It is in the tradition of Amer- ' ican education that the schools keep pace with the technical, vocational, academic, social and citizenship demands of our dynamic society. At Humboldt the administration and the faculty are dedicated to helping students under- stand the changing requirements of adult life. In the school year that is now behind we have tried to live up to our responsibilities. And it is our belief that the year has been a profit- able one, not only for the students, but for the West Side and for the nation. Surely the future will not measure the success of our stu- dents by the records of their athletic triumphs nor even by their academic excellence. Rather will they be judged by their commitment to making ours a better nation. At Humboldt we hope that each student has had the background which will make him cognizant of the trust his country places in him. 'Q To the graduates of l972 our best wishes. The teams 4 and 4 record did not, indeed, tell the story of the success of the Humboldt gridders. There is usually more to any sports story than the final scores. So it was this year with our team. With the single exception-the Central game, played under adverse conditions,- the close scores of the games that we lost might easily have been reversed. Captain David Hansen and Steve Sandbeck were honored by City Conference coaches when they were named to the all-city team. Arnulfo Flores was named to the all-state team by WCCO's Prep Parade after scoring four touchdowns in the game against Mechanic Arts. The torch signifying team leadership was passed from David Hansen to next year's tri-captains Joe Lucio, Dan Tourville, and Doug Ruiz. 4 and 4 in City Race Don tries the center of the line 7915: my 'mu Q. 0, Just one more tackle Coach Ryan and Captain Dave discuss strategy. 61 X I - .ser . vw ky , My-, CRUSS COU TRY ROW 1: Jeff Lynch, Fred Frias, Kevin Bresnahan, Steve Josephs. Looking ahead, Coach McGregor predicts improvement in his squad based upon strict training regimens. The boys will practice on their own during the summer months. Good things for the future were promised by the several games in which a few breaks might have tipped the final score in the favor ofthe Indians. Ron George, playing at center, lead the team in scoring. Hitting in the twenty's against Monroe, Harding, Johnson and St. Bernard's, Ron was at times plagued by the opposition's tendency to dou- ble team him. The junior varsity program, newly institituted this season, played Saturday afternoons and made it possible for junior players to participate in 8 ex- tra games. Humboldt's J.V.s had a record of 4 and 4 in Saturday play. The new program will certainly be of benefit to the total basketball program. They provided outstanding leadership throughout the year and finished the season with ex- cellant records. Rich was selected as the most valuable wrestler by his teammates. 24 wins and 2 losses. He scored 130 points and had l9 pins. He was also district champion. Felix, I-'red Molina, and Reynaldo Varela have been elected tri-captains for next year. Mike Munoz, a 9th grader, won the district championship at 98 pounds. Doug Schliechert, also a 9th grader, came through with some very important wins to take 3rd in district. Dave Schlie- chert, a sophomore, showed tremendous improvement this year and went on to take Znd place in the district. Humboldt has many promisingi8th, 9th, and l0th grade wres- tlers who showed that they could come through when the chips were down. We are all looking forward to another excellent year next year. It is demanding because it takes work to build up coordination and muscles. More important, gymnastics builds self-confidence. Not everyday does one see handstands, twists, flips, etc. This year's Indian Gym team posted a 5-3 conference record and placed 4th in the city race. The team lacked experience, but in- spite of this handicap they brought many exciting moments to the spectators. Head coach George Wallace stated that, next year will be a re- building season for the gymnastics team. Five seniors will be lost through graduation-'two of them our leading scorers, Roger Christiansen and Arnulfo Flores. Coach Wallace hopes that there will be a big turn out. The team had wins over Central, Murray, Mechanic Arts, Mon- roe and Washington. They lost to Harding, Highland and John- son. No sport is ever minor to those who play it. Golf is an on-coming activity at Humboldtg and young men like Tim Jack and Pete Niedzielski, only freshmen on last year's golf team, make the prospects for better re- cords very likely at Humboldt. Last season Mr. Ernst's linksmen finished the season with a three and four record. Larry Munoz and Fred Frias. Another sport that is catching on at Humboldt is tennis. Though not widely participated in a few years ago, each new season shows a growing number t of West-siders improving their skills with ball and l racket. i Mr. Robert Abrahamson became the coach of the tennis team last year and he is very enthusiastic about the prospect of winning seasons to come. He feels that the tennis team will become better each year and as improvement sets in so will the interest in the sport increase. Managers for the l97l tennis team were Bonnie Kelzer and Nancy Reeves. They performed such duties as making announcements of upcoming games and scheduling matches. The girls plan to continue as managers this year. Team captains for the 1971 team were Fred Frias and Dan Seivert. 75 B-SQUAD FOOTBALL L ,L . L ,wt . Pleased with the team's overall performance, Coach Ekbom looks forward with some apprehension to next year, noting that only five or six experienced ball players will be returning. The boys will need to put in a hard sum- mers work to return next No- vember as varsity ball players. 79 hockey The B hockey team posted a record of 3 wins and 5 losses in city conference play. Captain Chuck Mike was the team's lead- ing goal getter and was voted the most valuable player by his team mates. Assisting Chuck in his duties as captain were Bill Sche- rado and Jeff Brevig. Our Homecoming game was played against Mechanic Arts. We defeated them 44 to IZ. One of the highlights of homecoming week was the girl's powder puff football games. The sophomore girls were the undefeated team and won the championship. There was one mishap during the week, Mary Frame, the seniors star player broke her ankle, but she courageously played on till the end. Our great home- coming week came to an end with the dance.
