The other purposes of the vocational classes are to develope leadership, a respect for the dignity of work, create enthusiasm and to promote high standards in ethics, work, scholarship, and safety. Some of the benefits of these vocational classes are to bring together young men and women with common interest for an exchange of ideas, a discussion of problems, and the opportunity to work toward common purposes, and to promote leadership in the student. They have the motto of: Preparing for Leadership in the World of Work. One of the characteristics of the active vocational student is the responsibility for sharing business at hand. They take pride in the things that they do. They have poise, confidence, and the capability to do the job required. They give credit to others for their contributions. Its sorrow and joy and care — Why, even its beauty all at one time, j Would be more than we could bear But Gui} drops a bit of happiness here, And lowers a shadow there. And each of us has his portion of both, T1k bifter and the fair. And, whether the way be rough or fine, It's a comforting thing to know We've only one step to take at a time, Just one little day to go. Sophomores Say: We are the Hugo High Sophomore class of 1987-88 And there are a few things We would like to set straight: Now, Freshmen like to believe That they have what it takes, But everyone knows Sophomores don't make mistakes And Juniors like to think They're better than the rest. When in reality It's the Sophomores who are best And, of course the Seniors Seem to think they rule. Although the Sophomores Are the ones who are really cool. The cafeteria was under construction from January 1987 to July 1987. It was designed by William M. Lightfoot of Pans,Texas and was built by the J.A. Permenter company of Sher- man, Texas. The building is approximately 11,000 square feet, and cost $435,694 to build. New tables and chairs were purchased, costing between $12,000 and $13,000. The kitchen equipment was furnished by Phillips and Son Refrigeration of Texarkana and cost approx- imately $92,011. The fieldhouse, located on the west side of Gene Nesbit stadium is still under construction. This building was also designed by William M. Lightfoot. It is being constructed by Bobby Glover Construction Co. of Valliant. Work on the building began in September 1987 and completion is expected around Christmas. The building is approximately 5,000 square feet in size and cost approximately $163,617 to con- struct. The Pettyjohn Truckstop, west of town, was purchased for $90,000, fenced and renovated to be used as a School bus maintenance facility. This provided the school system with the ability to perform its own bus maintenance. Wayne Trantham was hired as the system's first full time mechanic. The outside of the fieldhouse, as shown here under construction, is being rocked with native stone to man the original construction of the stadium which was built under the WPA. 80 BOARD OF EDUCATION President: Mr. Stan Ketchum Vice-President: Mr. Don Short Clerk: Mr. Ron Hall Members: Mr. Jim Swink Dr. F.E. We at Hugo High School are proud of our students and believe in developing their talents and abilities to their fullest potential. It's my sincere hope that your days at Hugo High School have been rewarding, enjoyable, and that they have prepared you to meet and deal with the challenges that life presents. Mr. Gerald Stegall Pictured left to right: Ms. Noahkola Shufelt, Secretary, Johnson O'Malley; Ms. Shirley Cody, Secretary; Ms. Billy Jo Searles, Attendance Officer This year has already passed to become part of the good old days. Time will pass before your eyes and in only a few moments you will be members of the community look — ing back on the years you spent at Hugo High School. The memories held in this book will be your guide to many a happy reminiscence. May your memories of Hugo High School be pleasant ones and your futures filled with success. Mr. Tom Frost Pictured at left: Mr. Tom Frost, Assistant Principal 83 This year the question 'What does being a teacher mean to you? was asked to members of the Hugo High School Faculty. The responses we received were as varied as the teachers themselves. Teachers play a major role in the lives of their students consciously, and sometimes uncon- sciously. Young people are influenced by their teachers who are working to prepare them for the future. They help students set goals and find ways for these goals to be achieved. Teachers benefit from contact with their students by sharing their youth, their values, their ideas and the success that comes with achievement. To teach means to care. With this caring comes the desire of the teacher to do his job to the best of his ability, always with the goals of the student in mind. Many years from now we will look back and remember all the happy moments at H.H.S. but most of all we will then realize how much all of our teachers affected us. This is exactly what our very own custodians at Hugo High School are. We at Hugo High School are very proud to have such fine custodians who try their hardest to keep our school spic and span and who always try to keep the safety and clean- liness of our students in mind. Clyde Knight We have six wonderful custodians. There is Kenny Daniels who is the head custodian. Mr. Daniels has a big respon- sibility keeping everything in line. Our other custodians are Millard Mantooth, Don Gray, Connice Mayes, Keith Kaniatobe. We have one other very spe- cial custodian, Mr. Clyde Knight. Mr. Knight has been here for 8 years. Mr. Knight does a great job and he always has a smile on his face. All of our custodians work very hard and Hugo High School is very lucky to have five very fine custodians to keep our rooms clean and keep the overall ap- pearance of the school looking great. 87 FADS AND FASHIONS SONG: I Think We rt- Alone Now COLOR: Blue VIDEO: Is This Love' CAR: BMW (Convertible CLASS: English TV SHOW: Growing Pains TIME OF DAY: Night Time PLACE TO EAT: El Chico 90 The Secret The same question comes up every year, Why isn't the prom in the year- book? Well this year we have decided to reveal the Secret. The yearbook staff has many deadlines to meet in a school year. The problem is that the last duedate is in February so there is no way to include the prom or anything that takes place later than February 5. The only way that any event that takes place after February can ever be included in the “Buffalo Trails” is to do one of two things. The first is to change to a fall delivery yearbook. This would allow us to include a full school year. The yearbook would then be delivered at the beginning of the next school year. The second pos- sibility is to split the year and cover the Spring Semester of one schoolyear and the fall semester of the next year and get the book the first part of April. Those are the options and why we choose to “look back at last year's prom. MARDI GRAS A LOOK BACK Vtfi 92 MASQUERADE The Prom The Jr-Sr Banquet was at 7:30 p.m., Friday May 15 at the Hugo Agriplex. The Banquet started with the Invocation given by Gina Wagner and the Welcome was given by Jami Cody. Following the Welcome, Holly Weaver gave the Response. Special Music Entertainment was provided by Sheila Peddy, Laura Smith, and Nikki Wallace. A dance routine was per- formed by the Sophomore servers. Re- member whens class prophecies were read by Dana Porter and Dewayne Knight. The menu for the banquet included Barbecue Beef and Ham, Slaw, Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Spiced Apple Rings, Bread, Cake, and Iced Tea. The Jr-Sr Prom, which theme was Mardi Gras Masquerade , followed the banquet. Everyone had a fun time. The Juniors did an excellent job put- ting on the 1987 Banquet and Prom. It was a great success. H.S. Memories As we smrted school at we never thought the years would pass so quickly. Now, before our lyes our time at H.H.S has faded away So, this year we have tried to alate a yearbook that will not only show what happened this past year but a yearbook your memories tfill live in foiifed| here wore wet e hence this yearbook
