The Deaconess l-lospiTal is locaTed on The norTh side oT Old Hughes. This shady porTion is always quieT, because sTudenTs, in an eTTorT noT To disTurb The hospiTal, do noT gaTher here. SiTTing on The greaT sTone ledges or sTanding on The TronT plaza, one sees The UniversiTy oT Cin- cinnaTi spread over iTs greaT span oT TerriTory. DirecTly across Trom Hughes is The U. C. Law School. Daily aT The end oT The lunch period sTudenTs waTch The Air Corps CadeTs march Through The UniversiTy grounds To class. A usual sighT To l-luziTes are The nurses nexT door hurrying To go on duTy. There is an ever-presenT hum oT sTreeT cars. From The norTh and ouTlying suburbs comes The CliTTon-Ludlow and Trom The easT and all TransTer poinTs in ThaT direcTion comes The CrossTown. WheTher iT be beTore 8:30 AM.. TourTh bell or aTTer school, The walks and TronT sTeps oT l-lughes are always crowded wiTh busy sTudenTs in Triendly gaTherings. 6

During foolball season every day lhal a game is lo be played. a corner of 'rhe hall is 'rurned over lo rhe l-lughes Club and Pep Club To sell shakers, noise makers. l-lughes slickers, pennanls. and buHons. ln flower season, early morning flower sales are held by lhe bolany deparlmenl from our own Hughes greenhouse. To lhe visilor al l-lughes a greeling is given by lhe lwo senior girls ar lhe desk marked lnuCorma+ion. When 'rhe bell rings, people move. The ufiufuh bell, Jrhe greaf fronl hall is indeed a deserled parl of l-lughes unlil lhree o'clock when sludenl acfivily again lakes over. 7
