He stopped sometimes to roar a ripping jest At one who often failed to meet his wit— So mingled weighty thought with foolery, A mark of genius, world-recognized. His strident voice so probed, so stirred to thought, So sometimes angered those who dared oppose, They felt within a rise of vital force Which they half-numb had hitherto unknown, And so walked stronger men from out the fray. Provoker of debate, a stimulant To sluggish thought, a probe of outgrown ways, He sought to tie our little town to what J, He saw of world affairs.
