Text from Pages 1 - 46 of the 1951 volume:

0m ?zc'mald More than a century ago the route down the Humboldt River to Frenchmanis Ford Hater called Winnemuccai was taken by early wagon trains, trappers, cattlemen, and color- ful Basque sheep outfits. Because of the ap- parent undeveloped resources, many of these adventurers settled in the various parts of present Humboldt County. With the extensive. grazing lands and rich mineral deposits the p0pulation grew steadily. During the past one hundred years enter- prising business establishments and attractive homes have been built throughout the county. To the pioneers of the past and the residents of the present, we, the students of Humboldt County High School, dedicate this yearbook. We realize that it was necessary to overcome many obstacles in order to create this coun- ty and we are grateful for the constructive interest in the youth shown by its men and women. Because of their support, education has consistently progressed and we are sure that it will continue to do so. MR. FRANK FLANDEKS MR. Then the whistle blew, and Joe realized that he had just ridden his last bronc for that rodeo season. It was Labor Day, and he wished tomorrow would never come. But it did. and he found $ H w I i I I H H I himself in the old brick school building with 171 of his friends. It wasn't so bad after all though -- to be back at the old grind. A couple weeks passed by uneventifully; then the photographer appeared and ran the word cheese into the ground; all for a good cuase. however - - THE WINNADA. Slst brought Admission Day and the grand parade at Carson City. Joe just happened to overhear Mr. Bruce ask a judge where the Winnernucca band was to line up. The judge's reply was, You just get back in line, sonny; your instructor will tell you where to line up. On an unusually sunny afternoon in November. the second to be exact, Joe was gazing out of a study hall window dreaming of camping trips in Alaska, and $ traveling down the Colorado . . v . . Rivet Gorge 1n a boat. Standard QUXI D. I I H p. l 011 had shown a f1lm on the prev1ous day, so maybe that ex- plains Joe s far-away look. On November 6th everyone had a swell time at Mr. Bruce's birthday party. Then a few days later the whole school roared with laughter bver The Boardinghouse Reach - - a delectable Junior serving. On November 18th a Slow Boat To China was launched at the Sophomore Hop. Joe wasn't the only one who was glad to see Thanksgiving vacation roll around on the 23rd. The girls had a new racket when they came back from vacation, though. In fact, Joe found T wirp Season 3 real money saver. The next day Joe thought the speech class monodramas were quite comical. Then, after a whole week of fun, Twirp Season was topped off by the Twirp Dance. There were two interesting debates December 4th and 8th: the former was on the voting question; the latter on Federal Aid to Education. Finally December 20th rolled around and brought the Christ- I -. mas Music Concert and. . . . . . . . Christmas vacation! I1 bl A I I H :l I The next few weeks after vacation. Joe was kept busy, since he was a center on A squad. Dec- . ' ember 22nd saw the team in Carson; December 23rd, it was Fernley; January 6th -- Carlin. Then Elko came here the 12th, and the next night everyone had a jolly time at the Junior - Ii; l'Ih ' sh Prom. The team was off to Battle Mountain again on the 19th. u A About that time Joe was recovering from an excruciating head- achgg which he blamed on the semeSter exams. January 20th was the big day in Lovelock -- basketball volleyball, and a G. A. A. feed. January 26th Wells came here; the next day White Pine came, and the drill team performed. 40 Wells with the team. Then the next Besides basketball, the main events game. the G.A.A. dinner, and the Saturday found the team headed for February 3rd. Joe went to week Lovelock was here. were the girls' volleyball Drill Team performance. Fallon. The following week was the F.H. A. Valentine party, but for some strange reason. that didn't interest Joe much. Two days later he was on his way to Elko for another game. Then on March lst the Zone Tournament started in Elko. Joe had a lot of fun there. but apparently he and his colleagues had forgotten to eat their Wheaties for breakfast. Plans for going to State collapsed when they lost the game to Ely. Joe was quite amused by The Detroiters. five vocalists, who came to entertain H. C. H. S. March 23rd was another happy day -- Easter vacation began. Then it was drawing close to Match 315t and Joe had a problem. He just couldn't get up the nerve to ask that new girl. Mary Arm. to the Fresh Frolic. In fact. he hadn't even found the nerve to talk to her! It was really a bad situation. The Lady Luck stepped in the day Joe was caught talking in study hall. Mr. Baum told him he would have to move to the seat be- hind Mary Ann. 80 this gave Joe a chance to talk to hertafter the bell rang, of coursei and before he knew it, he had asked her to go to the Fresh Frolic. That dance was a success! On April 13th. Joe didn't pay much attention to the F.H.A. Roundup. But then on the 20th he traveled to Elko with the band for the Music Festival. Elko was always quite interest- ing -- or maybe it was the people in Elko. Before he knew it. the Junior-Senior Ball had rolled around. So Joe mustered up his courage and asked Mary Ann again. Joe was pretty busy during the next few weeks, May 5th were the Yetington Relays; Zone was on the 12th; and State on the 19th. Then on the 27th, Joe and his fel- low Seniors had Baccalau- reate. and it dawned on him that he wouldn't be coming back next year. The next two days were spent with a great deal of head scratching over semesters. Then Memorial Day followed, so Joe had time to re- cuperate from the exams. The next day Commencement exercises in the gym were almost disastrous when too many people perched on the balcony. and it creaked and groaned as plaster fell from the ceiling. It was vacated in time to prevent the calamity. though. On June lst. Joe went back to collect his refunds and take a last look at H. QR. S. Then he walked home, feeling like a free man. until he found the letter from Uncle Sam waiting for him on the kitchen table. Well, he would just have to wait a few years to ride and rope again.
