Thinking that basics are for second and third graders only is a big mistake. Kindergartners through Seniors benefit from learning them. If you haven’t noticed the change, then you must be a Freshman and have been hiding in your locker for the past eight months. On the other hand, maybe you are the epitome of a mathematician, historian, scientist, linguist or, of course, the perfect lady or gentleman, in which case you don’t need to learn the basics anyway. The method by which most teachers have brought back the “basics” has had quite an effect. Students no longer just receive a little sp above a misspelled word or wwc for wrong word choice; instead, the entire answer is wrong. Five or six of those little sp’s, plus another two or three wwc’s, added to a few incomplete sentences equals another flagged test. When basics are enforced, students study more, which in turn improves their grades. 4 Basic manners and respect are a must, as they should be. A smart mouth will gain nothing except a quick trip to the advisor’s office, or a prominent spot on a teacher’s black list. The “basics are here to stay and with good reason. Our vocabulary has been intentionally broadened, but there are still those basic words which can only be defined through the eyes of a student. They comprise a student’s “basic language which can never be taken away or corrected. To aid those who are bewildered by the speech of today’s Huffman students, the following glossary was created. It contains a list of defined terms used daily in the halls of Huffman High. It is not intended to be Webster's dictionary, nor was it written to be offensive. It is here simply to preserve those good ole “basics of our high school years. These two outstanding Seniors are chosen by the faculty to represent the ideal Huffman student. Their selection is based upon leadership, character, overall contributions to student welfare, and continuous scholastic achievement. These traits of impressiveness and intelligence are comparable to the ancient Vikings. The Warrior, a noble and majestic figure, is known for his unfailing stamina, courage, and superb character, thus enabling him to master the Norwegian seas. The Maiden was a dominant figure among the Nordic people because of her queenly statue. She was a perfect representation of fairness, purity, and beauty. With these qualities the Warrior and Maiden ruled the Scandinavian world. It is with great pleasure that the VALHALLA announces the 1981 Warrior and Maiden. Homecoming ’80-’81 Traditionally, Homecoming is one of the most exciting times in the school year — a time of magnified school spirit and festive events. Homecoming Week is filled with things that help bring students closer together. Decorating doors, buildings, and the gym are just a few of the activities. This year, Huffman certainly lived up to the tradition. Everyone seemed to have an unlimited supply of school spirit during Homecoming Week. Session rooms and spirit committees decorated their doors and buildings to begin the festivities. The enthusiasm displayed at Friday’s pep rally was overwhelming. For the second year in a row, the spirit trophy was won by a Senior class. Several students have been honored throughout the city and state for their creative artwork. Huffman has many talented students and through their work in class they are developing their talents while learning and experiencing art. VOCAL — The vocal department at Huffman is known throughout the state for the fine quality of its choral groups. The groups produce a clear, sharp sound in their performances and are never limited to one certain style or tempo of music. At each concert, the vocal department seems to do better than the time before. DRAMA — The drama department at Huffman is known for its many fine productions and its versatile and talented performers. Behind each production are many hours of rehearsal and the efforts of many dedicated workers. Other important people involved in the production besides the actors include those who build the sets, handle props, control sound and lighting, coordinate the costumes and make-up. Anyone who has seen any performance by the drama department can verify that its outstanding reputation is well deserved. 38 Awards Day Awards’ Day is a special event of the year — the day when numerous students are recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in many different areas of school life. Students are commended for excellence in academics, dramatics, and sports activities. Awards’ Day inspires many students to do their best, for it is an honor to receive an award on this special day. 40 Outside Activities The camaraderie and school spirit of Huffman students are not limited to the school building itself nor to the school hours. There are many planned activities organized by classes, clubs, and other groups which give the students an opportune to share good times with their friends. These activities will be a large part of the memories associated with the high school years. Faculty 42 The involvement of the faculty with students goes beyond the classroom and textbooks. They do. of course, conduct classes and do their best to educate the students, but many teachers do more than just that. They become involved in student government activities and volunteer to sponsor clubs. Teachers get to know their students and help them with problems they are having at school and elsewhere. The faculty contributes much to the overall development of the students of Huffman. 