On October 28, in Britteil Auditorium the cast was making the final touches for the first performance of “The Miracle Worker.” The Junior class play was performed four nights. The crew had worked during the summer to bring the play to a climax. Emma Serrano and Jo Ann Eddy played the part of Helen Keller, who is an infant when the curtain rises. Annie Sullivan, portrayed by Katy Nettles and Alberta Wright, enters Helen’s life later. The key word to describe this play is conflict. There is conflict between Helen and Annie, Annie and the father, and between the brother and the father. The audience is held in suspense all through the performance. They sit spellbound at the climax when Annie, after weeks of arguing and sometimes fighting physical- ly, teaches Helen to say her first word — water. 141
