1963 RETROSPECT Published by the RETROSPECT STAFF of HUEYTOWN HIGH SCHOOL HUEYTOWN, ALABAMA EDITOR..............JLJDY DAVIS BUSINESS MANAGER...DEANNA PRATER FOREWORD The goal in life of each person is to be a success in whatever field he plans to enter. This year the Retrospect Staff hopes to point out the necessity of education in being successful. We endeavor to show you, the student body, how each individual class, organization, and student plays a part in receiving this education as each star plays a part in lighting the heavens at night. In doing so, we present to you as our theme for the 1963 Retrospect— EDUCATION—THE STAR OF SUCCESS TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty Curriculum Student Life Classes Features Athletics Organization 6 14 87 20 90 110 126 1963 DEDICATION Dedicated to teaching os an artist is dedicated to perfection, Mrs. McKinney exemplifies those characteristics she seeks to develop in her students. We humbly pay tribute to her through this dedication. FACULTY 'Twinkle, twinkle little star, How I wonder..................................................................................... Yes, this moy be a rhyme from earlier school days, but it has meaning. We at Hueytown are indebted to our wonderful Faculty for many things, but most of all for presenting us with knowledge that brings clarity to us about the things of which we wonder. Surely they aid us in our grasp for Education—the Star of Success. Mrs. Stone, a dcdicotcd teacher in the field of business administration, shows Mr. Batson, tcochor of advanced moth, why mathematics is essential to the typist. •Humimin IS iNGfAR ucncA 00 YOURSELF  •  m li ■ iwf 11 ltd' NOTICE! Vine's class, panel discussions give the student a better understanding of our gcvarnment and the laws by which each of us lives. With cur world in the position it is today, it is very necessary that we understand the other nations around us. Mrs. McKinney uses many visual aids in teaching French, thus, helping her students to understand the subject better. John Allman, Barbara Fox, Judy Huff, and Jimmy Folmar show a few of the aids used for this better understanding. I M ] CURRICULUM In Mrs. Geislar's chemistry class, the students learn the answers to various laws, theories, and problems relating to everyday life. Here Kenneth Singloy, Bill Richards, and Anita Lacy take advantage of the equipment provided to help solve problems Although our world is tending to turn to modern art, Judy Jones is confused about Kenneth Cartee's painting. Under the outstanding direction of Mr. Hancock, our art department has carried out an extensive program. I 15 ] CURRICULUM Not only does our boys' quartet have a sense of humor, but they also sing well. The quartet consists of Ronnie Shuff, Michael Redmond, Barry Huey, Richard Bolin, and Brenda Sue Waldrop, pianist. In Mrs. Teague's Business English class, she demonstrates different occasions that might possibly happen in an office and thus prepares the students for anything that may arrive in the business world ahead of them. Here Mrs. Teague, Donna Schmidlkofer, and Mary Houston demonstrate the use of the telephone. Shakespeare plays a large role in college preparatory English classes. Many aids such as the study books shown here are used to develop the appreciation of the classics. College English is one of the many classes which enable students to enter college well prepared. ( 16 ] CURRICULUM I 21 Drofting is a subject taken by the students who are talented and interested in architecture. This class is taught by Mr. John Hall. The study of formulos is an important part of Mr. Batson's solid geometry course. Bill Ginn and Rose Dosher are comparing the different ways to do a problem correctly. Bill's drawing helps him to solve and explain his problem more fully. College biology offers many fields to interested students. Here Terry Finch takes advantage of Waynetta Wilson's being afraid of insects. Each year Miss Clustie McTyeire requires her students to make a collection of various insects, labeling each division separately. ( 17 ] CURRICULUM The reoding classes ot Hueytown are taught to improve the student's reoding skill. As shown here, Mr. Vines uses films to help improve this skill. Our senior dramatics class has grown very rapidly in the few years we have had it. The first project of the class is to produce a Christmas play, and later the production of the senior play lies in their hands. Many enjoyable hours for the student body is produced by their efforts. Mrs. Helen Gillespie teaches various activities to those in the girls' physical education classes. The activities in which the students participate help develop both physical and mental health. Here Betty Hanson attempts a free shot. Homemaking students are taught the basic principles in home management, sewing and cooking The correct setting of a table is a very important achievement Here Ann Jones and Marguerite Lambert demonstrate how to set an attractive table. [ 18 ] CURRICULUM Shorthand and typing are two important divisions in our commercial department. Here the students learn valuable information that will aid them in nearly any career they wish to enter, either commercial or otherwise. The complete cycle of bookkeeping and accounting taught here at Huey-town assures the students of confidence and a well-developed skill with which to meet the world and its ever-growing demand for bookkeepers and accountants. Showns at the adding machines are Janice Mason, Charlie Robertson and Cecelia Wellborn. Physical fitness is very important at Hueytown. The boys in Coach Higginbotham and Coach Holsembacks' physical education class are sure to be in good physical condition. Shown in the picture is Ronald Roper doing his daily exercise. Shown here is a tenth grade psychology class. Psychology helps the student to develop an understanding of himself as well as his fellow classmates. The students taking part in a panel discussion are Jimmy Parsons, Pat Mur-phee and Tommy Odom. [ 19 ] CLASSES What you are. As each star contributes to the formation of a constellation, so each class contributes to the formation of Hueytown High. The sophomore, junior, and senior classes each aid in the formation of the atmosphere in which we study in our reach for Education—The Star of Success. Each member of the staff works on a special section; however, Judy is responsible for all of the sections. It is truly an honor to be editor, but it is also a great responsibility. Deanna has charge of selling ads. She is responsible for editing the ad section. We, the members of the 1963 Retrospect, are proud of our capable leaders. [ 87 ] STUDENT LIFE This year the senior class Christmas party was enjoyed by everyone. Entertainment was provided by the dramatics class with the play 'The Christmas That Bounced. The prom is a big event for everyone. The theme last year was Showboat. The sponsors were Mrs. Eubank, Mrs. Hamilton, and Mr. Andrews. The magazine soles, encouraged by two captains from each homeroom, is a very important part in producing the annual. This year we are very proud to say that our seniors sold more magazines than any other senior class attending Huey-town. The cheerleaders help tremendously in raising the school spirit of the pep rallies and ball gomes. Their great spirit has carried us through many victories. [ 88 ] STUDENT LIFE i I Each year the new sophomores find they need help in finding their classrooms.
