THE VOYAGE 1965 •t Volume 6 HUENEME HIGH SCHOOL OXNARD, CALIFORNIA o c? sc Cr FOREWORD Every high school student likes to boast of the superiority, traditions, high standards, and accomplishments of his high school. We of Hueneme High can be especially proud, but we do not need to boast — our superiority is evident to all. One day, the traditions of our school will be only cherished and honored memories, but today they are the living attributes of a fine high school. Hueneme has attained high standards in its scholastic and extra-curricular activities, and every year its members bring forth impressive and worthy accomplishments. This year the Voyage staff has embodied the fine qualities of our school in an emblem. Each symbol within the emblem denotes a different aspect of our achievements. The heroic Hueneme Viking is fittingly the central figure of the emblem. He is accompanied on each side by vining ivy which expresses the many memorable experiences accumulated during our four-year voyage through Hueneme High. The shield symbolizes one of Hueneme’s foremost qualities —the strength and faith which each student possesses merely by being a mighty Viking. This strength and faith has been clearly illustrated by the large number of students who attend our school events. We have always encouraged and praised our teams for their accomplishments, whether trivial or great. The winged foot of our emblem holds a special significance for us this year. It is the symbol of our victorious conquest of the Channel League cross country title. This achievement along with our other athletic victories, shows the true fight- ing spirit of our athletic teams. Our school has always been known for the scholastic achievements of its student body. This continuous search for knowledge and understanding is de- picted by the lamp of knowledge. Last, but certainly not least, the ribbon of our emblem is used to express the unity of our student body in spirit, pride, and fellowship. We are all Hueneme Vikings and we are all proud of our school —the biggest and the best. 4 IN MEMORIAM Chris William May Jeff Lore! Power Crossing the liar Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me! And may there he no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep. Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell. When I embark: For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far. I hope to see my Pilot face to face When 1 have crossed the bar. 5 Allred Tennyson DEDICATION Mr. Gene Smith. Assistant Principal I hroughout the history of Hueneme High School, our students have come to realize that much gratitude and admiration should be given to our fine, hard-working administration. This year we wish to honor one of our most respected administrators —a man truly deserving of our recognition and praise. As Assistant Principal of Hueneme High School, this man has served as a guiding light to many a Viking student, as well as to the faculty and administration. He has shown many of us the pathway to success, and in doing so, he has promoted the excellent standards and fine reputation of our school. He has fulfilled the duties and responsibilities of his position and has still been able to give assistance when a helping hand was needed. With these thoughts in mind, we proudly dedicate the 1965 Voyage to Mr. Gene Smith. Assistant Principal of Hueneme High School. 7 ADMIN IS TRA TION AND FACULTY The future is a great land ... The challenge was given to the Vikings this year to become individual heroes on every team. The “eager heavers built America. After a hectic Serf Week in which many of the spirited freshmen participated, they elected their first class president —Ann Linstrom. When Ann transferred from Hueneme High. Bev DeBone was elected to fill the vacancy. Bev and the rest of her cabinet led the class in the sponsoring of such things as a color day, clash day, dress-up day. pennant sale, and numerous bake sales. The spirit of the class continued as its members became sophomores and elected Ron Andrade as their presi- dent — who was later replaced by Nancy Broyles. The junior year became the first really big year for our class. Under the leadership of president Bob Woodruff, the class enjoyed a successful year raising money through bake sales, concessions, and the junior class play, “Our Town. to finance the junior-senior prom. The class spirit never died as its members went on to become mighty seniors and elect Rick Williams as presi- dent. This big year for the class of 65 brought all the advantages of being a senior. After a very successful candy sale, the class ordered its senior sweatshirts in the class colors of green and blue and later presented the senior class play, “Mr. Roberts.” Many activities were enjoyed including the annual senior ditch day until the big day arrived. Graduation and the all-night party at Disneyland ended the wonderful times at Hueneme High, but they did not end the memories which will linger on in the minds of the spirited class of 1965. 30 31 CHARLES R. Secretary: Marti Roth, President; Jo Shepherd,Treasurer; and Pat Davis, Vice-President. The youngest class at Hueneme High was honored during the first lull week of school with “Viking Serf Week.” During this week, freshmen were sold as slaves to upperclassmen and carried out their duties on Friday of that week. Although the slaves had to do many embarrassing things, all was for- given at the “Serf Stomp” held for the freshmen. Under the leadership of an all girl cabinet including President Marti Roth, the class engaged in many activities such as entering a car in the Home- coming Parade and holding a bermuda day later in the year. A few of their main projects, however, were drawing up of a constitu- tion and a budget of their own. 116 Marianne Abruzzese Corinne Ackerman Cecil Adams Dana Adams Eunice Adams Dan Ahlstrom Diane Alainillo Harry Alley Kandy Allison Bert Alton Rachel Alvarez Robert Anderson Susan Anderson Lupe Andrade Bill Andress Wally Andrews Dolores Arguellcs Mary Armenta Kathy Arnold Ruth Arnold Pat Arter Pat Ayala Leslie Badger Jerry Baker Ruth Baldwin Katie Balicki Michael Barby Mary Barragan Janet Barrington John Barron Carl Bauman 117 Carol Beckctl Mike Bellamy Janette Bellomy Frances Beltran Luis Beltran Henry Bennett Mindy Bergman Martin Berry Laura Bird Bill Birgbaucr Wilma Bishop Susan Blair Steve Blundell Darlene Boemmels Mike Bolster Danny