On account of having attended separate schools the class was not really begun until 1928, when approximately two hundred and forty pupils were enrolled in the old Junior High School on Morgan Street. Although nothing eventful happened that year, the majority of the present Junior Class will confess that so far, that year was the most en joyable in their school careers. In 1929 we came to Hugh Morson. the usual green freshmen. After being adjusted in high school we held a class meeting and elected the following officers: Francis Worth, Presidentg Elizabeth Davidson Vice President: and Kenlon Brockwell, Secretary and Treasurer. After much discussion it was decided that the class colors would be red and white: the flower, a red roseg and the motto, Semper Fidelis class adviser. The following year the class came back to school, proud but very sadg proud because we were no longer Freshmen, but Sophomores, and sad because more than half the class had been sent to the New High School. Of course the class had to be completely reorganized. This time Miss Nelle Scott. was elected class adviser. The new officers were: Howard Mayo, Presidentg Bruce Cauthen, Vice President' and Sara Monie, Secretary and Treasurer. This year also was uneventful. Dignified Juniorsl How proud we were last fall when we came back to school. For various reasons it took the class longer than usual to begin work this year. Finally at a meeting called by Miss Scott officers were elected as follows: Gordon Smith, President: McCoy Richardson, Vice Presidentg Helen Ruffin, Secretaryg and Billy Wright, a recent addition to our class from Garner, Treasurer' Hazel Beacham, Assistant Editor of the OAK LEAI-'g and Annie May Banks, Assistant Business Manager of the OAK LEAF. Miss Scott appointed a ring committee, and at a meeting later they decided to use the same designs for the class rings and to get them from the same company, It was an exciting day when Mr. Miller took the measurements, and still more exciting when the rings arrived. Probably this closes the history of the Junior F class until the present date. Meanwhile we are looking forward to a bigger and better Junior-Senior Banquet and shall remain Semper Fidelis HAZEL BEACHAM Forty-four which in English translation means Ever faithful. H61'9,S to them one and all! Here's to the most playful mass! Here's to the noisiest in the hall! Perhaps it's all so strange and new, Maybe things are hard to bear, To suddenly grow up is hard to do, To break rules, naturally they'd dare. So here's to their success, And to the way they bear each fall, Of life's blessingsh for them the best, And their response to education's call. Ten games were included on the team's schedule with the locals winning nine and tying one. It is true that our school lost the State Championship at Chapel Hill to Charlotte, but it was a tight contest, and the Charlotte boys took advantage of every possible break to win by a 14-6 count. Opening the championship series here, Raleigh de- feated a strong Fayetteville eleven. Sammy Paul and Captain Dunaway featured this game with beautiful runs. The next game was played at Wilmington, the seaport town. Wilmington outplayed a listless Raleigh eleven the whole of the first half, but the locals came back beautifully in the third and fourth quarters to chalk up two touchdowns. At Riddick Field the following week Raleigh played its third championship fray with Rocky Mount and won by a lone touchdown. Grady Ferrell featured this game with his terrific line smashing. Journeying to Durham, Raleigh passed her way to victory over the Bull City boys avenging a 6-0 defeat of 1929. Raleigh scored three times in the second half to turn back a hard iight- ing, well-coached Goldsboro team. This game gave Raleigh undisputed claim for the Eastern championship. However, the following week the locals were held score- less by a scrappy Wilson outfit. In the games with no championship bearing Raleigh easily defeated its opponents by scores 21-0 over Hen- dersong 31-7 over Mount Oliveg 12-0 over Oxfordg and 39-0 over Whiteville. Mount Olive was the only team on the regular schedule of the locals that was able to cross its goal line. There were many stars as on every good team. Start- ing at the flanks, Ellisberg and Frazier, substitute ends, were outstanding and easily filled the gap left by Reeves and Perry, regulars, who were out because of injuries. At tackle there was not a better all-round football player in the State than Allen Bailey. Thomas, Bailey's mate, was a hard-charging lineman and a great defensive ace. At guard Worth was a hard man to beat while Hudson and Hill, alternating at the other post, were constant threats to their opponents. Cox, the pivot man, was one of the most valuable men in the line. He was in every play, smearing the runner or blocking the kicker. In the backfield, Kametches, the quarter, was a heady . Q-.-se. -- - 2 -.-.,Q..-.T -3-:ie -1-, . Y- ,- . Q 0 Q of. ,' I I! QGDQO 0 695 i 1 man and a good ball-carrier. Womble was probably the best all-round backiield man. His ability to pass, re- ceive passes, punting and running gave him this dis- tinction. Dunaway .was a fast back and was an excellent broken field runner at the other half. Sammy Paul was also a fast man and a heads up player while Scales was a good defensive back. At fullback Captain-elect Grady Ferrel performed like a college gridster on the offense as well as the defense. When she caught us in the hall, As we gave one loud bawl, Our tones soon turned to moans. There was a young man named Dunaway, Who showed great speed in the getaway. Along came Dot Sawyer, Lass of a lawyer. And stole young Bill's heart away. An excellent instructor was Miss Barden, Who declared our heads were too hardened To admit any Latin, Spoken or written, And thaf'our ignorance was without pardon. There was a young lad called Peavine, Who dribbled the ball down the line, Making scores in the game And getting the name Of heartbreaker at the same time. There was a young teacher, Alexander, Who taught our fingers to meander Swiftly over keys. From A's to Z's, And to write letters from here to yonder. Young Myatt answered to Williamg He was one boy in a million. He could reach a basketball goal On a twelve foot pole, And make the score one billion. From Mr. Wessinger's very own lips We learned business arith wa.s a crip Till Miss Nellie McClees, By swift degrees, Showed us to pass we must fast trip. There was a young man named Bob For whom the girls would all sob, But this was a sad fateg They were all too late, For Mug only did his heart throb. Miss Gilmore was a young French rua'mselle With voice like a deep rich bellg But when our lessons we'd fail. She knew how to rail, And at ninth period sounded our knells.
