The long summer days were being swept away by the cool autumn wind that moved in the night whis- pering quietly to me, “The easy time is gone and September is here.” And the green turned gold and red and brown, and I, too, changed as the coolness turned cold. Winter caught me unaware and taught me to search for more than warmth or an end to hunger, and | remembered summer days like a faded photograph in a dusty album. The long winter nights crept slug- gishly toward spring, and spring was hope, a spot of green in a field of brown, a touch of a smile in this place of tears. Spring warmed the blood of even the rocks, and the days were stretched and warmed like skin in the sun: Heat, wind, snowflake, night and the cycle was complete; the merry-go-round of season whined like words from a poet long dead and now revived, stopping. briefly to be heard and then moving into the night on a soft summer breeze when | am alive and searching: We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first - time. alon wu, TEMA not knowing where we were going. ie, phantttest iF aoee gia With new eyes we saw we were being led into the future. | Suddenly we felt the waves of change. — — = = OS SSSSSSSSS== = == ———— — SSS ——_—_————— SSS = = = === —= = = = = = ———S SEB h= EnBnh™ E™ ™B5S=SBNSSSSS| E Ss — = = SSS —— — SSae8 Se = SS ESBS ——— —— =e ——————- —$— ESS —S==x a —— SE eee ee : ESSER Sas —$SSSSSSS es ———————— ————— =—= Ht | I. jl | Y ———————_—SSSSSSSSSSZZZ= ——S— Se —_—_——SS==_ Sass == SSS = ————SSSS — a SSSSSSSSSSHHHSSSSSQ]EESES= SaaS === = SS | qh } i i | HN | | | WN MK i Ml) i, | | _ aS SF Poo and found ourselves together. We were born into predestination. The stage was set and the people were cast. We finally realized that we should be thankful for a chance. Be not sorrowful that the end is near, but be thankful that there was a beginning. . . . We remember the beginning, The Spring. , It starts early with—months of planning Fund raising—Themes— Decorations—Food— And then the reality hits you, It’s tonight! The Junior-Senior Prom. Your nerves go on edge and Your stomach gets heavy. You arrive—An what was is no more. The halls of learning are transformed. It’s like a dream world—and the Everyday people aren’t everyday, Not tonight! Then it is over And somehow you know that all the Work was worth it. And you had the “Embers” And a beautiful night to savor. 17 MY FAIR LADY On April 11, 12, and 13 the con- cert choir presented the hit Broadway Musical, “My Fair Lady”, at the Park Theater. The many hours of hard work, from January until April, proved to be worthwhile on opening night. Everyone reviewed the musical as being of superior qu ality and supported their feelings by filling the theater every night. Most of the credit for the suc- cess of “My Fair Lady” goes to the director, Mr. Tom Jenrette, who worked as hard, if not harder, than any of the cast. 19 BASEBALL 1972—THIS WAS OUR YEAR—CITY—COUNTY CHAMPIONS. Barry Smith—Most Valuable Player—City—County Tournament 1972. 20 eee 21 Graduation—1972 22 Somewhere in the building there are ghosts. They laugh, shake hands, clutch diplomas, and here and there they cry. Joy or sadness? Probably both. And if one listens close enough, he can still hear them shuffling out the gym door for the last time, as students: laugh- ing, clutching, crying. Where are those moments | threw away; moments growing to years and where am I? Music calls me back again and | am here seeking, listening, looking. And like a wave that returns persistantly on, those new ghosts return for one more year, life defying death, energy moving apathy. An old teacher stands in his door shaking his head and mumbling to no one in particular, “It’s just not fair, is it? | keep getting older and they stay the same.” Try to stop a wave. Try to stop a wave. Try to stop a wave. It will return, return. Accept it or drown: Ghosts come in waves. 23 PP meme” 25 To Complete the Beginning of the Year—Our First Football Game— Cummings vs Graham Monday was the start of a week’s excitement, Nothing but fun on schedule. A never ending display of childhood antics, A sucker to lick on and a hat to wear. The excitement showed in students’ faces As they witnessed a bonfire on a chilly Thursday night. Blue and Gold—our colors, our school, and our week. 28 29 HOMECOMING Although the night was cold, a homecoming spirit warmed the air. The stadium was filled with the sounds of happiness, Honoring our first homecoming complete with alumni. The excitement held out through the half- time activities centering around the crowning of the Queen. And the night was completed with the satisfaction of success. 30 Sophomore attendant, Beverly Hinshaw; Sophomore attendant, Linda Pinnix; escort, escort, Mike Allison Antonio Timmons Sophomore attendant, Shelia Boswell; es- Junior attendant, Lynn Walker; cort, Mark Clapp escort, Gary Parrish Junior attendant, Cathy Dixon; Junior attendant, Myra Walker; escort, Anthony Moore escort, Ronnie Wall 31 Senior attendant,Lynn Webster; Senior attendant, Elean Teel; escort, Chuck Parker escort, Harold James 1973 HOMECOMING QUEEN Miss Cindy Thompson Senior attendant, Cindy Thompson; Cindy Thompson was crowned Homecoming Queen during half-time ac- escort, Jimmy Scott tivities by her escort, Jimmy Scott. 32 RVI oe A win over Eastern set the pace for a homecoming dance following the game. Music by “Five Miles Out” provided the entertainment for which the Cavaliers celebrated their victory. A fitting end to a fulfilling day. 33 34 Team’s Getting Ready, The Spirit is Rising, Sports are an important part of any high school’s activities. Crawford As spokesman for the entire Annual Staff, | would like to take this opportunity to express a warm thank you to the people who have given their time to the ’73 edition of Nulli Secundus. We ex- tend our gratitude to Mrs. Stout on the business staff and Mrs. Evans on the layout staff. We would also like to thank Mr. Richard Smith and Lynn Chaney for the copy they contributed. To produce this annual took an immense amount of effort provided by the members of the staff. The work was made easier by the help of our yearbook representative, Mr. Dave Marshburn. Any annual’s worth is proved by the degree to which those who are included use it in future years to compare what they are with what they were. As the title to our annual suggests, we hope every member of Cummings can say that his achievements here were “second to none.” Kaye Norris Editor 194 Let me close my ears And shut my eyes to blindness; let smells vanish into a vacuum And touch be numb And taste neither bitter or sweet: give me time to think, remember what has been, leading unceasingly until now: What | have heard were people talking, laughing, and sometimes crying: all these were necessary. What | saw was a world which had to include me and all that | am. What | smelled were odors of life, only life, death will have to wait: all these were necessary. What | touched sometimes cut, Sometimes soothed, both hard and soft, both were there, both were necessary. What | tasted | shall taste. again, both the sour and the delicious: all of these have gone before me in my day, with me, for me, and | am not the person that | was or will be, for good or ill do not figure, do not matter to me now only knowing | am not the person that | was. opi Aw b op Hye wy) as me Ree Whe Lech gL eat RaROWI ng You thi 5 TRAE h e ve Aad alot of laughs sw gromeWy @ lass, Keep lip the hare Wtrk Lif s also Deer GE Oya AGV D Yous yp Gy re Lass.
