ULIVFA RAN EY LHBRARY 4016 Carya Drive NC 271619 Foreword EUAUSE of the standards given this sehool by the great edueator for whom it is named: beeanse of the repeated vio- tories of our sehool against obvious overwhelming oddsg because of the ideals for which the Class ot' 1930 stands, we have greatly enjoyed eolleeting and editing as mueh of the history and traditions of the sehool as we ean find space for. For our fellow classmates, we have tried, to the best of our ability, to portray tl1e phases of sehool life that will, in the years to come, keep our minds filled with the spirit of Hugh Morson High School. We hope that we have lived up to the honor that you have gracious- ly bestowed upon us. Of our friends and readers we have but one simple request: when they glanee through the pages of this book, let them not be eritiealg for we have done our bestg and if we have failed, the fault is in us and not in our efforts. Q A. 'A Thirty-CWD n ,v 4 . . fvpzf ' , gui n-. 'M Armin-v.'u n' fl., 1 -1' Class History ,HE class of 1930 was born in September, 1919. Cn this memorable day two hundred children entered the Raleigh public schools. They remained in these different schools for six years. In 1925 they came to the Junior High School on Morgan Street. The two years that they were there, they were not organized, but they met each other and added several new pupils. Chief among them was Emily Miller. who came to them from Shelby. In 1927 they came to Hugh Morson where they were then sophomores. .Xfter they became adjusted to being in high school, they decided to organize and elect their class officers. Thomas Jones was elected president. Except for the novelty of being in high school and for organizing the class, the sophomore year was uneventful. Juniors! I-Iow proud they were that they could call themselves by that name. Just as soon as the classes had become settled, Miss Creighton was elected class adviser. At once, with her usual efiiciency, she appointed a committee to order the class rings. Wliile the students were impatiently awaiting the arrival of the class rings, the following class officers were elected: Jimmy Newell, president, Claude Freeman, vice president, Billy Brown, secretary, and Elizabeth Webste1', treasurer. After the rings had arrived, the class began to think about raising money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. A play, Miss Mollyf, was given. Witli the money earned by the play and with some obtained from other places a banquet was -given at the Carolina Hotel in May. This was the first Junior-Senior Banquet to be given at a hotel. Everyone agreed that it was the best class banquet ever given. In 1929 everyone came to school proudly but rather sadly: proud to be seniors but sad to be sepa1'ated from classmates who were attending the new high school, After a month of impatient waiting, it was decided that each school would have an annual. An annual staff was elected at once. Albert L. Clmstead was chosen editor-in-chief, and Margaret Little, business manager. At the same time the following class officers were elected: Cornelius Brctsch, president, Claude Freenian, vice president, Virginia Cox, secretary, Cornelia Love, treasurer, Stewart Robert- son, testator, Susan Stoker, historian, Margaret Tilghman, poet, and Joe Sawyer, prophet. Miss Coffey was elected to assist Miss Creighton and the aimual staff. Many things were done to raise money for THE OAIQ LEAF, among these was the presentation of a play, A Corner of the Campus, and the Senior Circus. The whole school gave hearty cooperation in making the circus a success. This is a very abridged history of the Class of 1930. Although this class has made a very enviable record, it is only a glimpse of the things it foretells. And now we must step out, one and all, into the school of life, realizing that our work is Not finished, just begun. SUSAN STOKER. Thirty-three The Last Will and Testament PON behalf of my client, the Class of 1930 of Hugh Morson High School, of the city of Raleigh, State of North Carolina, U. S. A., I have called you together upon this serious and solemn occasion, to listen to her last will and testament and to receive from her dying hand the few gifts that she has to bestow in her last moments. We, the Senior Class, being of simple mind, but considering the uncertainty of the days we have to tell others what we think of them, do make and declare this our last will and testament, revoking and making void all former wills or promises. ITEM I To Mr. Srygley, our superintendent, to Mr. VVessinger, our principal, and to our faculty we leave our deep and sincere thanks for their untiring efforts and undivided interest in aiding us to reach our present enviable positions. ITEM II To our school as a whole, we bequeath the new constitution that the Constitution Committee of the Student Cooperative Association has drawn up. May you use this constitution for the betterment of your school and yourself. ITEM III To the Junior Class we will our senior privileges fwith a magnifying glass to find themj and everything else that we lcft in our hurry to receive our diplomas. ITEM IV To the Sophomore Class, as a student body, we give and bequeath Susan Stoker's knowledge of economics, philosophy, art, science, and the universe in whole or in part. ITEM V To the Freshman Class we leave this motto, To be seen, and not heard. ITEM VI The following may seem but trifling bequests, but we hope they may be accepted, not as worthless things lavishly thrown away because we can no longer keep them, but as valuable assets to those who may receive them, and a continual reminder of the generosity of heart displayed in our fine and full bestowal: First. To the football team of next year, Albert Ol1l1StC2lCl7S and Barnes Worthls athletic ability. We could not induce Bill Dunaway to surrender his. Second. To Annie Louise Vlfilkerson, Elizabeth Gantt's musical gift. Tltircl. To George Riddle, Williaiii Scruggsls bluff to add to what he already possesses. Thirty-four Fourth. To Furman Betts, Cornelius Bretseh's knowledge of law. 