However, several world events have startled us-the shooting down of the Korean Air Lines 747 by the Soviets that killed all 269 people aboard, the invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops to rescue U.S. citizens there, and the kill- ing of some 241 Marines who were in Lebanon as part of a peace-keeping force. The weather also played an impor- tant part this past year. There was re- cord cold weather in December-13 days with temperatures below freez- ing. The economy has been much in the news this year. The recession has come to Oklahoma. The state's econo- my has been seriously affected, and money to schools has been reduced. Hulbert like the rest of the schools, has had to tighten its belt. This year has seen some changes at school. Two computers were pur- chased, one for elementary and one for high school. The band finally got to wear the uniforms that were re- ceived at the end of last year. Punk appeared briefly. The pictures on these two pages may stir a pleasant memory of 1984. 2 INDIAN CLUB OFFICERS: Mark, sec.; Jerry, pres.; Johnny, trcas.; Rodney, v.p. (Clockwise) Ron Edwards, Sherry Mayfield. It's creed stresses ... homes for America's future . . . where truth, love, security, and faith will be realities, not dreams. Each member bring a preschool child to a party complete with refresh- ments, a tree, gifts, and, of course, Santa Claus. This year Santa Claus bore a striking resemblance to Robert Rose. Each tot present had a wonder- ful time, even though one did say, Is he the real Santa Claus? Child development and child care are important parts of Home Econom- ics I. The students get first-hand ex- perience by inviting three or four preschoolers to come to school for an hour each day for five days. This year they had three students who must have made considerable progress be- cause they graduated on the fifth day. They had caps, diplomas, and proud mamas just like real graduates. 12 Some students get the required one year of home economics necessary for FHA membership by taking family living. One activity of the family liv- ing class has developed into a tradi- tion at Hulbert. This is the mock wed- ding. Students not only plan the wed- ding but also have an actual ceremo- ny. Members of the class are as fol- lows: Michelle Gordon, Marvin Mor- gan, Melissa Crice, Buster Gifford, Lisa Moore, Patti Walls, Jerri Dail, Sherry Young, Leisa Fore, Johnny Morrison, Rodney Teague, Greg Thomas, David Warden, Charles Lil- lard, and Chris Foster. Amber Carey was flower girl and Ryan Fisher ring bearer. Mr. Bruce Fisher was the min- ister. 13 4-H Junior And Senior High First Row: Michelle Gordon, Patti Walls, Tommy Riley, Vince Lee, Hershall Shannon, Joe Hooper, Robert Kilpatrick, Roy Smith, and Greg Shade. They have looked forward to working in the office, taking speech and drama, going on the senior trip, and of course, graduating. Sponsors Harley Disheroon and Linda Baker will help them through the year. Blue and white are their colors and the blue carnation is their flower. Graduation will be held Sunday afternoon. May 13, on the football field. The following is the class motto: Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. Take what comes. Titus Blanket 19 Homecoming Week Homecoming week is always exciting. The seniors' window at Bob's Auto expressed their feelings, but only won second place. Denise, as a wildcat, and Rhonda, as a football player, were awesome on the float, but it also won second. Monica, Terri, Sherry, Denise, and Candie brought punk to HHS. Queen Kim and Candie were, of course, quite beautiful. 20 Activities i The seniors have participated in many activities. They elected the following officers: Candie Disheroori, treas.; Denise Hinton, sec.; LaWana Benge, v.p.; and Michael Craig, pres. Rob Marsellis, Ronald Young, and Naomi Fielden campaigned for student council offices. Sherman Sterling and Shane Sweeney really got into the lip singing in speech and drama. 21 Michael Craig Melissa Crice Rhonda Daniels 22 Compliments of JOY's BEAUTY SHOP of Hulbert Ronald Edwards Naomi Ficlden Steven Fairchild Leisa Fore Candie Disheroon Joe Farmer Mike Foster Wayne Gardner Buster Gifford Compliments of MR. Sponsor Melinda Ellis said this has been “an outstanding and memorable class. Pictured on these two pages are scenes from the Christ- mas plays. The following are mem- bers of the class: Johnny Jackson, Mi- chael Jackson, Dale Kilpatrick, David Smith, Sherman Sterling, Greg Thom- as, Mark Whitekiller, Ronald Young, and Shane Sweeney. Also, LaWana Benge, Rhonda Daniels, Candie Di- sheroon, Denise Hinton, Kim Morri- son, Kim Ridenhour, Tammy Vaughn, and Monica Wynn. 52 Lip Singing Assemblies And Contests Lip singing was one of the most enjoyed speech activities. Speech stu- dents were observed singing to them- selves for days to make sure they had the words just right. Records, tapes, stereos, and various outfits appeared on the day the students