Nordyke. The 1954 Hugoton Eagles suffered the worst season in many years and dropped to the cellar of the Southwest Kansas League for the first time. After having their wings clipped for the first eight games, they found the win column in the last game against Elkart. Coach Lyle Sturdy, assisted by David Craft, virtually had to build a whole new team having only one starter from the 1953 squad. The new unexperienced team was constantly plagued with injuries, with several of the players missing part of the games. There were no standouts on the team, with each boy doing his part well. Jim Nordyke, quarterback, and Kenneth Beavers, tackle , were voted Co-Captains for the homecoming game against Ulysses. The football team showed good spirit and teamwork throughout their schedule, playing their better games in the later part of the season. Being outclassed by stronger Southwest Kansas teams, they hope to have a stronger team next year and a better season. After losing their first three starts to Garden City, Guymon, and Meade, they won their first game trimming the Liberal Redskins in what many proclaimed was the best win of the season. The Eagles had a well balanced team with Todd Ikard, Bill Price, Gerald San- dusky, Tex Demuth, and Ted Hoskinson offering the height and rebound power. Rodney Hinkle and Jim Nordyke were the little players on the team, but they al- ways did their share of work in each game. Although five seniors will be lost from graduation, Dave Craft has plenty of second team reserve strength and is expected to have another powerful team next year.
