English [ m 1 Cu rriculum The required study of Psychology helps sophomores to learn about the concepts of life and motives for actions. Hero Jerry Brown, Cheryl Verchot, Cheryl Dunn, and Dale Byram voice their opinions in relation to personal problems. Mr. Anderson, a practice teacher, employs the use of visual aids in teaching Mrs. Causey's history students the settlement of the different sections of the United States. English Literature teaches students about the social, historical, and literary life of the early periods. Students eagerly participate in projects to make the subject more interesting. Our school is very proud of its language department. Mr. Holliman's Spanish classes not only learn to speak the language, but they also learn about the people and customs of the Spanishspeaking countries. ■Mfti Curriculum In our modern world today it is very important that students fully understand the space age. Our Democracy students not only learn the laws that govern our country, but they also learn of the various programs sponsored by our government. We are fortunate in havinq an excellent math department which offers courses in advanced math to college preparatory students. In Mr. Batson's Algebra II class, Ann Griffin, Linda Champion, and Judy Courington write problems from their homework assignments to explain to the class. Our advanced science program gives students a strong foundation for college. Joe Gibbs, Larry Vines, and Bud Syx are pictured as they perform a practical experiment to calculate acceleration due to the force of gravity. The biology department teaches students both the external and internal parts of animals and plants. Mrs. Hayles supervises the disecting of starfish by Ted Freeman and Margaret McKinney. [ 16 ] Curriculum Students in Business Education are given the opportunity to better understand business life through our Business English course. Not only are they taught the fundamental grammar rules, but they also learn to use the various equipment which they will encounter in the business world. Typing II offers students many benefits other than typing. Students learn many new and different techniques which will be of great value to them in the future. Bede Pagett uses the dictaphone, and Ganelle Stanley is shown as she inspects the files. Miss Rosser's Shorthand I class is learning to take dictation. A knowledge of this subject will not only benefit them in business life but will also be a great help to them in college. Bookkeeping is a major part of our Business Education program. Adding machines save time and work in adding long columns of figures. Curriculu m This year our school is offering a new class to stress the importance of good music. Study is made easier with quiet music playing in the background. Our Home Economics Department, under the supervision of Mrs. Flowers, is furnished with all the comforts of home. After three years of this subject, Brenda Perry, Judy Mize, and Lois Rounsaville will be able to make any garment with few complaints. Physical fitness is an important part of our daily lives. Our girls keep trim and fit by exercising each day. Many students have improved their grades in many of their subjects by taking advantage of our excellent reading course. This group makes use of the phrase-a-scopes to increase their speed. [ 18 ] Curriculum Our stage band is an added attraction to our school. They perform at many functions both in and out of school. This band also has a pianist, Andy Barbee, who is not shown. Mr. Hancock has done a marvelous job with our art department. Many of the art students have won honors at the state fair. They make use of pencils, ceramics, pastels, and charcoal as well as paints. Daily physical exercise is required for all boys enrolled in the physical education program. The boys also participate in such sports as basketball, football, baseball, and wrestling. Talented students who are interested in architecture and engineering take drafting. This subject gives them a basic knowledge of structure and design. I 19 ] Classes A GREATER KNOWLEDGE The quest for knowledge constantly drives each student to do his best. The satisfaction gained from doing one's best is the just reward. In the classrooms of Hueytown High School, students are encouraged to do the most desirable work possible and strive for a greater knowledge. On the opposite pago is ono of Miss Goisler's chemistry classes at work.