were to panto- mime their favorite singers. Appear- ing on stage in the Community Cen- ter were Hank Williams, Dolly Par- ton, Sweet, Blondie, and Linda Ron- stadt. Some seniors also entered another essay contest sponsored by Optimist International. The topic was Free- dom Our Most Precious Heritage. The speech class organized and con- ducted a Veteran's Day Assembly. They presented a series of patriotic speeches including The American Creed, The American Flag, and others. Michael Craig, student council president, the band, and a speaker also participated. Preceding the program, representa- Shown receivingi, medals from the Op- timist representative are Ron Ed- wards, third place; Candie Disheroon, second place; Rhonda Daniels, first place; and Melinda Ellis, sponsor. Four students also entered the Farmers Union Speech Contest. These students, their area of competition, and their placing are as follows: Can- die Disheroon (REC) second place, Michael Jackson (Farmers Union) sec- ond place, David Smith (4-H) first place, and Sherman Sterling (REC). tives from the Masonic Lodge pre- sented checks to six winners in an essay contest. First place winners re- ceiving $25 were Art Neitch and Rhonda Daniels. Second place win- ners receiving $15 were Candie Di- sheroon and Ron Edwards. Kim Ri- denhour and Michael Jackson, third place winners, each received $10. The trophy winners entered district competition in Muskogee, and Candie Disheroon won a third place trophy in her division. Monty Morgan is another winner. Not only was he selected as Hulbert High School's winner in the DAR Good Citizen program but also was chosen as the winner in county com- petition. Selection was based on the qualities of leadership, dependability, service, and patriotism. 54 THE YEAR THE Sports Notes The senior high boys finished second in their conference and in their district. The high school girls finished second in the Tri-County Conference but were first in their district. They finished their season as regional consolation champs with a 17-9 record. Freshman girls clinched their conference title by going unbeaten in conference play. They won the conference tournament and won 18 straight games. The seventh and eighth grade girls had an 8-0 record and won the Porter Elementary Tourna- ment. Coach Leroy Qualls The Hulbert Rider Wrestling teams show much promise. In junior high Charles Walls made All-Con- ference, and Brian Stopp was 3rd in the Junior High conference and was 4th in the high school division. Brian and Charles had an outstanding season posting 30 wins and only 3 losses. Mike Adair won 3rd in the conference at heavyweight. The junior high wrestlers, mostly 7th and 8th graders, had a full team with 4 substitutes. The high school wrestlers placed high in all 3 major tournaments against much larger schools. Loyd Berry placed 3rd in the confer- ence and at the Salina tournament, and 4th in the Wagoner tournament. Rodney Teague was the outstanding high school wrestler with an 18-4 record. Rodney placed in all 3 major tour- naments. Johnny Morrison made All-Confer- ence in the heavyweight division. Johnny placed 2nd in the conference tournament, and 3rd at the Wagoner and Salina tournaments. Rodney, Johnny, and Brian placed 4th in re- gionals, and Rodney also placed 4th in state. Hulbert returns almost all starters for next year, losing only one, senior Shane Sweeney, to graduation. Coach Bruce Fisher We're very proud of our football teams this year. After 19 years of drought we made it to the state play-offs. I hope that the seniors have great success in their futures and that their win- ning attitude carries on to next year. The junior high Rider boys had a lot of spirit. They tied the conference for first place with a 5- 1 record. They had a 7-5 overall record. Coach Don White 56 The mighty Riders come onto the field. Paradoxically, every- thing was the same and yet different. In 1984 as in every other year, the following pictures and comments seem to be true: Staff members put forth extra effort to make school a special place. People outside the school give time and money to make the school better. 94 Students really do work before they go to town for fun and games. THI YEAR THE ADVERTISING •4 ■ INI RYE A INI HULBERT FIRE DEPARTMENT The Hulbert Volunteer Fire Department is now about 16 years old. It has developed from a group of two or three men and a 1936 fire truck into a well- trained, well-equipped group of 15 men, a tank truck, a '63 fire truck, a new $36,000 fire truck, and a $45,000 building. Money was raised through a one- cent sales tax and a weekly bingo. One person who has been largely responsible for making Hulbert's Fire Department one of the finest in the state is Chief Frank Teague. Volunteers pictured below are Teague, Leon White, Tommy Truitt, Paul Kile, Jerry Pruitt, Gary Willis, Sidney Craig, Dale Fielden, Doc Fielden, Herb Davis, Kenneth Fore, Jr., Howard Daniels, and Kenneth Fore.