43 Freshmen 45 The freshmen are the newcomers at Huffman High School. They are beginning a new phase of their lives and making many new friends. This year's freshmen should be commended for the way they adapted to the new surroundings and showed great spirit during the ’80-'81 school year. Many freshmen take part in various school activities such as band, athletics, and choir and there are surely some future valorettes and cheerleaders. They have become true Huffman Vikings. Sophomores 46 The sophomores are at the stage in their lives when they begin to think of their future. The sophomores are a major part of the student body and they take great pride in Huffman High School. They also show great spirit in all school activities. They are constantly learning more about the world around them so they can better carry on the Huffman tradition. Before the end of the year, time will have developed all the traits of a true Viking in the Sophomores. These traits such as honesty, pride, forgiveness, and strength will also greatly benefit them later in life. 47 Juniors The Junior Class became much more involved in school activities this year. The students exemplified magnificent spirit at the pep rallies by their creative signs and unique skits. They became active in various clubs and organizations and spent many long hours planning and raising money for the Junior-Senior Prom. The Class of ’82 became a vital part of the unity of Huffman High School. 48 49 Seniors 50 The seniors this year showed everyone their tremendous amount of school spirit. At each pep rally, they managed to present a unique and imaginative skit, and always had very artistic signs. At each game, won or lost, there was always a vocal group of seniors cheering for their team. Football season was not the only time the seniors came shining through, however. The Class of ’81 loyally supported each and every activity of Huffman High School. 51 Academics 52 Pep rallies, football games, and clubs are a major part of school life, but the real reason for coming to school is to get an education. Many students don’t realize the importance of academics. The education acquired in high school greatly determines the future of every Huffman student. At Huffman, students have the opportunity to acquire a quality education. Each department at Huffman is well equipped and offers the perfect background for any career. The 1981 Miss Valhalla Pageant On the evening of November 8, 1980, fifty young ladies smiling radiantly and wearing their lovliest gowns, competed for the title of Miss Valhalla. Preliminaries were held on the preceding day at which time the girls were judged in the areas of interview, swimsuit, evening gown, and talent. The distinguished judges, Jane Bradford, Bud Hope, Mitzi Prator, Dr. John Rude, and Rick Stockdale, selected the top ten finalists. Paige Phillips, Miss Alabama 1980, was Mistress of Ceremonies. She not only added much beauty and glamour to the pageant, but also entertained the audience with her friends Dinkle and Darlene. Following the performance of the ten finalists’ talent and the presentation of special awards, the four alternates were announced and Cynthia Lamar was crowned Miss Valhalla. The Pageant, sponsored by the Annual Staff, is under the direction of Mrs. Nan Tenin-baum. Huffman is honored to have one of the two high school pageants which is a preliminary to the Miss Alabama pageant. For the fourteenth consecutive year the Valhalla Staff has given Huffman High a pictorial summary of the year’s events. Through the preparation and execution of these activities, the SGA officers, student cabinet members, and student council members learn cooperation with one another and the responsibility of leadership. Harris Speech and Drama Department Apprentice Thespians is a drama club for beginning students in the Speech and Drama Department. The club meetings prompt the theater arts and encourage students to participate in all phases of the theater and accumulate ten points of acting and technical work in order to be initiated into the International Honor Thespian Society. International Honor Thespian Society recognizes outstanding speech and drama students on many levels beginning with ratings of one-star Thespian to the Honor Bar. Other recognition includes the Thespian Oscars presented each year to juniors and seniors who have superior contributions to the promotion of the theater arts. 66 The National Forensic League is the official society for novice and varsity debaters. Degrees of excellence are awarded to debaters ho accumulate points for wins and losses at tournaments through out the state. Youth Speaks Out is channel tens special program for outstanding high school seniors. Students read widely on current topics and vc their views. Individual Events students travel with the debate teams to statewide tournaments for participation in original oratory, extempora-jous speaking, dramatic interpretation, poetic interpretation, and after dinner speaking. The Technical Crew consists of students who operate the lighting board, sound system, and follow-spot for all programs at HHS. hey are a dedicated group