By some strange magic, the juniorsenior prom was held in the midst of some enchanted dream. With grass skirts swinging to the na- tive beats, hula girls completed the illusion. Just beyond the straw huts and palm trees, the performing band Zoom invited formal ly-attired guests to their feet. Yet this evening of fantasy was not complete with- out crowning Brad Allen prom king and Robyn Oakley prom queen. 1 Greased Lightning! Lei your Hngers do the walking. This is true of our school board, superintendent, and staff They have served us well for a number of years. Our top administrators continue each year to actively seek excellence in all of the schools in our system. They are eager to help whenever and wherever they are needed. A school system with- out top-quality leadership is doomed to mediocrity. We are quite fortunate that we do not fall into this category. ff! l I Dr. James E. When we returned to CHS from the summer vacation, most of us were pleasantly stunned to see Dr. Helen LeGette, former guidance counselon occupying the assistant principal's ofhce. It was now her job to oversee the bus routes, lunch lines, text- books and supplies, and various other tasks. lt has been a very good year for us because we still have Dr. LeGette with us. She changed jobs, but she is still loved by all as a firm yet gentle friend. Dr. LeGette tinally gets a chance to sit down. CHS Secretaries ive. Ecttor 's Letter As editor this year, l really enjoyed all of the responsibil ities and decisions that came with the title. I would be re- miss if l did not first of all thank the members of the annu- al staff-in particular Mindy Huffstetler, next year's editor-and my parents. They constantly supported me and helped as much as possible. There are many other people l need to thank. Follow- ing are those who contributed significantly to the publica- tion of our annual: Dale Epperly who designed the cover and also did much of the art work. The seal on the cover was originally designed by Dale 's brother, Wayne, a CHS graduate, who also made the suggestion that Cummings' Mascot be the Cavalier. Others are Judy Pike and Zonna Warren who designed the division pages showing the Cavalier moving until he reaches the highest point,' Tracy Jeffries and Tressie Springfield who gave their time in help- ing to put the book together although they were not members of the staff' Eddie Huffman and Steve Blalock who contributed some pictures to the classes and student life sections: Mr. Rick Campbell, photographer, The Burlington Daily Times-Ne ws, and Mr. Jim Morgan-all con- tributed photographsf Mrs. Helen Paschal and Kenneth Brown who contributed needed copy,' Mrs. Helen Mason who supported and cooperated with us far beyond the call of duty,' Mrs. Pat Mclntyre who spent much time help- ing us get the needed materials, and Donna Hooper who did most of the typing of our book. l would also like to thank the entire CHS faculty and ad ministrafion,' lnterCollegiate Press who published our book and their representative, Mr. Robert Lawson: and finally our advisors Mrs. Stout and Mrs. Evans. Without the contributions of all of the people l have mentioned and many others, it would not have been pos- sible to publish another successful edition of Nulli Secun- dus. l hope you will cherish this yearbook for many years to come. C. Cheek Varsity Footbal '80 The Cavalier football team was coming off a Conference championship in 1979, but looked to a rebuilding year in 1980 with the advent of a new head coach and three new assistants and the loss of 14 starters. Coach Bob Hanna's Cavaliers returned only three offensive starters in Mark Gant, Mid5tate Player of the Year in 1979 at tailback, and Willie Gray at fullback. The big question mark would be a young offensive line led by returning starter Richard Hawn. Defensively five starters returned led by middle guard B. C. Cheek and defensive tackle Elrado Morgan. Also returning were Richard Jarosz and Joe Martin in the secondary, along with junior defensive end Garron Bradsher. So success in the early season depended upon how fast the young kids grew up. Then came the conference and the Cavs opened with a hard fought 2521 victory over Eastern Ran- dolph. They next went down to Mebane and lost a heartbreaker to Eastern Alamance 6 12 in overtime. The following week, Williams High School dominated the Cavs 0-30, and the Cavs stared at a disastrous season being 1-4 and looking at 5 tough conference op- ponents to come. The next 5 games started with Homecoming and a 42-0 beating of Bartlett Yancey giv- ing the young Cavs a great deal of needed conference. This was followed by a 12-3 beating of Southern Alamance. The young Cavs had grown up beating Graham 14-0. They were now looking at a possible 6-4 season, only the third winning season in the school's young history. The last two games were hard fought defensive struggles but the Cavs prevailed with a 10-7 victory over Western Alamance and a 7-0 victory over Hillsborough Orange. ln the last 5 games the Cavs had only given up 10 points and had moved the ball with enough consistency to post 5 victories and end up 64 which placed them third in the conference.
