AT The Time oT his deaTh in l824, he probably never dreamed ThaT ouT oT his eTTorT To TurTher The cause oT public educaTion, would resul'T The sTaTely building on The hill, vasT and well equipped. Thomas l-lughes leTT, by will, all his properTy To The ciTy, requesTing ThaT iT be used To TurTher The public educaTion oT youTh. AT TirsT This money helped send sTudenTs, poor buT eager To improve Their minds. To Woodward College. ln I847, CenTral l-ligh School was organized in The basemenT oT a l.uTheran Church, wiTh Mr. l-l. l-l. Barney The principal. Thomas Hughes' dream oT Tree educaTion was Tinally realized in l85l when, as Tree public high schools. Woodward and l-lughes were esTablished by The Union Board oT l-ligh Schools. From Greenwood l-lall aT SixTh and Vine STreeTs was graduaTed The TirsT class oT l-lughes l-ligh School in I852. On January I7, I853 was dedicaTed The TirsT Hughes l-ligh School building, locaTed on FiTTh STreeT opposiTe Mound STreeT. A sTeady increase in The number oT sTudenTs broughT abouT a realizaTion ThaT a larger and a more modern building musT be erecTed. As a resulT, in l9lO aT The corner oT CliTTon Avenue and lvlclvlillan STreeT, a building in The Tudor-GoThic sTyle was compleTed, cosT- ing Sl,OO0,000 and accommodaTing TiTTeen hundred pupils. ln l925 a large wing was added: iT is sTill lcnown as The new building. Today l-lughes l-ligh School boasTs an illusTrious hisTory oT almosT a cenTury. EighT compe- TenT men have held The posiTion oT principal, and have become loved and revered in The minds oT many. LeT us noT TorgeT, as we leave l-lughes l-ligh School, an Ameri- can insTiTuTion, To malce our way in The world, ThaT we owe a greaT debT To ThaT humble cobbler, Thomas l-lughes, who had a vision oT Tree educaTion Tor The people.
