Claudio Yzaguirra Born in the town of Forua, Guernica, Vizcaya Province, Spain on October 30, 1922, Claudio Yzaguirra came to Amer- ica in 1948t He worked as a sheepherder in Idaho and Washing- ton for about 4 years. Claudio went back to Spain in 1955 There he met and mar- ried his pretty wife, Jesusa Mallea. Then he returned to Amer- ica, became a US. citizen, and sent for Jesusa in 1957. The Yzaguirras moved to Winnemueca and became partners with Mike and Margaret Olano in the Winnemucca Hotel. In 1972, they sold their share to the Olanos. The School District hired Claudio in 1974, and he spent most of the last 15 years looking after us here at Lowry. The Yzaguirras have two sons, John and Louie, and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Angie Claudio and Jesusa are moving to Bend, Oregon, to spend their retirement enjoying the beautiful scenery and fishing streams. We wish them a happy retirement and plenty of fish. Student body officers Lisa Oxborrow 8c Barney Hill present Claudio with a parting gift. 11 we have isa lS moment Th 4 Opening 'Ywnaw 'HN :, s s; wt This moment is all we have, Take it as it happens. Al- though they began virtually penniless, these bright students managed to raise the funds they needed to put on the JunioreSenior Prom. This class had great promise, but probably would not have succeeded without Ms. Gabica and Ms. Salla. Under their direction, the Juniors came out on top, being well-prepared for this memorable event. The stockings were burnt, singed simply bare, for the world had been struck by nuclear warfare. The people of the world, women. children, and men, had just committed the ultimate sin. The ground was littered with mutated dead, some even died while lying in bed. The two superpowers that fought with each other, considered the other neither friend nor brotherl They fought a war so bitter and sad, Why? Simply because one made the other look bad. They never helped each other in time of need, all they were taught of was their own selfish greed. It all started when the president put on his cap, and sat at his desk, ready to nap. When up in the sky there arose such a boom, he rose from his desk as the sound shook the room. He ran to the window, and what should he heed? A nuclear warhead flying top speed. He called out the navy, air force, marines, they all went to war with their deadly machines. Slowly, but surely, the world was destroyed, all that was left was a dry, barren void. This could really happen if the fighting never ends, Instead of being enemies, we should become friends. -Ernest McCormick lightning strikes through the cold wet air with its crashing sharpness, and razofs edge nobody cares itis just a natural fact until it draws closer closer to home it sliced the darkness and shattered the tree Then people care, they fear for their lives donit take her for granted lightning is naturels reminder to not take her lightly for if you do itill strike, m to mg Graphic by Jenn Felts Art 89 90 Art ttGil 8L Tigerh by Dama Matteson INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW ME Itts hard to be knocked off my horse then be expected to get back on Fm going to do my best to mount myself back into the saddle of life Pm tired of being down on myself if no one else will I should respect myself show the world therets more to me than meets the eye someday the whole world is going to stand up and take notice of me the real me not the superficial hate everyone and everything but the one who likes to laugh smile and make other people happy from this day on I work for myself not society -Rachel Beth Dorman AMA as something I was privileged to see. I reveled in the roar, the crash of waves, the screaming gulls, above all, endless blue. The rest of society was a distant memory; only the ripplets were real, playing. dancing round my feet. I loved to visit, but not to stay. I wanted to, with all my heart; but the magic would fade if my dream place became my life. 1 left the ocean for many years and when I returned, it had changed. MIDNIGHT PASSINGS I preferred to dream, to remember. I realized that it was me who had changed; I was older, and it the same. In coming years I suppose that I will change more and more; in a far distant future I will be old, and others follow. Yet the ocean will always be there for me; it will remember. Cares and age will disappear, and I will be a child once more. -Darby Mentaberry Misty moonlight hovers around the walls, Where a midnight shadow begins to crawl. A vision-a thoughtmlinks to form a line, And I writhe in my bed just to listen to time. With the blue twilight haze the walls have oozed to a blur, And inside my head the voices still stir. The reality of the nighttime-filled with subconscious dreams, A reality only broken by the silence of my screams. My mind explores the darkness once more before the time is gone, As the Moon raps softly at NatureIs door to awake the dreaded Dawn, -C0nm'e Fortik DECEPTION A voice, no a whisper Whisper whisper sweet sound Sound sound low, fleeting fleeting not sweet Sweet sweet deception Deception deception full of sorrow Sorrows cries carried on the wind. -Connie Fortik Drawing by John Silor Art 91 Drawing by Jay Echeto Gold is stiff and impersonal. Why is life so hard for me? Im on a downwards escalator, canlt you see? I start at the top, whirling and twirling all around, But then things happen, and I fall down, down, down, When it seems things are looking toward the sky, I see myself and things around, and kiss it all goodbye, Maybe you think Fm feeling sorry for me, But Im on a downwards escalator, canlt you see? I hold my head high, and laugh at the world, But soon my facade falls, And Im a scared little girl, How can things feel so right, and yet be so wrong? I smile for the crowd, yet cry all night long, You maynlt understand what Im tellng to thee, Im on a downwards escalator, I hope you can see. -Angie Metcalf Photo by Brandi Gleason Drawing by Lori Berg JUST FOR A MOMENT I knew from the start that we woulant last. It wasnit from the heart, we just tried to heal the past I was tied down and wanted to be free You were let down and had no chance to be. I saw you as a chance to find out what I wanted. You took one glance and said, IIshe wonIt leave me haunted.u You still love her which you may not see. I still love him but want to be free. I need a chance, to do what's right for me. Jealousy is good, but it doesnit mean you own me. All I ever wanted was just a friend. But as you can see we have become more than that. Not that, that is bad in fact I thought it was quite good. Lets keep it just like this now LetIs let ourselves grow, you need time and so do I. You lost your love and I let mine go You need me and I need you But we need time to figure out just what we want to do!!!!!! I LOVE YOU NH!!! -Dory Powers Art 93 THEIR MOMENTS WERE OUR MEMORIES TO SHARE. THE MEMORIES WERE OURS, THE MOMENTS WERE THEIRS. HERES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE MEMORIES OF 1988- 1989. The Bucks played with pride and enthusiasm. Sometimes a losing season can teach you a few things about life, It can show you that if you want to be sucessful, you must work hard towards your goals. It can show you that a great deal of preparation is needed before every game. To win football games a team must come together and play as one, not 27 indepondant teams, with each having a different goal. Hardwork, dedication and desire are all key factors in having a successful football season. This year a group of young men from Lowry stepped between the white lines of the football field and did battle with the opposing teamst They were not always a winner on the scoreboard but they were still winners for daring to try, and not giving up when the going got tough, They finished the season with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Each of the Lowry players grew :1 little bit and formed a friendship with the other members of the football team, and this is something that is irreplaceable and common in athletics. -Warren Stotler Assistant Coach Sports I37 . x . w m w 3 Practice was tough but it paid off in the end 6488 Jake Blatt- man, $484 John Silor i454 Danny Clark, 7W6 Daniel Montero, $51 Ismael Cardenas, 752 Chris Adams, 75473, Javier Gutierre$ 1 38 Sports J .
