principalts message In the United States. we are firmly convinced that the American way of life is the best way of life. VVe believe in the dignity and the rights of the individual as opposed to the totalitarian con- ceptethat the state is everything and that the individual must subordinate all phases of his life to the interests of the state. At the present time there is going on in the world a gigantic conflict to determine whether the democratic or the totalitarian way of life shall prevail. The outcome of this struggle will determine whether the people of the world will live in freedom or in the bonds of servitude. The public school systems of this country will play no small part in determining the outcome of the struggle between democracy and communism. The very backbone and bulwark of democracy are enlightened and intelligent people who are able to assume and carry out the responsibilities amt ob- ligations which our way of life entails. I earnestly pray that in Humboldt County High School we have implanted in our students the seeds of justice, mercy and tolerance, which when germinated will help maize our world a better world for all mankind. superintendentis message XVIiat is a successful boy or girl, judged by the standards of modern society? By what criteria can '16 be measured? VVhatever device is used to determine his or her success must be one that takes into strong account his growth during his school life, as well as potential which he has within himself to continue that growth, and his ability to grow must be manifest in his mental capacities, his character, his social behavior. his concept of right and wrong and his attitude toward learning. If you, as students, consider those around you each school day and try to select the qualities in each individual which are indicative of his real and lasting success, you will discover that those quali- ties spring in great part from a desire to enlarge his understanding and scope by growing, not only IN his subject fields, but WITH the demands of the life about him. He constantly readjusts his values to meet the requisites of a very complex life. VVhen you have left Humboldt County High School and go out to assume other responsibilities in various places, this necessity to grow will be upon you then, as it is in your school now. Your superiors in your work field will judge you then, just as your teachers judge you now by the capacity which you indicate for enlargement and growth. He who is stolid enough to sit contentedly amidst his static accomplishments will soon realize that those accomplishments are deteriorating in value, and that. all too quickly. they mean nothing at all to the world around him. uMR.
