Whenever we needed advice he could be counted on to give us wise council and answers to our many questions. Mr. Marshburn is an outstanding assistant principal, yet his interest in students extends beyond the class- room. He has an innate ability to recognize the true potential of his students and an ultimate objective to en- courage their awareness and utilization of their talents. Div. 125 126 | cannot think but that the world would be better anid brighter if our teachers would dwell on the Duty of Happiness as well as the Happiness of neds ) — J. Lubbock | 127 Chemistry Class Psychology is the study of man’s per- sonality “What makes us tick’. What are the reasons we act the way we do? Nearly everyone has some mental problems or “hang-ups”. A good understanding of psychology helps us to get rid of these and to achieve emotional maturity, a good personality, and the ability to get along well with others, all of which makes for a happy, well-adjusted life. The Chemistry Class is designed for the college bound student, however it is open to any student who has completed successfully one year of Algebra. In this curricular one encounters problems of everyday life, including the production and understandings of common materials. The bleaching of clothes, the pro- duction of oxygen, and study of explosions are only a few of the topics covered in class. Included in this course are various laboratory exercises in which the student can actually make table salt he can eat, using hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, (Drano). Psychology Class French Class At Cummings, the Spanish Department gives the student the opportunity to study spanish through for five years. It offers the preparation for the college bound student who needs a foreign language. It also lets the student learn about the spanish speaking countries and how they live as well as as how they speak. WAS) The French Department of Cummings High School offers students the opportunity of study- ing French through the fifth level. In the French courses grammar and culture are combined with the objective of helping students to under- stand, speak, read and write French as well as to understand and appreciate the French people and their culture. Spanish Class oe namaste Geometry Class Driver's Education 130 Humanities Class Humanities is an interdisciplinary approach to education. It is an attempt for the student to see man in all the forces that shaped him into a living, thinking, feeling, individual. The courses center on history and literature, which correlates art, music, philosophy, sociology and science. Humanities | is a world cultures study; Humanities Il], American studies, and Humanities Ill focuses on the contemp orary scene. Drama Class 131 Hopefully there will be two semester courses offered in Drama. One will be a study of the drama as literature. It will cover this form from the beginning to the present. The other course will concentrate on theatre arts. Production tech- niques as well as acting will be studied with the goal being the production of a play for an assembly. Drama as a creative outlet is being viewed more and more as a necessary part of a total curriculum, and an appreciation of the theatre can enrich everyone's life. English courses offered at Cummings this year give the student the privilege to choose what he is most interested in and learn about that part- icular subject. English is no longer offered as a broad subject in which everything is taught in one year. Seniors are able to learn about one portion of English for one semester, then they change to another part of English in which they are interested. Courses offered are Advanced Com- position and Basic Composition, Short Story, Speech, Mass Media Survey, Myths and Legends, Creative Writing and the Novel. Myths and Legends Class Uy ee 132 Advanced Composition Class Typing Class W ; Te ICT Class Auto-Mechanics Class Carpentry Class D. E. Class Economics Class The study of the business life of our nation — our economy and how it functions. The course is introductory in nature and includes the principles essential to an understanding of fundamental economic problems and the policy alternatives society may utilize to contend with these problems. Consumership, investment, stock market, insurance, employment, mills, labor unions, banks and money make the frame- work for much of the course’s content. Family Life Class 134 This course is planned for both boys and girls at the upper high school level and is directed toward preparation for marriage and homemaking for those who have had little or no home economics. Instruction covers nutrition and preparation, care and selection of clothing, grooming and personal appearance, health and safety in the home, spend- ing the family income, family relationships and child development; preparation for marriage; es- tablishing and furnishing a home. Afro-American Afro-American is a one semester course designed to acquaint the students with the role in Negro American has played in the building and de- velopment of our nation. The black people's struggle for equality, in our democratic society, and the many contributions up to the present will be studied. Drafting Class Afro-American Class ay . if : re. 4 iam ' 2 way dn — Wy iA yi 135 Physical Education Class The primary purpose of the Physical Education Il program is to continue the program on a more complex level. Higher skill activities and more individual and team sports are offered. These activities are selected to give each individual an opportunity to develop physical skills, knowledge, and social value that may be used now and in later life. Sociology Class A study of man’s relationship to man in our complex’ society, and the role each must play in group living. Men living in a culture, both primi- tive and highly scientific are studied in relation to their institutions especially the home and family, religion, and community. Social and environment problems will be analyzed and some possible so- lutions discussed. 136 Biology Class In Biology at Cummings we strive to master certain fundamental biological concepts and then to allow the student to progress from these initial understandings to a study of living organisms. Finally, a study of the interrelationships of living things and their environmental adaptations should bring a clearer comprehension of the significance of life and its importance in human welfare. 137 Law Class This course, a comprehensive study of American laws, includes civil law, legal terminology, case studies, credit buying, laws governing marriage, di- vorce and parental responsibilities, welfare law, civil liberties, and laws regarding drugs and auto- mobiles. This course is designed to aid the students to live more fully in a complex society. Extensive utilization of community resources such as the Police Department, courts, city and county govern- ment officials, and local lawyers help to make this a beneficial course for the students. Lockamy Blalock A-1 Cleaners Din Awe EIIMNStOnes ts Biller’s Jewelers Television Company, Cable Vision | would like to thank personally each merchant and sponsor who contributed financially to the 1972 Nulli Secundus. Without your support, this book could not have been published. Since ours is a relatively new school in the area, it is especially gratifying to note the in- creased participation of the community in our project. We urge our readers to support the businesses advertised in this book. We also solicit everyone’s continued support for Cummings High School. On behalf of the entire business staff of the 1972 Nulli Secundus, | thank you again for the cooperation you gave us. Cindy Williams Business Manager 265 Preparation of the annual this year proved to be a tremendous challenge for the staff members. We began the year blindly unaware of the amount of work that is needed to produce a good annual. The key was working together as a team toward the goal of capturing the mood of Cummings High School, 1971-72. Many people whose names do not appear on these pages gave their time and, most of all, their interest in the spirit of ‘‘l care’, participating on both the business and layout staffs. Special recognition should be paid to Mr. Richard Smith, Mr. Tom Jenrette, Mrs. Aileene Richards, and Rita Long for their time and effort put into the annual towards making it a Success. But, without the student body of Cummings High School there would be no faces to fill the pages, no personalities to reflect, no fantasies to become reality. Hopefully you will enjoy this second volume of the Nulli Secundus and number it among your treasures as a book of the heart. ra.
