'L W 1.15.0 Class Poem On the outskirts of these school days 'Twixt what has been and what shall be, Here we stand-the mighty Seniors, Knowing not the Future's riddle. To our school We whisper Farewell, To O111' friends We murmur parting, 7 Then we'll step into the future, Step with courage, all defeating, For by worthy Word and action Victory comes with every meeting. At the door from past to future, Pause we only for a moment- Pause to cast a glance behind us, Ere the days are gone forever. Back our thoughts fly to the starting, To the Freshman, Soph, and Junior, To the Senior year of high school, And we half regret departing. Wish we might step back a little, But no, no, the door is closing- We are pushed into the Future- Let us gotwith lofty courage, Ready for the work before us. LULA BELLE HIGHSMITH, E Class Poet. Wit is the unexpected explosion of thought. PAVLINE COUNCIL Not too sober: not too gay, But a true blue girl in every way. History OST class histories are alike, but the history of the class of 1929 is somewhat different from all the rest. Now, as we stand on the plateau of our high school career, we shall pause for a few minutes and look back over our four years of high school life. The road has not been easy, for at times the hill has been very steep, and it took persistence to keep climbing. But with one resolve in our minds - to strive, to seek, to find, and 11ot to yield -we have finally overcome our dif- ficulties Ellltl reached that coveted position of Seniors. Our Freshman year in high school began over at the old Raleigh High School. The class was not organized then and had no class officers or adviser. There were no class meetings, in fact, our Freshman year was in chaos. We began as nearly every Freshman class does- green'7-but we were willing to try. Of course, it took us several days to get used to the class system, but we finally managed to get to our classes on time. Mid-term examinations came, and after that awful week we found that we had passed our first milepost. The spring term proved to be an uneventful one. VVe had gotten down to real study by that time and were ready for the exams when they came. Imagine our delight when we found that we had passed our Freshman work and were Sophomores. As soon as the fall term started, the Sophomore class called a meeting to elect oflicers and an adviser. The ofiicers elected were: President, James Kurfeesg Vice President, Hubert Crow, Secretary, Turner Bilisoly, Treasurer, Nancy Knott, Critic, Wallace King. We were very fortunate in getting as our adviser Mrs. VV. A. Couch, who has proved to be our greatest friend during all of our high school career. VVith such an untiring and helpful adviser we were led through the first half' of our Sophomore year. In the spring we decided that we Sophomores would have a party, and a party we did give. It went off fine. Every one had a grand time. It was a business meeting as well as a social one, and the officers for our Junior year were elected. Charles Poe was elected President, Margaret Briggs, Vice President, Frances Maynard, Secretary, Jack Barefoot, Treasurer, and Wallace King, Critic. Juniors! Who doesnit aspire to be one? And we, the class of ,29, were Juniors. With chests slightly expanded and that know-it-all air we walked around the Forty-nine school as though we thought we were the entire school. But our new positions didn't make us so conceited that we forgot to get down to real work. Early in the fall we held a meeting and discussed ways of raising money for the approaching Junior-Senior banquet. lVe raised the necessary funds by having rummage sales, candy and cake sales, and giving an entertainment. Who doesn't remember The Junior Frolicsn and Spark Plugsv? We actually caused those dignified Seniors to exclaim among themselves, My, but those Juniors are clever! They make a suc- cess of everything they attempt. The greatest of Junior affairs came before we knew it-the Junior-Senior banquet. Wl'1at a time we did have! Every one had the time of his life, and even the Seniors exclaimed how nice everything was. After the banquet we put our minds back on our books, for exams were drawing near. Then our Junior year was over, and we were prepared for the last and most eventful year in our high school career. The glory of being Seniors! We had to pinch ourselves to see if we were really awake. To be regarded by the teachers as important was really astounding. Think we didn't use our Senior privileges! The Senior class oflicers were: President, Banks Young, Vice President, Mary Dwight Turner, Secretary, Agnes Moore, T1'6E1Sll1'91', Agnes Tucker, Editor-in-Chief of Annual, Agnes Covington, Business Manager, Jack Bagby, Associate Edito1's, VVallace King and Mary Wa1'i11g, His- torian, Nancy Knott, Class Prophet, Hazel McDonald, Testator, Eugene Spivey, Joke Editor, Laura Wliiteg Art Editors, Robert Ruffner, Margie Rose Butfaloe, and Annie Joe Wa1'e. Work on the Animal was begun at once. Money was raised by giving a musical play, Cynthia's Strategy, and a carnival. We also had a Tag Day, and sold tags. Wlieii the Senior Superlatives were elected, there was a hum of excitement everywhere, And ol1, those pictures for the Annual! The next happening of interest was the election of May Queen. After many interrup- tions, Annie Joe Wa1'e was elected May Queen and Nancy Knott, Attendant. When the Animal goes to press March 1, there will