Fhe Mayor of the City of Raleigh is ex officio chairman of the board. The other six members are appointed by the City Council for a term of six years. The superintendent of schools is ex officio secretary of the board. The Board of Trustees is the lawful governing body of the Raleigh Public Schools. having certain responsibilities. duties and authority prescribed by state law. JESSE O SANDERSON Superzntendent Raleigh Public Schools DANIEL WERT SANDERS came to Ra School in 1945 He IS a native Tennes sean and received his BS degree from Middle Tennessee State College Mur freesboro Tennessee Later he con tmued his education by studying at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Tennessee and received his MA degree from George Peabody College for Teach ers Nashville Tennessee Mr Sanders came to the schools of North Carolina ten years ago after havmg had experience as classroom teacher and hlgh school prmclpal in the schools of Tennessee For seven years before com ing to Raleigh he was prlnclpal of Star Hlgh School Star North Carolina He IS a member of the professional educational fratermtles Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta P1 He is an honorary member of Kappa Phl Kappa He is a teacher of the Mens Bible Class at Hill yer Memorial Christian Church and a member of the Raleigh Rotary Club JESSE 0 SANDERSON was born 1n Wayne County on January 19 1901 He received his early education 1n Raleigh North Carolina where he was graduated from high school in 1920 At Duke University ln 1924 he re C6lV9d his AB degree During 1924 and 1925 he attended the la-w school of George Washlngton University Later he did graduate work at summer schools at Duke He began his professional career IH the public schools at Nashville North Carolina in 1925 as athletic coach and teacher of English Follow ing this he was made principal of the Nashville Elementary High schools and served in this capacity from 1926 to 1930 From 1930 to 1932 he was principal of R0bblIlSV1ll6 Consolidated School For ten years he was prmclpal of the Methodist Orphanage School He was made superlntendent of the Raleigh Publlc schools in 1942 DANIEL W SANDERS Prznczpal Hugh Morson High School Q . leigh as principal of Hugh Morson High V 9