'F1ifH1. To Williani Anderson, Thomas iACl2llllS,S height. Si.rH1. To anybody who needs it, Emily Mille1 s gift of gab. In witness thereof, We, the Class Of 1930, the testators, have to this, our will, set Our hands and seal. STENVART ROBERTSON, Tcstalor. Witiiesses : JOHN FINLATOR. JACK STONEBANKS. Nwf ha Thirty-five Class Prophecy T seems that my class had become rather boring. The teacher's seldom raised, seldom lowered voice was like a lullaby to me in my state of drowsiness. Un- conscious of my act, I had rested my head drearily upon my arm, and like one succumbing to the effects of ether, I gradually lost consciousness. But lol my thoughts soon returned, and I beheld the wonder of all wonders. I had been trans- ferred twenty years hence a11d was privileged to observe the future of many of my erstwhile classmates. In some unknown manner, I found myself walking down a prominent street of the city. Everything was changed. The first thing to catch my eye was an enormous billboard. In large letters ac1'oss its top were f'Hudson and WOl'fl1 Five Ring Circus. Also, on this board were caricatures of Thomas Adams, The Human Stilt Walker, and Doane Kemp, The Nation's Most Popular Clown. Wliile I was gazing at this board, who should chance to come along but Wiliiia Branch and Kathleen Johnson? I was overjoyed at seeing them after so many years. They seemed ve1'y enthusiastic over the fact that they were running a kinder-garten. Leaving them, I soon met Gertrude Mitchener, the beauty parlor operator. Engaging in lengthly conversation with her, I learned that several of our classmates were doing educational work. She informed me that Inez Patterson and Mildred Perry were teaching in Goldsboro High School, and lately they had been doing much research work, securing all of their material from Cornelia Love and Virginia Mann, associate librarians of the Congressional Library. Other members of our class were filling positions in the institutions of the state. James Liles was pro- fessor of mathematics at Wake Forest and had advanced a new light on the fourth dimension. He was assisted by Donald Kimrey. Violet McKelvey and Margaret Little were educating boys and girls at Cary High School. Violet was principal, and Margaret was truant oflicer. I continued my rambles throughout the city and from various sources learned the following: in the State oflices of North Carolina Dalmcy Gettel was Commissioner of Revenue. His secretary was Ethel Holt, and the staff members were as follows: Ethel Bennett, Lenora Broekwell, Elizabeth Allen, Helen Frazelle, and Catherine Harrington. In the Department of Education Lyle Hofmeister was Superintendent of Public Instruction, and his secretary was Aridella Jordan. The Commissioner of Agriculture was Charles Horton whose knowledge of rural life was helping him immensely. Mildred Pittman and Stewart Robertson were editing The Raleigh Times and were supporting Thomas Bailey for President of the United States. They were also featuring revolutionary news from Mexico, and their latest story stated that Bill Dunaway had elected himself President of Mexico. Assisting him in this revolu- tion were: his wife, Naomi Sharpe, Ivey Gattisg Daniel Rudy, Alex Goodman. Their Mexican column also stated that Evelyn McNair was living in Mexico. Thirty-six Genevieve Rozar was painting cover pages for leading magazines, and her chief models were Jack Stonebanks and Mildred Womble. She was also art director for the studio in which were th1'ee movie stars, namely, Dorothy Sawyer, Reginald Moore, and James Nowell. In this same studio, Albert Olmstead was director of all athletic pictures. On the night previous there had been a hop given at West Point. James Porter, dancing master, gazed with pride as his pupils glided gracefully across the polished floor. Music for the dance was furnished by John Finlatoris orchestra. lt was composed entirely of Hugh M0l'SO11 Alumni: Edgar Hall, Claude Freeman, Maurice Thiem, Thomas Bost, James Bynum, and Bill Scruggs. Big happenin-gs were scheduled for the following day in Chapel Hill. Virginia Cox was giving a party at her home in honor of Pauline Britt who was visiting her. Others present were: Dorothy Utley, Margaret Wade, Mabel Sargeant, Eleanor Rozar, Louise Hinton, Doris Eogleman, Elizabeth Edgerton, Cornelius Bretsch, and Bill Finlator. It was North Carolina Home Coming Day, and visitors to the old Hugh Morson were Susan Stoker, Margaret Tilghman, Elise Hedrick, Eloise Shearin, and Elizabeth and Marguerite Colwell. Susan and Margaret were writing theme songs in Hollywood. Elise and Eloise were featuring a style shop in New York, and Elizabeth and Marguerite were growing rich operating a bus line from coast to coast. Caroline Ga1'rison, Marion Vinson, Edith Wells, Ida Yates, Margaret McDade, Eva Glass, and Mary Echerd were appearing in a vitaphone chorus