The RETROSPECT of HUEYTOWN HIGH SCHOOL HUEYTOWN ALABAMA V 1958 They say that life is a highway and its milestones are the years —Joyce Kilmer THROUGH THE YEARS To Mr. H. F. Gilmore, the founder and only principal of Hueytown High School for thirty-five years, goes much of the credit for the steady growth of our school not only in number of pupils, teachers and buildings, but also in the development of character and citizenship among its students. He always maintained strict discipline; this allowed all the energies of the school to be used for the benefit of the pupils. Yet with this firmness, there was always a respect for individual personality which engendered love and warm friendship in students and faculty alike. Mr. Gilmore has kept close contact with the community. He lived there and served one of the churches as deacon and Sunday School teacher. As a scholar, a builder, and a Christian gentleman. Professor Gilmore has made his place in our history. MR. H. F. GILMORE We spend our years as a tale that is told. —Psalms These five teachers have given a total of one hundred and forty-four years of service to Hueytown High. MISS EDITH GEISLER MRS. MAE GILMORE MR. R. E. DEESE Affectionately remembered as Fess 1921-1951 MRS. NEVA MORAN MISS CARRIE PURSELL 1958 These clippings were token from the high school periodical. HUEYTOWN JOINED THE ALABAMA DEBATING LEAGUE Huey town High School has joined the Alabama Debating League. The debaters to represent the school are George Cunningham, Charles Copeland, Wel-liy Smith and Horace Franklin. The debate is ‘“Resolved, That the time is now ripe for the disarmament of all nations.” The debate will take place at the University of Alabama some time in the first week of May. This debate is to decide the standing of Huey town High School and other schools in debating. It will be a championship debate, as all the minor teams have been eliminated in the preliminary debates. HU-TO-HI. 1922 GREAT CREDIT DUE GIRLS The Camp Fire Girls of Hucy-town, under the guardianship of Mrs. Mary bell Foust, went into debt $250 so that Hueytown High School might have a big eight foot concrete walk from the front of the building to the road. The Girls took the situation in hand and have paid out that debt by themselves. 1922 SCHOOL AFFILIATED Mr. Gilmore, the principal, has received the information from the State Department that Hueytown has passed all requirements to be met and is affiliated, and the students graduating from here can go to any college in the state without having to take an examination. Today, 1958, only 95 of Alabama's 341 white high schools are accredited. High Style — 1922 Grace Parson Ellington, Mildred Thompson Turner, Annie Wilson Byrd, Zelma Huey Marsh. In 1933, mainly with WPA labor, the stadium was built in a natural bowl. The school and patrons raised the money to pay for the material used. FOREWORD TABLE OF CONTENTS Organizations Athletics Advertisements In 1958—a year long to be remembered, for at that time o chapter in the 37 year history of Hueytown High came to a close. We, the staff of your RETROSPECT have tried to bring to you a story of the beginning and the ending of an era in the life of our school. We would like to pay tribute to those who have given their energies, their aspirations, and their hopes to make Hueytown the school it is today. But The best is yet to be for we begin a new and exciting era next year. Because we have literally been bursting at the seams in growth we are moving the senior high school to a new location. On Friday, April 26, 1957, the contract was let for a new school. The present building will be a junior high school. If we may paraphase Shakespeare's All the world's a stage , let us say the curtoin has rung down on the first act. We look forward to the next act for which the first was made with hope for o glorious future. Editor Art Editor Business Manager GLORIA CAIN DORMAN BATSON BEVERLY VINES DEDICATION No one could be more o port of Hueytown High School than Mr. Malcolm R. Howell. With understanding and friendliness he has won a place in the hearts of the entire' student body. To him, we sincerely dedicate this the 1958 RETROSPECT. CLASS OF 1930 There were five teachers on the first faculty at Hueyfown in 1921. They were H. F. Gilmore, principal; Miss Cora Waldrop, Miss Elizabeth Lofton, Mr. R. E. Deese, and Mr. W. C. Parsons. The present faculty, at right, consists of the principal and forty-six teachers. In the early years most of the subjects taught were academic, but with the rapid growth of the student body and their needs for vocational and business education, many teachers were added to serve in these fields. In addition to college preparatory courses, such os mathematics, science, and languages, there are now being taught dosses in typing, bookkeeping, shorthand and recordkeeping, The typing classes have grown so rapidly the school now has one hundred and twenty typewriters. Homemaking, shop, and Driver Training serve many. Music in both choral and band has become an important element in the curriculum. Educational TV, art, speech, mechanical drawing and special reading classes, enrich the program. A counselor works full time on guidance for the students. Faculty members use many modern tools to faciliate learning such as a controlled reader and visual aids, which include films ond film strips. A tope recorder is a great asset in some classes. A library containing 6400 volumes and 50 periodicals serves the students. I So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. —Psalms FACULTY Mrs. Mildred Bedingfield A.B.
