as Director of Secondary Education. The next step was accreditation. After an official inspection by the State Education Department, the Board of Regents of The University of New York accredited Human Resources School as a six-year secondary school. The School graduated it first senior high class of sixteen students in 1967. One of these- alumni is now attending law schoolg another is studying for his master's degree in computer sciences. Some of the others are employed in the business Worldg some are married. Our most recent milestone was the addition of a new auditorium-gymnasium, cafeteria, and discovery labo- ratory complex completed in 1972. This building is dedi- cated to the memory of Edwin J. Beinecke, Sr. There are still many plans for the future, for Human Resources School will grow as it has helped us to grow. Uur School The Staff of Milestone '73 wishes that it were possible to impart the excitement, nostalgia, and enthusiasm we have felt as we researched the earlier days of Hu- man Resources School. On the end sheets we did in- clude some pictures from those days. From a classmate, from teachers, one of whom was a student during that time, from our Headmaster, and from Dr. Viscardi, we got many interesting insights and facts. Dr. Viscardi's deep concern was that the disabled child should have a place to attend school. He also wanted to improve the attitude of the public toward the disabled as well as the disabled person's attitude toward himself. l ,, The first classroom was in the area now occupied by Research and Training. Our school began in an informal atmosphere - one room, one teacher - sixteen stu- dents - all working together and helping each other. Mr. Switzer was not only the teacher but did many of the chores as well - bus driving included. The school operated under a provisional charter granted in 1963. Each year the enrollment almost doubled and the faculty also increased. The need for more space had already been anticipated and a school building was under construction. In 1965 we moved into a building of our very own. In that same year Mr. Switzer was ap- pointed Headmaster and Dr. Bormann joined the staff 2
