The spirit of learning is emphasized by our high scholastic standards; the spirit of leadership is portrayed by our student government and campus organiza- tion offices. The spirit of participation and good sportsmanship is shown by the willing- ness of our many athletes to work hard for the school's glory. The spirit of service is shown by the helpfulness of our students in organizations in the many worthwhile activities they undertake. We who graduate this year will cherish the memories of our high school experiences and the knowledge that we helped to contribute to the fine reputation of our school. Thus the theme of the 1964 yearbook is Viking Spirit. May it grow and continue to be a source of pride and ambition. ? ■' ? S . A y j! 7 yj -y 'y — TABLE OF CONTENTS t Page DEDICATION . VA.................................1 0 DEDICATION Mr. Earl Jardine, Head of the Music Department Hueneme High School presents —the Viking Marching Band! These words ring true and familiar in the ears of all Vikings. How often have we heard that rich voice boom out over the football field and felt that glow of pride and elevation? The source of this pride is a man loved by all of us. His untiring work has given our high school and community good reason to stand and cheer —the wonderful Hueneme High School Band. His efforts are not limited to this remarkable accom- plishment. This man is not one to quit with the final bell or the closing of the classroom door. He contributes outstand- ing leadership, instruction, and entertainment at all times. Who has not seen him turn cheerleader at a football rally? Who doesn't remember the little goatee he sports, mak- ing him quite the dapper figure? Who has not noticed the old baggy coat he has worn at football games —the sight is part of our tradition now. Who has not enjoyed the wonderful personable nature and humor of this man? We could go on —because this is a unique individual, one who has provided all of us with the kind of happy memories we will always cherish. We are proud to dedicate the 1964 VOYAGE to Mr. Earl Jardine, our teacher of the year. He personifies our yearbook theme, VIKING SPIRIT. J A fighting team raises school spirit. And whot better way for any girl's spirit to be raised, than on the shoulders of two brawny Vikings. rn7 i Any stranger entering our gotes is immediately impressed by the simple elegance of our campus. Though this same sight is o fomilior one to all Vikings, we never foil to toke pride and pleasure in our wonderful school. On the following pages is a color photograph depicting the excitement of sitting in the grandstands, cheering for our team. Most Vikings have felt the tremendous emotion and sus- pense of a fast moving game. And few can forget the happiness and pride that comes with a victory. J Z Q u- O % — Z — c ) H BOARD OF EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Brenda St. Hilaire, Secretary to the Board; Mr. Axel Jentcn, A st. Supt.; Dr. Joseph Crosby, Superintendent; Mr. John L. Cooley; Mr. Mike G. Vujovich; Dr. Robert E. Williams; Mr. Robert K. Matthews; and Mr. Rollo Von Slyke. True civic leaders are those who give willingly of their valuable time to serve on the Board of Education which has the difficult task of supervising the education received by thousands of young men and women of this area. Men and women who act in this capacity perform outstanding service to their community. Every Viking acknowledges his gratitude to those fine citizens whose interest is providing the best possible schools for all students. 12 DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION MR. AXEL C. JENSEN Assistant Superintendent DR. JOSEPH CROSBY Superintendent HUENEME ADMINISTRATION MR. ANDY McEUEty, Principol MRS. ALICE JOHNSON Principal's Secretory The theme of the Vikings this year has been the biggest and the best. As this voyage of our largest graduating class draws to a close, it is felt that our goals have been reached. The real success will be measured by the personal accomplishments of each of you in the days and years to come. The French translation of Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. which comes from the Greeks, uses in place of meek the word teachable. Blessed are the teachable .... remain teachable. Vikings. Have strong convictions but be open minded. Certainly, on the fundamental matters of life and those which involve our faith and conduct, we should all have strong convictions. On the many other matters in life, we should keep our minds open so that we might learn. Learn to work hard. Learn to think clearly. Learn to observe for yourself. As you observe the various facets of life, whether they be physical, organizational or ideological, be not satisfied to take them as they are. Accept it as one of the challenges of life to improve them. Andy McEuen Principal 14 MR. GENE SMITH. Vice Principol Below: Mr. Steve W. Stocks, Boys' Vicc-Principol; Miss Madeline Miedemo. When we were freshmen, Hueneme High was big, boundless, and practically brand new. And, though the vastness of our campus has increased; now four years later, its rooms and corridors are well-known to us. The Class of '64 brought a new spirit to the campus of Hueneme High. As freshmen we immediately joined in the bustle and excitement of high-school life. Led by Sam Tokoyama, we sold beanies and had our own bermuda day. We always yelled the loud- est at any event. We elected Mel Ohmes to be class president in our Sophomore year. During that year, we gained the self-assurance of upper-lower classmen. Class activities increased as we added concessions, dress-up days, and sports-nites to our list of favorite events. When we, as the Class of '64, entered our Junior year, we showed the spirit and unity that makes any class great. We were the class that did everything all the way. We performed a dramatic first in Ventura County when we staged the Greek tragedy, Antigone. Elaine Sherlock, our president, initiated many activities. And at the end of the year, we planned and presented the most beautiful and successful Junior-Senior Prom in the history of Hueneme High. Now, at the close of our Senior year, we have gathered the most unforgettable memories; cherished by all Seniors, past and present. With these memories of fun, knowledge, and friendships, we go out into the world —out to search for those ideals and goals we have dreamt about and planned for years. 32 SHERYL ANN ACKERMAN Acuppella Choir, G.A.A. The time has flown as always happens when you enjoy something. There are more similarities than differences between the United States and Spain. The people of this community have understood me as well as I have understood them. I have met here many wonderful people and have learned to understand their ideas. My American family has shared its home, its daily living, and its ideas with me; I feel like one of the family. Being a Viking, attending and cheering at the games, being in the Viking Band, dressing in red and white are some of the things that I will never forget. There are many strong friendship ties between many Vikings and myself. These friendships ore deep in my heart and will never be erased. It is too hard for me to say Good-bye, so Hosto la vista, amigos. 160 Shown ai the fight ore David and his American family— The Comminj. tar A.F.S ADULT COMMITTEE - ROW ONE, Sealed, left to Right: Mrs. Cox, Mrs. McCarthy, Mr. Pidduck, Mrs. McEuen. Though a gridiron champi- on ship was not achieved, our team's reputation for playing a good game was realized by all. This year the Varsity team scored overwhelming victories over Fillmore and St. John Vianney. Probably the most exciting game was that against Oxnard, our cross-town rival. It was a close game with the score resulting in a tie. Every Viking in the stands felt un- bounded pride and admiration for their hard-hitting team out on the field. Our football team renewed the traditions of fight and victory as set forth by the Vikings of old. We are proud and honored to call them Hueneme Vikings.