be nothing to do but make the most of our Senior privileges, pass our exams, and receive those long worked-for and coveted prizes, our diplomas. NANCY KNOTT, Historian. Fifty Class Prophec S I passed through the tall, majestic portals of the Hall of Mirrors, I wondered whom of my old classmates I should see. It had been eleven years since I had been graduated from Hugh Morson High, and I had a consuming desire to learn the whereabouts of my former classmates. And so I had come to this awesome place, of which I had heard so much, to learn how their lives had turned out. Perhaps you who are reading this will wonder how I could find out all about my classmates just bv going into a. building. But you may recall that I was entering the Hall of Mirrors. In this building there were many, many mirrors arranged in a spacious room. These mirrors had magical powers-one could look into each o11e of the mirrors and there would be pictured any of one's friends in his present life work. This was truly a wonderful invention. This room was, as I said, very large. All four walls were completely covered by mirro1's in which I could see various activities. The fioor was fixed in beautifully designed tiles. We stopped before the first mirror. I perceived James Kurfees seated at a desk. He seemed to be in deep thought. That, my guide informed me, is the greatest physician of the South! He was graduated from the University of North Carolina with the highest honors. I then recollected that James had once expressed his intention to specialize in medicine at Chapel Hill. In a second mirror I saw Mary VVaring, who had become head of the Raleigh Girl Reserves-her highest ambition realized! In that same mirro-r I saw Mary's secretary, Agnes Moore. Another mirror portrayed Banks Young, who was president of N. C. State College. His secretary was Lucy Cobbg while his assistant was Frances Maynard. Four of the teachers out at the college were: Mary Dwight Turner, Janet Gray, Evelyn Thomas, and Sallie Council. In the fourth mirror I discovered Annie Joe IVare, beautiful hostess of the WValdorf Night Club, of New York. Her business manager was George Ball. I learned that there was an increasing demand for her popular song-hits. She was acclaimed a second Lee Morse. Dorothy McGee came next. She was operating a small dope-shop on the campus of State College. Across the way Louise Kennedy's dope-shop furnished interesting competition. Agnes Covington, once editor of our high school annual, seemed to be bearing up wonderfully under the job of being editor-in-chief of Cuuin-ytonfs Sunbelzm, the most recent newspaper in Raleigh. Dorothy Merritt and VVilfred Boney were reporters on her staff, while Charles Heck was private detective for the concern. In another mirror I saw Robert Ruftner, the most popular cartoonist of the day. Assisting him was Josephine Snell, also noted for her talent in this line. Eugene Spivey was busily directing his newest play, One Woman's Way. Lula Belle Highsmith had become the great American poet. In another mirror I perceived Agnes Tucker, who had taken over Miss C'o'nn0r's geometry class at the Hugh Morson High School. Robert Covington was basketball coach thereg while Jack Barefoot was the football coach. XVilmer Barnes taught French and English. The principal was Charles Poe and the student adviser Eleanor Kennedy. Charlotte Houston was directing the orchestra, Earl VVilliams had taken Mr. Potter's place, and Nancy VVatson was teaching Miss Partenheimer's music classes. In still another mirror there was portrayed a small and exclusive modiste shop. I discovered that Arabel Cox, after spending several seasons in Paris, had returned to our city to create for Raleigh women apparel rivaling that of Lucielle. Elise Partin and Charlotte Penny were owners of the most popular oneering circus of the season. Dorothea Parker, Hilda Evans, and Helen Britt were tight-rope walkers in the show. Nannie Mae Sullivan was the head midget. VVilliam Pate was the chief clowng while Rosa Caine Nottingham had charge of the hyenas. Burdette Mayne was the lion tamer. He also had charge of the monkeys and elephants. Next I discovered that Grace Sale and Mary Louise Johnson owned a small public library in Raleigh. Fifty-one Catherine Harding had become an opera star in Paris. She was of great renowng her stage name was Mlle. Lavalle. Elizabeth Weathers was student adviser at Apex High School. At the same time Irving Margulies taught German, Robert Berryman was the boys' basketball coach, and Margaret Nichols the girls'. The next view showed me a platform built at one end of Fayetteville St1'eet. A boxing match was in progress. The combatants were Arthur Wilson, heavy-weight champion of America, and Jack Bagby, who had a consuming desire for Arthur's title. The referee was Allen Rogers. Pat Abernethy had charge of public physical education in Greensboro. Her assistant was Drexel Layton. Laura NVhite, I learned, was the famous oratcr over whom the country had suddenly gone wild. She lectured from morning to night. Katherine Thiem had opened a foundling home for stray dogs and cats. Her veterinarian was Luther Yost. His assistant was Arthur Rogers. VVallace King had turned out, as we all thought he would, to be the greatest pianist in the world. H9 was then on tour in Russia. In another mirror I saw VVesley Wallace, speed king of America. He was then competing in an automo- bile race