In America, millions oT people are leading sTrange, new lives and work- ing day and nighT To help speed vicTory. Millions oT boys and young women are serving The counTry on Tar-Tlung baTTle-TronTs. America is aT war! Millions oT bonds and war sTamps are being sold To preserve America. To meeT The emergency, engineers, docTors, and lawyers are Taking Their places Tor war and The posT-war world. America is aT war! As each household rouTine is changing, so are The schools o'F America. A drasTically diTTerenT war emphasis is placed on The American school. l944 climaxed The war-Time preparedness oT high schools. HUGHES is only one oT Thousands oT ciTy high schools ThaT enTered inTo a changed rouTine. This record, Hughes in Our Time, porTrays Hughes in iTs daily war acTiviTies and curriculum Tor war - and, we hope Tor a peace ThaT is lasTing. Following close upon The ouTbreak in The PaciTic, Hughes sTudenTs experienced a more concenTraTed program, six one-hour bells. WiTh The advenT oT This program, came such new courses as aero- nauTics. a sTudy oT The principles oT TlighT, invesTigaTion and solu- Tion oT These laws: navigaTion, a maThemaTical subiecT. ploTTing courses and Tinding posiTions: and radio code. To aid The Army To Train radiomen and mechanics wiTh greaTer TaciliTy and relieve The demand Tor people wiTh such experience. GreaTer emphasis was placed on The commercial courses which will replace men and women in The service and aid businessmen in This crisis. ' The language deparTmenT was changed Trom a heavy college preparaTory course, To a sTreamlined program oT Spanish and French. Spanish needed To aid The increasing SouTh American Trade. and French used in European legaTion work. The LaTin conTinued as The basis Tor The oTher language Training. Machine shop and mechanical drawing was enlarged To accommo- daTe The need Tor skilled engineers and machinisTs. An expanding program opened a new road To sTudenTs To Take special aviaTion courses aTTer school and receive graduaTion crediTs. For publiciTy and display purposes, The ArT DeparTmenT's program was adiusTed To Turnish The school and governmenT wiTh war bond posTers and valuable coniuncTions To QuieT!
