l-IILE The machines were humming and The assembly lines were moving sTeadily, The newly organized VicTory Corps Tor high school sTudenTs was eTTicienTly conducTing numerous drives Tor old iron, brass. copper, coaT hangers, and all Types oT meTal, To keep The machines humming and The line moving. Paper drives were held Trom Time To Time To meeT shorTages. A diTTerenT phase oT war emphasis was The weekly sale oT war bonds and sTamps. l-lomerooms compeTed and some sTrived To meeT goals, such as 200 riTles or a jeep and always Trying To score IOOOXO parTicipaTion. AudiTorium assemblies have a war-Time signiTicance as speakers Trom all parTs oT The world and war zones were broughT To The plaTTorm To Tell Their experiences or describe homelands. A special pre-inducTion course Tor The older boys was given To Tamiliarize Them wiTh all branches oT service. The girls heard lecTures by members oT The women's branches oT The armed services as well as by nurses. college heads, and professional women. In The second semesTer, courses in hygiene and army regulaTions and conTacTs were given The senior boys. A similar course in hygiene and oTher business world conTacTs was given The senior girls. By acceleraTed programs, sTudenTs were enabled To compleTe Their graduaTion crediTs by February and graduaTe aT The halT-year, a chance To Tinish graduaTion crediTs as well as compleTe a college ToundaTion. The girls were sTudying To Take im- porTanT posiTions vacaTed by servicemen. Several hundred sTudenTs were excused early or all day during December To serve as salespeople in deparT- menT sTores and aid The PosT OTTice in The disTribuTion oT The holiday mail. ONE oT The war services which broughT many new experiences was The organizaTion oT an air raid group lasT year To provide proTecTion Trom bombing. AT Hughes, as in oTher large buildings, every room was given a speciTic space on The inner Tloors and basemenTs. During pracTice drills The large corps oT wardens consTanTly paTrolled The halls and kepT sTaTions aT The Tire exTinguishers and sand buckeTs Tor proTecTion againsT possible incendiary bombs. In coniuncTion wiTh air raids, FirsT Aid became a Timely and helpTul course. AT TirsT, volunTary classes were held aTTer school: buT as The imporTance oT This Training became greaTer, all The juniors were given The course To replace one oT Their gym bells. MUSICAL organizaTions had Their share in The TransTormaTion. From classical ballads To inspiring service songs, The A Cappella Choir paved The way. AT a special appearance aT The Union Terminal lasT ChrisTmas, The choir enTerTained The soldiers arriving and leaving wiTh a program oT carols. An ArmisTice day observance was given aT Emery AudiTorium. Bonds-A-Poppin' , The bond rally, scored a huge hiT as an aid To The war sTamp sale. The day beTore The show, The sTamp sale soared above The SIOOO goal. T-lighlighTing The war program, oT The choir was The cuTTing oT a record oT ChrisTmas carols. The songs were broadcasT and The records senT To The boys on Guadalcanal.