as the Gamison Sisters. In the same vaudeville bill Gladys Bundy featured with her violin solos. At one time something happened to the picture mechanism, and the lapse during its repairing would have been boring had it not been for Josephine Iiaster's organ recital. At a meeting of the Raleigh Y. W. C. A. the officers for the coming year were elected as follows: physical director, Emily Miller, general secretary, Julia Smith, and the board of directors were Betty Weaver, Estelle Hardee, Martha Woodall, Kate Pegram, Dorothea Parker, and Norma Morgan. At this meeting Inez Cop- pedge related her travels in Porto Rico. Velma Patterson had married and moved to New York, and the famous man- nequin Evelyn Riggan was sharing her apartment. The interior decoration of this apartment was most ingeniously done by Mary Frances Barnes who had at- tracted much attention due to her ability in this line. Visiting them were two missionaries, Mary Harvey Love and Frances Craddock. It seemed that I had been foretold the future of all my classmates when I was awakened by a loud laugh from Hubert Rand. My senses gradually returned, and with a yawn or two I discovered myself back in class. Hubert laughed too soon, for his future had not yet been foretold. Joi: SAXVYER. They used the plan authorized by the University of North Carolina in which the team with the best percentage of Class A. High Schools in Eastern North Carolina would play the team with the same qualifications in Western North Carolina. Although the Raleigh team did not go very far in the way of a high standing among the leaders, it had the satisfaction of beating the Wildcats of Wilmington for the first time in three years. The two Wildcat victories over Raleigh in the last two years eliminated the team from participating against a Western eleven at Chapel Hill. The local's victory over Wilmington was responsible for the second meeting of the Wildcats and Goldsboro, in which the latter won 13-2. Raleigh won the Wilmington game, due to its ability to stop Wildcat threats and the brilliant wa'y in which the whole team played. The winning score came 011 a pass. Bailey to Paris, and the extra point was added by the air route, Bailey to Dunnaway. The victory was especially pleasing to Bailey and Paris who were the only veterans back from the '28 team. Raleigh played four games in the championship series, and the win over Wilmington was the only victory rung up. In the first game Raleigh journeyed to Fayetteville and lost a two touchdown decision. The second was a tilt with the boys from the seaport town, and the third battle was with the Durham Bulls. The Bulls eked out a touchdown in the first two minutes of play. but both teams played on even terms the remainder of the game. In the final game of the championship series, Goldsboro was host to the Raleigh team. Due to the rain throughout the game, both teams were handicapped by the cold weather. The Earthquakes won by a lone touchdown over the Visitors, but it was anybody's game. This left the Raleighites with .250 percentage mark as a result of a single win in four starts. In the regular season play, not including the championship series, the locals won two contests and tied another. The Raleigh Highs opened their 1929 season grid play by chalking up a 28-0 score over Nashville. Dunaway was the star of the game by his su- perb running, which netted him three touchdowns. The second opponent for the Highs was with Smithfield at the Johnston County Capital. The count at the end of this game was deadlocked at 7 all. At Riddick field the following week, Raleigh was matched with Bladenboro. The locals ran wildg and when the final whistle had blown, they were on the big end of a 39-12 score. Cox and McLeod starred in the line with Dunaway and Womble featuring in the backfield. There were no more games after this encounter, except the ones of championship bearing. It would be a difficult problem to pick out the stars of the team, for there were manyg each regular should get credit for his cooperation in the team's play. Starting at ends, Paris, Blackwood, and Reaves were excellent in smearing opponents' plays. Then McLeod and Haynes handled their assignments well at the tackle posts with Jack Cleveland shar- ing honors as an able sub. Worth Olmstead and Hudson were thorns in the' side of op- posing teams. Although small in stature, they played beautifully at their guard position. Nero Cox at center provided many thrills for Raleigh fans by intercepting several passes through his long arms as well as by being an able tackler. Dunaway was a brilliant open field runner and performed his duties well at the quarterback post. Womble and Ferrell were shining lights in both the defensive and offensive play. Womble was noted particularly for his line bucking and Ferrell for his hard tackling. Morgan played fine as a sub and as a regular. Captain-elect Bailey put up a. whale of a game at the fullback post and showed up fine in the offensive as well as the defensive play. G RADY FERRELL R Sixty-three Basketball THE Raleigh Highs had another successful basketball season although they were eliminated by Durham for the Eastern Class A Championship. The basketball season was conducted on the same basis as the football season. The team with the best per- centage was declared the Eastern champion. Raleigh and Durham had won live games each and lost none before the deciding contest. The Bulls defeated the Highs 20-12. The locals