who know the importance of technical aspects of any theatrical performance. The Girls’ Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chansoniers, and Mixed Ensemble work hard and long to maintain the superior musical standards that have been established at Huffman High. Their participation in District, State, and Regional Contests, as well as various community programs, often brings well deserved recognition for the diligent efforts of many choral students. These girls had several service projects throughout the years. These projects were aimed at helping those in need. At the end of the year they hold a banquet for the girls. The club purchased jerseys once again this year with the symbol the unicorn, noted for its uniqueness and undying spirit. The French Club again this year continued to support its adopted third-world orphan. In addition, the purchase of additional educational materials was made to be used in the classroom and donated to Huffman High School for use by future students. Tommy Brady, and Joe Oakes present their own version of the Valorettes. 93 Football The Huffman Vikings began a very promising football season this year by winning their first two games over Hewitt and Ens-ley. But just as things began to look good, the Vikings lost the next three games to Erwin. Berry and Gardendale. Huffman lost two key players in the Berry game when both Steve Jones and Russell Person were hurt. The Viks regained their momentum by defeating Woodlawn but quickly lost it again the following weekend when they lost the Homecoming game to Phillips. The Viks suffered a bad blow in the Woodlawn game when David Garrison, first string quarterback, broke his collarbone on the opening play of the game. Also, during the Phillips game, Craig Daniels got hurt and was out for the remainder of the season. Regardless of these crucial injuries, the Vikings finished out the season with a record of 5-5 by defeating Hayes and Carver but losing to Banks. 96 Baseball Since baseball began here at Huffman, the coaches have consistently produced excellent teams. The state play-offs began in 1972 and Huffman has been eligible to go every year. In 1977 they won the state championship which was a great achievement. This past year was no different. The Vikings record was 26-9 and they again went to the play-offs. In the first round they beat Tuscaloosa Central and went on to the state quarter finals. Unfortunately they lost that game to Shades Valley. Two new school records were set in 1980: Most Strikeouts — 180. Jay Tibbs and Most Strikeouts for one game — 22 (7 innings), also set by Tibbs. Huffman owes a great deal to the coaches. Phil English and Mike Caraway, and also to the players who have worked so hard to make up these exceptional teams. Tt J 97 Basketball The Huffman High Basketball Team played a very rough schedule this year but did manage to win several games. The team, which has a lot of young talent, anticipates a better season next year. Throughout the year they seemed plagued by bad luck and even had to change coaches mid-way through the season. Even though things weren’t going well on the court, the sidelines could not have been better taken care of. The Huffman High School cheerleaders added five male cheerleaders to the squad this year. The male cheerleaders seemed to enhance and add a new dimension to cheering here at Huffman. We sincerely hope this tradition will be continued in the future. 98 Soccer Boys' Soccer is divided into a fall and spring season. Their record for the 1980 spring season was 15 wins and 5 losses. They won the Huffman Invitational and beat the state champions. Jackson Olin. They finished their 1980 fall season with a record of 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. They placed second in the Mid-State League and fourth in the Mid-State Invitational. The Girls Soccer team finished their 1980 season with a record of 18 wins and only I loss. The girls placed first in the city, won the Mobile Tournament and were the State champions. They went on to beat the Mississippi State champions. Their only loss was against the Florida State champs in Miami. They also won the Indian Springs Invitational where Michael LeBlanc was named Most Valuable Player. Another outstanding player. Cynthia Christian, was named Post Herald Pep Player of the Week. 99 Volleyball and Tennis The Huffman High Girls’ Volleyball Team, coached by Mrs. Campbell, worked hard again this year to produce another excellent season. Their record of 19 wins and only 5 losses speaks for itself. The girls nearly won the city but came in second losing to Ramsey. They also placed second in the regional, again losing to Ramsey in overtime. The Tennis Team, also coached by Mrs. Campbell, has had a slow start this year due to the enormous number of people trying to make the team. Last year their record was 9 wins and 4 losses. They placed second in the regional losing to Mt. Brook. They finished their year by placing eighth in the State Tournament. Two of last year’s finest players, Glenn Morton and Scott Bruce, are returning this year. 100 Track and Swim Team Huffman High once again participated in the local swim team. PAC which is made up of members from surrounding schools. PAC has placed first in a local swim meet and third at the Hunstville Swim meet this year. The