JESSE O SANDERSON Superzntendent Raleigh Public Schools DANIEL WERT SANDERS came to Ra School in 1945 He IS a native Tennes sean and received his BS degree from Middle Tennessee State College Mur freesboro Tennessee Later he con tmued his education by studying at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Tennessee and received his MA degree from George Peabody College for Teach ers Nashville Tennessee Mr Sanders came to the schools of North Carolina ten years ago after havmg had experience as classroom teacher and hlgh school prmclpal in the schools of Tennessee For seven years before com ing to Raleigh he was prlnclpal of Star Hlgh School Star North Carolina He IS a member of the professional educational fratermtles Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta P1 He is an honorary member of Kappa Phl Kappa He is a teacher of the Mens Bible Class at Hill yer Memorial Christian Church and a member of the Raleigh Rotary Club JESSE 0 SANDERSON was born 1n Wayne County on January 19 1901 He received his early education 1n Raleigh North Carolina where he was graduated from high school in 1920 At Duke University ln 1924 he re C6lV9d his AB degree During 1924 and 1925 he attended the la-w school of George Washlngton University Later he did graduate work at summer schools at Duke He began his professional career IH the public schools at Nashville North Carolina in 1925 as athletic coach and teacher of English Follow ing this he was made principal of the Nashville Elementary High schools and served in this capacity from 1926 to 1930 From 1930 to 1932 he was principal of R0bblIlSV1ll6 Consolidated School For ten years he was prmclpal of the Methodist Orphanage School He was made superlntendent of the Raleigh Publlc schools in 1942 DANIEL W SANDERS Prznczpal Hugh Morson High School Q . leigh as principal of Hugh Morson High V 9 www!!! I . fil570R7 0 Tiff CM 5' 0F 1948 When crisp September came around in the year 19-14 a group of pilgrims had assembled at Hugh Morson High School to make plans for their four vear Journey together Each pilgrim had ln his heart a bit of excitement as he was ready to start out from the Inn Before leaving on their Journey thev selected Miss Mary Penney as governor and Ned Davis for chief knight For colors they chose blue and white for a flower the red rose and for their motto Love Honor Loyalty It was spring before they interrupted the pilgrimage to have a big soclal which was 1n the form of a p1cn1c at Pullen Park The feast was bountiful and skating swlmming and dancing were enjoyed by everyone Afterwards with hearts serene they journeyed on They had been on their Journey a year and in the fall of 1945 stopped in a near by Inn to select new leaders The new advlser was Miss Nancy Beddmgfield and the knlght was Bill Edwards During the year they participated in a magazine campaign and everyone worked hard to make this a big success The main event of the season was the return to Pullen Park for a picnic and dancing By September of the next year they realized that even with a year of hard work before them that many delightful experiences were in store After the first year they lost MISS Penney who waited bv the way for the next group of travelers Now Miss Beddingfield decided to go back to help the later pilgrims Miss Lucy Gilmores guidance as adviser helped to make this a truly remarkable year Officers for the year were B111 Edwards president Worth Boyce vice presldent Dorothy Mills secretary and Carroll Shoemaker treasurer Again they put all their energy into the magazine campaign However the result was that the class came 1n 1n second place They were very proud to have been that successful The receivmg of class rings was one of the most thrilling moments during the Journey The rings were of gold with onyx settlng After receiving rings the pllgrims knew that they would always have a symbol of a wonderful class striving together to prepare themselves better for the future Assistants for the annual staff were elected who after having galned experience this year would be in charge of the annual next year Those winning this honor were Sally Massey editor in chief Bill Simms business manager David Murray advertising manager and B1ll1e Marie Wat kms class editor For years they had looked forward to the Junior Senior Prom The class had a wonderful rated with pastel streamers ros s and an old fashioned frame of lattlce work Evergreens and a make believe balcony added beauty to the background In the mldst of these heavenly sur roundlngs a wonderful evening of dancing was enjoyed by everyone In September of 47 they began the last year of their pllgrlmage It was the1r aim to make this the most outstanding year since it would be their last year together MISS Natalie Coffey as governor gave her time and guldance into maklng this year a great success A very competent group of leaders was elected They were Worth Boyce president Jerry Parrish vlce president Dorothy Mills secretary and Osler Murray treasurer Dianna Farlow was selected as their mascot She was sponsored by Jean Rowe The annual was dedicated to Coach Lee Stone whose winning personality won 1ts way into the hearts of the pllgrlms Senior Superlatlves were also selected during the fall On December 5 1947 Shmy Nose was presented by the pllgrims The members of the cast for the play were Dorothy Mills as Janey Marie Knight as Zip Kathryn Moore as Helen Wade Gallant as Mr Marble Frances Parker as Mrs Marble B1llS1mms as Coach Brown Worth Boyce as George Anderson Phil Clement as Allen Rogers Norma Howard as Madge Grant and Dolores Sykes as Peggy This performance was a big success in every way Once again the pllgrims worked together in such worthv causes as the Red Cross and the March of Dimes Every sen1or home room had a stralght one hundred per cent in the clean up campalgn Then at Christmas everyone did his part in g1v1ng so that those less fortunate might be happier Phe usual magazine campalgn was held ln February Perfect team work made this an out standing event of the year To follow the usual Custom the Junior Class entertained the Seniors at the Junior Semor prom on Aprll 16 The gymnasium was beautifully decorated carrying out the idea of an old Southern Plantation White columns encircled the dance floor and on one side was a lovely Southern mansion The sky was a very soft blue wlth glittering stars The figure was composed of officers of the Junior and senior classes and members of the annual staff with their dates Confederate costumes worn bv those 1n the floor show added to the beautv of the occasion The night soon slipped away leaving only memories of a perfect dance At last they had reached the end of their Journey Those last few days however were very exciting The Senior DICHIC was held at Pullen Park Then on Sunday night May 30 the Baccalaureate Sermon was delivered at Memorlal Auditorium Class Nlght was held in the school auditorium on June Z and the theme Our Heritage was carried out On June 4 41 , . nv - 7 l Y ' 1 . homes ln Ralelgh Among those who were celebratlng thelr tenth weddlng annlversary were Dorothy Jones Ann Southern Emma Gxbson and Betty Grogan They were all looklng very matronly and happy Next came a lookmg over the Inn where they had spent so many happy hours a group of charmmg matrons were servlng refreshments As they entered Wlth food and drinks everyone reallzed that they were the young women plane and a hel1copter were comlng 1n Pllotmg the Navy plane was John Roberts As h1s passenger stepped out everyone was almost bl1nded by the gold brald Repre sentmg the Army were Magor Eugene Glasgow and Sergeant Gullford Boykln The patch on Sergeant Boykin s arm showed h1m to be a member of the famous Army Band The Navy men were Captaln Robert Beck and Enslgn Lawrence Watklns The last two men to emerge from the plane were from the Coast Guard They were Captaln Osler Murray and Captaln Carroll Shoemaker All of these men were mak1ng thelr career ln the servlce The hel1copter WhlCh came ln wlth the Navy plane was almost obscured by the huge plane When the occupants finally came 1nto v1ew the pllgrlms reallzed that they were S A Kelth and Frank Txsdale They explalned that that was the qulckest vsay for them to get from the west where S A was a prosperous wheat farmer and Frank was ralslng horses As more and more of the pllgrlms assembled they began to dlscuss thelr home town and