in New Jersey. Margaret B1'iggs and Charlotte Fitzsimrnons, I found, were partners in the law business. Naturally the business was very prosperous-they handled only divorces. Margaret Foster was their stenographer. Neal Paris was a real estate agent. He could sell more lots in a day than any other company sold in a week. Next I discovered that Mary Crow was running an attractive little kindergarten in Cary, while her brother, Hubert, owned a hunting lodge up in the Adirondacks. Last of all I saw Louise Bridges, who had taken Louise Brooks' place on the screen. I noticed that dusk was falling outside, so after deciding to return some other day, I left the Hall of Mirrors, well satistied with the 1'esults of my visit. HAZEL MCDONALD, Prophet. X! First of all, the football squad of Hugh Morson High School has had two of the best coaches any- where in the South, Mr. Albert T. Spurlock, who has played football in several of the leading colleges in the country, and Mr. J. Peele Johnson, who has been coach- ing all athletics in the high school for about four years. These coaches labored hard with their players during practice, and the results were Sl1ONVll when the teams went into action. The next thing to consider is their success is the way the squad worked togethe1'. During the games the whole team ran as smoothly as a well-oiled machine. Several leading newspapers throughout the State have commented on the way the team co- operated-in fact, the back field soon acquired the name of The Four Horsemen. The Purple Terrors have won ten out of twelve games, tied one, and lost one. This is the best record that has bPQl ll school in many years. The Purple Terrorsl' won every game they played this year except two, and they tied one of those with Durham, but, through hard playing, Wilmington beat them for the eastern championship. Let us pause here for a second to summarize the games and results of '4The Purple Tcrrors for the season of 1928: PRE-CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES Raleigh. It entered both the Championship Series, sponsored by the University of North Carolina, and the Invitational Tournament, sponsored by North Carolina State College. In the first series of contests the Whirlwind reached the Eastern Finals, but lost when the Old Jinx bobbed up again. In the Tournament, however, the boys were more fortunate. After playing four great games, the Quint was declared the Winner of Class A for the third consecutive year. The entire school is proud of its players and hates to see them leave. Three of the boys have played three years and are nlow preparing to enter College. These players are Alle11 Nelms, Charlie Roberts, and Moody Smith. The school wishes them even more success in the coming years. Now, for a word about each player. At center there is Willie Duke, who has played basketball only one year. During this time he has won much fame. He has out-jumped centers as high as six feet three inches. Willie can always be seen on the court, full of pep and ready to serve his team. Then there is Charlie Roberts, captain, who always does his part, and has led his team to many victories. In many games Allen Nelms, right guard, has been high-score man. He can be seen in all the games, dribbling the ball down to the opponents goal and ringing many baskets. It is very probable that Allen will rate an All-State berth. Next in line, is Moody Smith, left forward. O11 account of injuries, Moody was out of the games in the first part of the season, but he has been in all the Hnal games. Moody always plays a remarkable offensive game. Last, there is Hubert Rand, who came from Garner. Hubert was a basketball hero in Garner, and he has retained his standing since he has been with the Jackrabbits. The most prominent substitute on the team is Allen Rogers, who played well in any position. Other prominent Substitutes: Charles Poe, Buck Harris, George Ball, Neal Paris, and Nero Cox. The famous Mr. NVessinger-no less- Came down and talked, and mcnuy wurds were spokn To telle them how to gette that marvlous Tokenne, Diploma, and how Graduation's founde. The guide spoke thus to thenig they gathered round: If you woode reech our grayte and reverend saynte, Thenne you must ever avoid the use of ain't. In chapel, laughe at ye speeker's every joke, E'en though you wishe sincerely hc woode choke. Remember Miss Eliza's word is law. Avoid the Jeter-he hath a sharpened clawe. Those things remember, and you'll gette there kwick, Provided on this laste you do not stick: Each yeare each of you shall take subjects four- Or if he is ambishus, may take more- This will bring units numbering sixteen- Enough to lead you to the saynte, I Ween. Little Agnes -or Monkey, as she is knowne- Has been so hisy that she has notte growne, Butte such a lotte of diligence has she That her work equals that of people three. tSo does her talking.-Editor-'s notej iVhen Mr. XVessinger gave such good advice, Some took. his words to harte. and so, at last, Most Sllldl0l1S of alle the classe, we see Mary Dwight Turner, and also XVilmer B. The beste sporte in the classe is jollie Pat, Fulle loveable is sheg and though she's fat, Always in basketball she is a starre, She's Morson president, and a goode G. R. In this gra-yte classe there are more thanne a few Whose .Witte is grayter thanne that of me or you- Bcb Biggs, Fat, Arthur, Robert Berryman Do always act as funny as they canne.