Boston Lon Box Barbara Brakebill Nancy Brant Dick Brawley . QUEEN AND COURT Queen; Sieve Grauten, Voyage King;l.inda Heller; Rick William ; “THE MIRACLE STUDENTS EXCEL IN “Miracle Worker” By Ken Winter I still don’t believe it. A high school junior class could never do justice to William Gibson’s master- piece about a blind girl and her determined, devoted teacher. But the troupe from Hueneme High did it. They worked a miracle with “The Miracle Worker.” The first pleasant sur- prise that greets the audi- ence is the beautifully de- signed simultaneous set- ting of Terry Harris on the cramped quarters of Brittell Auditorium stage. This young genius put a dining room, a bedroom and a cot- tage interior on a stage not much bigger than a breadbox. Oh yes, and the three settings are there at the same time through the entire play. The second surprise is an intricate light plot made out of a circuit board and a handful of 60-watt bulbs that were designed the week after Edison got lit up for the first time. The third surprise was one of the most magni- ficent wardrobes of 1880 authenticity ever stitch- ed together in any high school —or community the- ater—or professional the- ater for that matter. But then the greatest surprise when that set and those lights and those cos- tumes come alive. Of course, one must mention Katy Nettles and Alberta Wright in the role of Annie Sullivan, the teacher: and LEFT TO RIGHT: Katy Nettles as Annie Sullivan and Jo Ann Eddy as Helen Keller. Jo Ann Eddy and Emma Serrano as young Helen Keller, the blind deaf and dumb animal-turned- human. Two demanding roles to tax the depth of a seasoned veteran, but not too much for four gifted amateurs. There are other impor- tant supporting actors that stood out such as Chuck Ackley as Mr. Keller, Pat Mealer as Aunt Ev and Jack Fowler as James; but then one must remember the entire cast of dedi- cated actors and produc- tion crew. 138 WORKER” 139 140 On October 28, in Britteil Auditorium the cast was making the final touches for the first performance of “The Miracle Worker.” The Junior class play was performed four nights. The crew had worked during the summer to bring the play to a climax. Emma Serrano and Jo Ann Eddy played the part of Helen Keller, who is an infant when the curtain rises. Annie Sullivan, portrayed by Katy Nettles and Alberta Wright, enters Helen’s life later. The key word to describe this play is conflict. There is conflict between Helen and Annie, Annie and the father, and between the brother and the father. The audience is held in suspense all through the performance. They sit spellbound at the climax when Annie, after weeks of arguing and sometimes fighting physical- ly, teaches Helen to say her first word — water. 141 HOMECOMING ANL Beard-Growing Contest Winners. Sue llallstrom TEN Cindy Williams Dorothy Keeton Linda Woodson AMERICAN Sue Taylor To All Hueneme Vikings, This has been a fantastic year —full of exciting and joyous experiences which will never fade from my memory. 1 have met many wonderful people, especially on the Hueneme High campus. The friendship and school spirit was most impres- sive. and quite beyond anything I had every imagined. Everyone in and out of AFS has been exceptionally helpful and wonderful to me during this past year, and I am extremely grateful to them for their interest has kept me from missing my own country. I only wish I could stay for another year ... and another. Vikings, being one of you and participating in school activities has been my greatest thrill, and I shall miss you, one and all when I return to my “other ' home. Witnessing the basketball and football games was most exciting and quite unlike anything we have in Australian schools. My American family has had to put up with a great deal of reorganization since I arrived. They have shared their home, their friends and their relatives with me, and for that I’m truly grateful. They all helped provide for me. the most exciting year of my life. So. fellow Vikings it is a sad farewell, yet one which will remain in my heart for many years to come. It is difficult for me to say good-bye —but I hope to return again someday or to see some of you in Australia. Sue Taylor 166 SERVICE The Horntrs — FRONT: Sue Taylor. Susan was the first Hueneme High School student to spend an entire year abroad under the Americans Abroad program of the American Field Service. Dear Vikings, When I learned that I was to be a representative of my country and my school under the AFS Americans Abroad program, naturally. I was excited. My dream had come true, but little did I know all the things that would happen of which I had never even dreamed. My year in Rafaela. Argentina with the Lijtmaer family more than met my expectations. Many of my attitudes were changed as I was given a completely new outlook on life. The one characteristic of Argentine people which impressed me most was their friendliness. I was surprised most by the similarity between them and the people of the United States, but I also began to realize how important it is for them to keep their individuality and not be forced to conform to our ideals. After a short time in Argentina, I began to feel like a “native,” but as soon as I returned to the United States. I stepped back into my place as an American. It was then that I understood fully that this is the goal of AFS. not to convert, change, or reform, but to strengthen bonds of friendship which will last forever. I'm happy, too, to return to my friends and to again be a part of the HHS student body. Que les vaya bien siempre! FBLA sponsored numerous projects this year —concessions at the Hueneme-Oxnard football game, programs at all home games, snow cone sales, and hot chocolate sales. They also assisted in raising money for the Boys’ Club and held their annual event —the Christmas canned foods drive for needy people in this area. The climax of the year was the FBLA Banquet which honors outstanding students in the business department. With only three seniors on the squad, underclassmen have gained valuable experience which should help to place the team in contention for the league title next season. In spite of the lack of seniors on the squad, the tennis team did very well this year under the leadership of Coach Mackie. 236 ii 3! n-H TENNIS Co-Captains: Frank Crowley and Pat Beal. 237 GOLF FRONT ROW: John Tokuyama, l.arry Oliver, Terry Lock, Alan Woodson.
