can and having a , good time, concluded Coach Mike Tweeton. THE MATH LEAGUE provided another form of academic competition for Humboldt students, with five meets scheduled during the ,V year and a total of seven other Twin Cities area schools providing the opposition. OJT provides the opportunity for selected seniors to enter the world of work under the supervision of both a trained professional employer and a professional educator and still attend a half-day of classes at Humboldt. Cherokee State Bank, St. Paul Companies, Corps of Engineers, Department of Natural Resources, and Sears were included among the 32 companies which served the 46 senior participants in the program this year. Some of these job stations have been available to students since the program started in the 19505. OJT was supervised at Humboldt by Mr. Joel Arnevik and Mr. Jim Wirth. With membership at about thirty, January and February trips were scheduled to Afton Alps. Beginners were welcomed at the first and , V third outings where it was possible to receive free one-hour lessons from Ms. Dianne Hopen, adviser and expert ski instructor. The administrative team was increased by one, as Dr. Oliver Spencer returned from a leave of absence to move into handling discipline problems in grades seven and eight. Mr. Ralph McDonough, long-term Humboldt English teacher and coach, was appointed writing specialist. In this role, he created additional opportunities for students to strengthen their writing skills. Mr. McDonough also helped coordinate teacher workshops which focused on how to improve student writing. AS THE SCHOOL YEAR approached the end of the first semester, the Board of Education had given approval to several measures designed to improve the learning climate. These included more staff members to deal with discipline, and Saturday morning detention time for the most disruptive students. There was even talk of using a computer at Humboldt which could be programmed to call the homes of those with attendance and tardiness problems. The first decision meant there was no group designated to cheer for girls' basketball, and the second decision made it possible for ninth graders to be part of the varsity cheering squad. There were five returning varsity members from last year - Julie Anderson, Colleen Dickey, Julie Ekholm, Chris Fisher, and Leandra Zepeda - and they were joined by ten new members after original tryouts were held last spring and repeated in October to fill out the Winter sports teams. Teri Helsper and Lynn Reinke were the two ninth graders who made it all the way to the varsity this year. Weekly practices were held to keep voices in shape, to rehearse old routines, and to add new cheers and movements to their collection. Cheerleaders faced the difficult task of conducting several all-school pep fests. Their work was made easiest by the winning ways of the wrestling team. The year was made complete by participation in the old stand-by activity: fund-raising. Candy and popcorn were sold to raise money for an end-of-the-year banquet. There were no reports of any cheerleader-sponsored car washes being held. Marie-Dionne Villamore, Roberta VanHorn, Teri Helsper, Lynn Reinke. TOP: On the sidelines. Cheerleaders 87 In long season Humboldt hammers Highland THE FIRST-YEAR COACH was quick to praise his players for their effort and positive attitude and was able to point to a 6-2 win over Highland as an example of what can happen when a team works together as a unit. Mr. Paul Herzog knew last spring when he was assigned as varsity football coach that his job would not be easy, but he was able to find success in small measures as his squad battled through a tough City Conference schedule with only the win over Highland to show against seven losses. Senior Mike Pizzuti, the team's most valuable player, scored a ten- yard touchdown run against the Scots, while the defense sealed the win by shutting down Highland's offense. THE STORY was different in the other seven games, however, as Humboldt was outscored, 264-20, giving up an average of nearly 38 points per game. The Indians were shut out four times, with only Andy Gomez on a quarterback sneak against Como and Pizzuti on a run against St. Thomas scoring Humboldt touchdowns. Pizzuti was rewarded for his special efforts by being named to the All City team, while lineman Brian Gomez received honorable mention. Lineman John Markham was named the squad's most improved player. ABOVE. Humboldt's front line plays tough as Robert Garcia rushes with the ball. ABOVE MIDDLE. This was a scrappy squad which could hold its own against the bigger schools, such as Ramsey, Hill Murray, and South St. Paul. The season ended with a loss to Johnson, city champion and eventual State Tournament entry. AGAINST RAMSEY, Humboldt battled back from a 15-13 first-game loss to sweep two straight by scores of 15-6 and 15-11. Kelly Oglesby and Debbie Fredrickson, only a sophomore, brought further honors to Humboldt by being named to the All-City team. Other