Table of Contents - 1981 66 S- PIONEER Hudsonville High School 168 Hudsonville, Michigan As we reflect on the 1980-81 school year we see how the world and the times have changed and how these changes have shaped our lives. Sometimes we watched the events occur, while at other times we created them. Hudsonville High School made events special and made 1981 unique. Recorded here, are The Faces and Events of 1981. 2 Opening Dedication We are proud to dedicate this 1980- 1981 yearbook to Mr. Rahn Bentley, a man who has won the respect and admiration of his colleagues and stu- dents through his dedication to mak- ing school and athletics more fun for everyone. Mr. Bentley has taught at Hudsonville for 12 years. He has ini- tiated many new courses and pro- grams to our curriculum including Chinese History, Mythology, swim- ming class, and the gynastics show that tours the grade schools. He also started programs such summer gym- nastics, tennis, swimming, and the spring sports trips down South. Mr. Bentley has had many achieve- ments throughout his career. He went to South High where he played foot- ball and made the All City, Grand Rapids Press All City, and Wood T.V. All Stars first teams. He also received an All-State Honorable Mention. In boxing, he was a Novice City Champ, Open Heavyweight City Champ, and Open Heavyweight State Champ. He also played first singles in tennis. He then went to Michigan State for four years on a full-ride football scholar- ship. He started 37 games in a row and received the Spartan of the Week award twice. After college, he played football for one season with the Blaz- ers. During his years at Hudsonville, he brought his touch football team to a state championship and a number five position in the nation. Mr. Bent- ley has also brought the attitude of football is fun and we have fun play- ing football on Friday nights. The swimming and tennis teams have earned repeated excellence in their leagues under Mr. Bentley’s coach- ing. We owe a great deal to you Mr. Bentley and this is only one of the small ways we have to express our gratitude and appreciation for all you have done for us. Thanks so much! Dedication 3 Opening 5 6 Opening Opening 7 I lomrcmnme Homecoming Homecoming is often called the highlight of the school year. Whether it is the excitement of playing in the game, marching with the band, halftime activities, or the fun of being in the stands, home- coming holds excitement for everyone. In the game against Hamilton, everyone dis- played spirit and determination which resulted in a victory of 24-3. During halftime activities, Lori Vruggink and Mitch ByUer were crowned qu n and king. Also, the seniors’ winning float was pulled around the track. Lastly, although it is rarely mentioned, much of homecoming’s success depends upon the support of those who attend the game and it should be said that your interest and participation are greatly appreciated. llnmcciimin ( Spirit Week 1980 Spirit week “80” was a fun-filled week. It started out with Western day on Monday. Tuesday was 50's day and punk rock. Next brought hat and jersey day on Wednesday, Thurscjjp brought a bunch of unusual mon- sters aoy freaks to school. The week was con- cluded with the traditional maize and blue day, flower day and an exciting pep assembly. . _ Spirit Week 11 Queen Lori Vruggink Homecoming Court E A. JUNIORS: Linda Kaurala. Thanks for every thing, we appreciate it more than you will ever know. You changed the world of those you met with a smile accented by sparkling eyes.” Kevin was a living definition of the words grit, spunk, perserverance, grace, humor, tease, tolerance, com- passion and Christian witness. Kevin was not a student, he was a teacher. The Eagles, coached by Jim Galvin. Keith Burgess, and Dave Raterink, based their season on the 7 steps and philosophy of being the hitter, not the hitee. Seven Eagles received all-conference honors, they were Kraig Jansen, Mike Nykamp. Martin Meleen, Kent Vanderloon. Brian Marlink. Dave Lidgara. and Dave Grysen. All-Area Eagles were Dave Grysen - defensive back. Kraic Jansen - Kicker. Dave Lidgard - of- fensive tackle, and Brian Marlink - defensive tackle. Kraig )ansen was also honored by being selected to the Class B All-State team as a kicker. The varsity is graduating 19 seniors that will be sorely missed, but a fine group of underclassmen will be sure to provide another good season for Hudsonville High School. Basketball Golf Team Chips Away at Title The golf team had a record turnout of twenty-six golfers trying to either make the varsity (six players) or the junior varsity (ten players). This large turnout in- cluded many fine golfers and resulted in a second place finish in the O-K Blue Division with a 10-4 record. We were also successful in winning the con- ference match at Briarwood with a final total of 326 strokes for 18 holes counting our four best scores. Individually, six seniors made up the varsity team which was led by Paul De Boer who compiled the best nine-hole average in the history of our school. Not only was Paul’s 37.04 average per nine holes our best ever, he also won the conference match with a one over par 72 to earn him all-conference honors for the second time. Mark Warren was also all- conference with a 42.9 average. Brian Borchers averaged 43.5, Tim Van Zyll 46.3. Their overall 20-0 record is an excellent tribute to the quality of both their attitudes and their abilities. Coach Keith Burgess stresses the fact that this fine record was brought about by a total team effort and not just one or two “stars. This team has generated tremendous support from both the students and the entire community. Our team was consistently ranked as one of the best in the state throughout the season, as one of only two class B teams that were undefeated in the regular season. I chose to go to an all-boy Christian school because of their exchange program, and I studied hard so I could go to America. I go to my school by train six days a week. My family does not own a car. I like riding the school bus to school. I must wear a suit every day to my Japanese high school and we cannot wear jewelry. I like wearing jeans to Hudsonville High. I feel very free here!
