One of the most important undertakings by the student hod} of Hugo High School each year, may, at first glance, seem to he somewhat frivolous and of secondary importance. I hat undertak- ing is the process of publishing the school annual, Buffalo Trails'9. The importance of this project howe er, is magnified with each passing year, and eventually your old school becomes the means by which you are transported hack in time to reli� e. momentarily, a period in your life that grows more meaningful and precious as times goes by. LOIS BRADY RETIRES After thirty-eight years of teaching in Oklahoma Schools Mrs. Lois Brady retired at the end of the 19H3-H4 school year. The students at Hugo High would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation for her warmness and understand- ing. C oming to Hugo High in 1952 Mrs. Brady had taught seven years at other schools in the state. She has demoted an amazing M y ears to Hugo High School Students where she has served conscientiously as a dedicated Vocational Home Economics teacher and EH A sponsor. Mrs. Brady received her Bach tors degree in 1945 from Southeastern, in 1951 her Vocational Home Ec. Certificate from OA '.. and her Masters degree in 1956 from Texs W omens I diversity at Denton. Texas. Mrs. Brady is missed here at Hugo High, hut we wish her the best and know that she is enjoying working on her ranch and home in Moyers. Oklahoma. Mrs. Brady is an active member of the l)AR and is working on her family history. 8 Mr. Morris J. Upchurch Congratulations to the Annual Staff and the Student C ouncil for making this annual possible under the careful guid- ance and patience of Morris I pchurch. who pioneered and developed the Huf- falo Trails.” This was the statement written by principal Simon Parker when the first issue of Huffalo Trails” was published in 1954. Mr. Upchurch the sponsor of the first Huffalo Trails”, worked with the 1954 Student Council to revive the HHS yearbook which had existed duriing the 50’s, hut had been suspended with the coming of World War II. The yearbook of the AO’s, The Huf falo” contained fewer pages than our traditional 96 and was paperbacked. Mr. Morris I pchurch, one of the finest teachers ever to teach in the Hugo school system, said after 42 years of service to HIIS it was time to clean out his desk, gather up some old memories and say Goodbye” to Hugo High School Among those memories, he said, are the early days” when no class periods were allotted for work on the yearbook, which meant many outside assignments for staff members. Planning hy the edi- tor and sponsor took up many after school hours and when working toward meeting a deadline the staff would often meet around several card tables at the sponsor’s home Mr. I pchurch said that in 1954, as seems to he the case today, the candids were always the favorite part of the annual. The auto-graph pages, too, became a treasured portion of the book as students were able to make their statements to fellow students a permanent part of the annual. W hen asked what highlights stood out in his mind during his years as the year hook sponsor, Mr. I pchurch stated that 195H was a special year because HHS included in the yearbook their own, original Alma Mater. The words were conceived by .Martha Dale Eddie man. Berry Ti reha ugh. Judy Ford, Gail Cum- mings. Jannie Houser. Jo Gail Mobley, Sina Carr, Marie Cowley, and Uela have Tuna, all members of the class of 1957. The words were set to music the following year by Hoh Grant, a I95S graduate of IIHS, and the words and music were then copyrighted. Mr. I pchurch is merit ted for sponsor- ing 17 fine editions of Buffalo I rails hut will also he well remembered for his vears of outstanding instruction of math and science and as a sponsor for the Student ( ouncil,. couch for the 9th grade football team. William Smith 1984-85 President Ronald Reagan was re-elected after running against democratic nominee Walter Mondale and his Vice- Presidential candidate Geraldine Perraro. Sally Ride, America's first woman in space, rocketed to the moon. The threat of nuclear war remained in the back of every students’ mind as the American and Soviet officials negotiated at the arms talks. Oklahoma ’sown ational finals Rodeo was moved to Las Vegas and our own beloved Hugo High School grew another year older. , o arms talks took place here at HHS and no Hugo High School Student was sent to the moon, but we, the 500 students of Hugo High, spent nine important, memorable months in the school. Twenty years from now when we return for class reunions we’ll look hack on those months and those memories August brought about school enrollment and the apprehension of starting yet another school year. Football season stimulated our enthusiasum and as our black and gold colors were displayed, we felt the ripple of Buffalo Pride flow through us. Class officers were elected and competition arose between classes during Spirit Week as each wanted to win the coveted Spirit Banner. Poster and essay contests, boy cheerleading squads, dress up days, and the floats brought points to each class. Friday’s assembly revealed the total number of points and the Seniors were declared the winners of the Black and Gold Spirit Week Banner. Following such an event-filled week, our Buffalos Displayed their talents for the Homecoming Queen and her Court in a tremendously exciting football game bv defeating Atoka. More talent was displayed as the band, along with the flag corps and majorettes, performed at half-time ceremonies. The homecoming game along with others led our football team to the state play-offs - the first time in 6 years. HHS, as well as the whole town of Hugo, supported our Buffs 100%. November was an important month for some Seniors, as those who had turned 18 cast their votes in the national election. The boys who had turned 18 also added their name to the Selective Service list. Our competent basketball teams began their season and added more victories to the records. The vocal music department put on their fall concert which included choreographed numbers and featured many fine soloists. W ith December came that Christmas spirit and the student council candy-gram sales. The profits were added to the council’s fund and would eventually be used to buy the new marquee. The National Honor Society held their progressive dinner. They made their way to four different homes and ate four deliciously prepared courses. Along with the joys of Christmas time came the dreaded semester tests. Hour after hour of studying! Ah, but it paid off when report cards came out. 4s father time left us, we once again started anew with the second semester. The Seniors placed their orders for graduation announcements and caps and gowns and the Juniors prepared to take their AC T test for the first time. The student body selected favorites out of the members of the Senior Class and the coronation of the basketball homecoming queen took place. 90 The girls'and boys' basketball teams were hating an outstanding season in District and Regional Playoffs when snowstorms hit and Hugo High was dismissed for a fite day “winter vacation. Hut all good things must come to an end as did our winter vacation. We returned in time for the FFA members to he sold as slates at the annual Harheque and Slate Auction. The spring livestock show took place and many beautiful, prize winning animals were sold to business people throughout Choctaw County. With the arrival of spring came the spring sports-tennis, track, baseball, and weight lifting. HHS was well represented throughout the state in Stillwater, and McAlester. Ensembles, soloists, and large groups brought hack numerous superior and excellent ratings. The FFA planned and held a successful banquet at the Agriplex. The new officers gate their acceptance speeches and the I9S5-S6 sweetheart was crowned. The Juniors chose the prom theme and spent many work-filled hours decorating the Agriplex using the money they had earned from the post-game dances. Their hard labor resulted in a beautifully bedecked banquet and prom, the girls all came donned in beautiful southern belle dresses and the guy s in their neatly pressed tuxedos. The Senior class president expressed his appreciation to the Junior class for such a job well done, and addressed his fellow classmates as a group for the final time. Graduation day finally came. The valadictorian and salutatorian gave their addresses to the Senior class. 4s the band played softly the Seniors one by one walked down to receive their diplomas; their passports into the working world. Twelve long, hard years finally paid off. As we all go our seperate ways let’s remember Good-bye is not an ending when you know that people care. For miles may come between you but warm thoughts are always there. Good-bye is not an ending hut a different start for you. A time for making brand new friends and seeing dreams come true.
