Child care service is available to a limited number of students who are enroiied in a vocational biook ' program or class. Children are cared for at the school while their parents are attending classes, Care is provided for four infants below the age of eighteen months. An additional fifteen children are cared for with ages ranging to four years. - The program offers a variety of activities geared to the ages and needs of the particuiar child. The facilities are well : supplied with equipment and learning toys that offer a challenge to the developing children. The program is staffed I by a teacher and two trained aides. Meals are provided in a kitchen in the area. Opportunities for developing I parenting skills and learning important concepts of child deveiopment are made avaiiable through inservice programs held for parents throughout the sohooi year i A study was made of the grades and attendance patterns of the students that took part in this program last year a When compared to a group of .student-parents that did not receive chiid care, it can readily be seen that providing on- i site day care improved both grades and attendance. It can also be noted that nineteen students that had applied for ' the program dropped out of sehool before an opening was availabie. Most iisted the lack of child care as the reason i for leaving school A total of ninety students made appiication to participate in the program, but only thirty nirIIe Werej able to be cared for at some time during the year. Any student who has financial need and is in a vocational class or ptogram at Hughes High School may register their child fer placement in the chitd care area. 40 Next year- this program will be available to students at Aiken High School due to Hughes being changed to an alternative school Infant Toddler Care Program Teachers: Anna Lane, Becky Hurter, Patricia Bail Student Life Through The Halls Of Hughes :5? In contrast, the first Hughes Annual or yearbook was published in 1870. forty-six years after the death of Thomas Hughes. Through the years, Hughes High School has seen promising young students become leaders in many fields and develop into fine athletes. We, in 1989, sincerely wish to think that if Thomas Hughes were to look down upon us today, he would be proud of what he saw. Echoing a voice from the past, we say 'tUnIettered, lowly, modest and obscure, And yet his name through ages will endure. HUGHES HIGH SCHOOL, 2515 Clifton Avenue, the second oldest high school in the Cincinnati public school system, was established with the bequest of a cobbler, Thomas Hughes td. 1824; Hughes came from England to Cincinnati in early nineteenth century, acquired some farmland. and set up a shop on Liberty Street between Main and Sycamore next to tanner William Woodward. Both men bequeathed property to start schools for boys whose parents could not afford to pay for their education. The trustees of the Hughes bequest allowed the estate to accumulate until 1851 when the Woodward and Hughes funds were united and, as the Union Board of High Schools, became a part of the Cincinnati public school system. Students who lived east of Race Street attended classes at Woodward High School, built in 1831 in Over- the-Rhine. Those who lived west of Race went to Central High School until Hughes High School was completed in 1853 on the corner of Fifth and Mound Streets in the West End. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as the city's population moved out of the basin, so did its institutions. Between 1908 and 1911. the present Hughes High School building designed by Walter Stevens, was - erected in Fairview. The school's Jacobean style was common for early twentieth century academic buildings. but Hughes also has some interesting Gothic features, such as gargoyles. After the new school opened, the former Hughes became Jackson Elementary School, a colony school that enrolled oniy Black children. During the first several decades of the twentieth century. about half of Hughes' graduates continued their education. Attending the school carried a certain amount of prestige. and among its alumni were a number of Cincinnati businessmen and professionals. Enrollment was near capacity, and additions, designed by Tietig 8. Lee, were completed in 1954. The character of Hughes' student population changed in the 19503 and 19603 as redistricting redrew attend- ance area boundaries, and as Fairview and the other basin and older communities from which the school drew its students also changed. Increasing numbers of poorer Appalachian and then Black youngsters attended Hughes, which had previously been predominately White. The percentage of its graduates going on to college declined and absenteeism increased. Many of the older faculty members were less able to meet the needs of these students and post World War II education. In addition the school lacked adequte athletic facilities. Whiie this physical problem was addressed in the mid-1960's with the construction of an addition for athletic activities, other problems continued to worsen. By the late 1960's the school's population had become predomi- nantly Black tover 85 We i. Special programs and vocational courses failed to improve low achievement scores or to prevent increasing apathy, absenteeism and student crime. Since then, Hughes has been largely turned around by a new generation of young, highly motivated and mostly Black school administrators. teachers, and staff working with community groups. By the mid-1970is, most of the discipline problems had been reduced to a manageable level. and by the early 1980's, the percentage of graduates continuing their education had returned to about what it had been at mid-century. In 1984, an alternative or magnet program, Computers Unlimited, was set up as part of the Cincinnati System's attempt to improve racial balance and boost enrollment. Further, a day care center opened providing child care so that teenage mothers could stay in school as well as offering after school care tor the working parents. Eric 5mm ' 90 Salute To Mrs. Cash served as secretary to Principal Lofell Williams at Hughes High School for 15 years. She was an exemplary secretary and good friend to all staff members. She was the office manager, substitute mother and walking encyclo- pedia. She knew all about time management, stress management, and money management. She was called upon to be doctor, lawyer, and Indian Chief - or at least, nurse, releree, and plain old member Of the BIG RED tribe. Mrs. Cash always took the time to listen, to advice, and laugh with students and stall. She was indeed a dedicated worker and an invalu- able member of the BIG RED staff. Mrs. Cash retired as secretary in December, 1989. We miss her and will always have wonderful and fond memories of HDonna . The Yearbook Committee would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Cash for her generous gift to help support the publication of the Hlast Hughes yearbook.