team also did well last year placing third in both the Huntsville and Montgomery meets. The team practices at Jeff State and is coached by Marylyn Davis. The Track Team expects a very good season this spring and hopes to surpass last year’s achievements. TOGA — Technical Crew Senior Put Much Work Into Pep Rallies During the first ten weeks of school, groups of dedicated seniors gathered at various places to paint signs for the pep rallies. Students spent several afternoons and nights each week painting colorful signs and planning a skit for each pep rally. When the night before the pep rally came, it was time to roll up the signs, buy tape, balloons, and streamers, and head to the gym to decorate. The many hours of hard work paid off when the senior class was awarded the Homecoming Spirit Trophy and the Season Spirit Trophy. 172 National Honor Society Taps New Members Being inducted as a member of the National Honor Society is the highest honor a Huffman High School Student may receive. Membership is based on scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students must excel in all these areas to be selected. Each spring new members from the junior and senior classes are tapped. A special activity period is designated for this ceremony. Speeches are given by current members on the different areas on which membership is based. The President of the Society announces the names of the new members and each one is tapped. Following the ceremony a tea is given for the inductees and their parents. New members inducted as juniors are Jeff Burdette, Julie Brock, Donna Carter, Jimmy Clements, Sandra Clements, Jayna Jacobson, Cynthia Lamar, Suzanne Martina, Tanya Walker, and Connie Wear. 174 Internship Program Provides On the Job Training for Students The Executive High School Internship Program allows high schools seniors to take a semester leave from their regular studies to serve as special assistants to officials in government, business, education, health, the arts, law, civic affairs, and related fields. Executive Interns spend Monday through Thursday with their sponsors, attending meetings and conferences, preparing reports and making presentations, and following up on special assignments. Each Friday they plan and conduct seminars with the assistance of the program coordinator. Topics include urban policy development, administration, and management. They discuss readings, meet with officials, make visits to programs in operation, and often make their own presentations. The Executive High School Internship Program enables students with initiative to gain actual experience in the world of executives and organizations. I’m goin back,” to that city of my past, my hometown Birmingham, “Uptown down South.” It’s been said you can’t go home again, but Birmingham is the magic city and here all is possible. even returning to those magic memories of our high school days. Join me as I return to those days of laughter, joy. and those always present tears. Those magic memories began with that frightening transition from elementary school to high school. “I can recall the limes” I walked ’round and ’round with my mind joining my feet in a seemingly everlasting roundabout journey. Everything was new to me. I guess that’s why freshman means “beginner,” but it didn’t take me long to learn that there wasn’t a swimming pool, an elevator, an upstairs ramp to the gym, or even that seniors occasionally walk into the wrong room. It was here as freshmen that our compact circle of 8th grade friends went in different directions. Yet as some went, others came, and before we knew it. another year had begun and we were called sophomores. With the advent of our own transportation, life became more exciting socially. At the same time it became more difficult academically. As our circle of friends grew and continued to change, half of what they call “the best years of your life” were over, but not gone. With half behind and half ahead, as juniors, second in rank now. we ventured on. “1 can recall the time” when as juniors we moved from one side of the gym to the other at pep rallies. Life on the whole was beginning to take on a little more serious aspect. However, the fun was still there, and plenty of it. As juniors we realized that the friendships we had formed were not only for today but for all our tomorrows. Writh only a little over a year left, the time seemed too short to cram all those good times into the few months before graduation. It was now that the twenty-four hours in the day just weren’t enough to take care of everything 1 had to do. Everything seemed so confusing. By using the weekend to recuperate from the school week and the school week to recuperate from the weekend, 1 built up an endurance for lack of sleep which 1 was sure 1 would need in college. My future was just ahead, and closer than ever. “I can recall the time when that array of college and military information just added to my confusion — ACT, SAT, scholarships, applications for everything. My senior year was hectic, but it was also fantastic in many ways. The friends I'd made over the years are easily found in magic memories when we shared not only material objects but our lives with each other. These magic memories will provide the courage as we venture from graduation to the world of true reality.