awards were earned by Fredrickson, most dedicated, Karen Schmidt, most improvedg and Oglesby, most valuable. Jolene Jenniges and Oglesby were team captains. When asked about the team's greatest strength, Coach Denise Quinlan stated, Each player improved in her own special way. 77 ABOVE. Volleyball Ninth grade wins 10 Revenge gained by JV WITH A FINAL RECORD of 4-9, the junior varsity volleyball team avenged an early-season loss to Harding with a 2-0 shutout in the final match of the season. Usual starters included Missy Castillo, Rosa Gaona, Loan Le, Becky Reinhardt, Candy Rosario, and Patti Verdeja. At the JV tournament held at Humboldt, the Indians suffered 2-1 losses to Johnson and Como. THE BEST PERFORMANCE of any Humboldt fall sports team, based on its win-loss record, was earned by the ninth grade volleyball squad, which raced to a 7-3 mark in conference action and was 3-0 in non-conference play. Two losses, to Harding and Highland, were made up for with wins in the second round of play. The victory over Highland was made even more important because the Scots had previously been undefeated and eventually won the city title. What made this even more amazing was that Heather did this as a ninth grader. The transfer student from Richfield mowed down all region competition, including 6-2, 6-3 decisions over the number-one seeded player from Ramsey. At the State Tourney, held in October at the Nicollet Tennis Center, Nelson was dealt first-round losses by a player from Detroit Lakes. As a team, Humboldt ended its season with a 1-6 record. The victory was recorded over Highland in the first meet of the season, 4-3, for the first win for a Humboldt tennis team in three years. The girls' squad opened its season with a win over Como, the first for Humboldt in three years. Six school records were broken, with five marks being set by Carrie Garcia and one by Patti Patton. Boys' Swimming In non-league play Humboldt earns 2 victories NON-CONFERENCE victories over St. Paul Academy and Brady highlighted the boys' basketball season, but the Indians went winless in sixteen conference games and were forced to settle for a last place standing. Coach Larry Lucio continued his up-beat approach to the program for basketball players at Humboldt and could point to two outstanding ninth graders - Scott Aeilts and Leo Flores - that there was hope for the future. Aeilts ended up being one of the team's leading scorers, while Flores scored well and was a leader in rebounding. Four seniors - Dino Alsides, Jon Garcia, Dan Hannan, and Andre Zampa - provided the bulk of the leadership for the team and took turns being scoring threats for the Indians. Typical, perhaps, of games played during the season was a 75-43 loss to St. Thomas Academy on January 29. The Indians managed only six points in the first period and were behind, 43-19, by the end of the first half. The final score was 75-43. Humboldt featured a balanced scoring attack, with Alsides and Aeilts hitting ten each and Roy Hernandez chipping in with nine. Top scorer for the season was Yvette Schultz, while leading rebounders were Milissa Castillo and Becky Solt. All JV players also saw some game time with the varsity Humboldt did not have a ninth grade girls' team. The boys suffered two close defeats - to St. Thomas, 41-40, and to Harding, 43-39. Mark Reinke was the leading scorer for the season, averaging in double figures. Tim Olson was the best rebounder. The ninth grade team was 4-12, with a pair of victories coming over both Harding and Johnson. Beto Perez was the leading scorer, while David Leach was top rebounder. Humboldt was 8-0 in the conference, with a 29-23 dual match victory over Como ranking as a highlight. Brian Gomezys pin in the night's final match nailed the win and put the Indians in first place to stay. The squad rolled to its third Twin City trophy, 34-16, over Edison. Humboldt won its first five matches to put the contest out of reach. Gomez beat a 330-pound opponent to aid the cause. By finishing first in the individual portion of the Region 3AA Tournament, Humboldt qualified for the team portion of the action and a possible berth in the State. That plan was derailed by Park, 38-19, in what was considered to be an upset. Scott Clark, 185, and Tim Newbauer, 105, led the state qualifiers as champions of the region. Donny Johnson and Brian McDonough, with help from Jon Garcia, shared the mound chores, while Scott Englund, Karl Lasch, and McDonough provided most of the batting power. Youthfulness and small numbers held the team portion of competition back, but this did not stop several individuals from posting excellent showings. The names of Leo Flores, Greg Herrera, Ray Hughes, Dean Schladweiler, Wayne Schladweiler, and Bill Taylor came up most often as individual competitors with the best performances. Hughes was probably the top point-getter while working the shorter running events and the long jump. Junior high students were encouraged to join the team in hopes of building future interest.