opened the championship series by playing at Wilson and they took the measure of the Charles L. Coon High School by a 33-17 count. In the second game of the Eastern schedule, the Highs played the Earthquakes of Goldsboro, at Raleigh, and literally ran wild, smothering the Quakes to the tune of a 65-8' score. The next game for the Raleighites was with Rocky Mount at the Capital City. The Raleigh boys won in a close game, 37-28. This game was played on Tuesday, and the following Saturday Raleigh went to Wilmington and won over the Wildcats, 30-21. At Raleigh, the next week, Fayetteville lost to Raleigh by a 40-25 score, after playing them on even terms for the first half. Then, the Durham game concluded the season's play. Raleigh made a very impressive showing in the games with no championship bearing. The Highs opened regular season play by swamping Clayton 52-5 on the Clayton Court. Trip Rand led the offensive attack by ringing up 23 points. Raleigh then journeyed to Wake Forest and lost a close verdict to Wake Forest Freshmen 18-16. The lead changed several times only to have the Baby Deacons nose out a victory in the last two minutes of play. Several weeks later the locals took a trip into Western North Carolina and played two games, winning both of them. The first game was with Lenoir-Rhyne Freshmen. The Highs launched a brilliant last quarter rally to turn back the Rhyners, 30-25. The linal game found Hickory as the opponents for the Raleigh team. Statesville had won 13 out of 14 starts, previous to the Raleigh game. However they struck a snag, and the visitors' beautiful offense was too much for the Western team, the final score being 46-20 in favor of Raleigh. After returning to Raleigh the locals met three teams in the championship series before meeting another opponent with no championship bearing. Trenton was the iinal team to play the Raleigh Highs before the Durham game. This team had already hung up a very impressive showing. winning 18 out of 20 contests. They were expected to give the locals a stiff fight. However, the Rand and Womble combination ran wild to defeat the Trentonites 44-13. The team had no particular star. Everybody performed in fine style in the offensive and defensive play of the Highs. Captain Trip Rand was the most outstanding man on the offense. Rand was high scorer for the season and chalked up' many two pointers. He averaged 15 points a game for the first five contests of the Eastern championship. Rand received able assistance from Chub Womble, his running mate. Womble's passing was responsible for many counters made by Rand and he contributed some fine defensive play. Cox, center, proved an excellent pivot man and he cut down many threats of opposing teams by his fine work on the defense. Arnold Jacobs, guard, proved to be the best on the defense. Although rather small in stature, Jacobs with his close guarding was always helpful in holding the opponents' score down. Grimes Hanna and Robert Austin alternated at the other guard position. Hanna's floor work was fine and Austin played several good games during the season. Just a word about the second team. The Reserves deserve credit for their work in relieving the Regulars. Whenever Raleigh piled up a big score, they were sent in and they generally played a fine game. What I like about it is that I don't hear many wise not much. Of course, everyone knows who I amg for on my arrival at cracks- school I am greeted with Hi Minnie, or Hey Slim. Oh what a world of fun I have in large crowds. A lot of service other folks receive from meg for in a mob I push my Way through, and thousands may come after me. Of course I attract much attention, for I am the largest thing in school. When I consider how my fat is spent, I often wonder if it is spent wisely. I use it to the best advantage at all times, for instance, in foot- ball I keep the benches warmg in basketball, I help protect the public, in track, I will pack the groundg in baseball, I will be the backstop. In case you do not know who this isg it is James Bryant Liles, Esq. Q! 93.92 On Being Tall HINK of the thrill of being tall, standing head and shoulders above everyone else. What I like about being tall is that I don't hear many wise cracks -not many. The usual greetings one receives from the insignificant runts are: How is the weather up there? How in the world did you get to be so tall? Do you think it will rain today? A frequent and very dumb one is Where do you get clothes to tit you? The only sensible answer to this one is, I 'buy them. All of these wise cracks are so old they are staleg and when they are heard, go in one ear and out the other. It is a pity some of the runts don't use the intelligence to make up some new ones. If anyone will notice closely the next time he sees a fellow small of stature, he will see that he tries to hold his head up in order to look taller and attract attention. Then notice a tall fellow, he walks with ease and attracts as much attention as the small one. We may have fun made of us, We may be snooted, raz-berriedf' but the time we get revenge is whenever there is a wreck, fight, or any other type of free entertainment. A tall fellow can look on with ease. The little one is down under, not able to see, and is blowing and puffing for air. ' There is an old saying The bigger they are, the heavier they fall -but pray help the little fellow he falls on. 0 THOMAS ADAMS. Seventy-six AUTOGRAPHS New -R I 4 1 4 el Q J I 1 Q Q 'x ' , ..
