Hudsonville High School Hudsonville, Michigan 2 Dedication We the students of Hudsonville High School would like to dedicate this 1978-79 Pioneer to Mrs. Ruth Del- bridge. She has served our school system as a dedi- cated teacher for the past 28 years. She previously taught in Illinois for a period of four years. Upon coming to Hudsonville she began teaching gym and later turned to teaching Social Studies full time. She has always been concerned about her students and makes time for each one of them. Her devotion to her work serves as an inspiration to all who know her. The graduating seniors of Hudsonville High School will always remember her ever smiling face. In leaving, we would like to send her our love and our best of wishes for her future. 3 Table of Contents Juniors — 63 Administration — 17 Sophomores — Seniors — 31 Activities—101 Freshmen — 87 Organization —117 Sports—131 Special Days Brighten Spirit Week During Spirit Week there are always a lot of strange looking people roaming the halls at Hudsie. This year was no exception. Students and teachers showed their spirit by dressing up for 50’s Day, Career Day, Gangster Day, Go Bananas Day, and Maize and Blue Hillbillie Day. The class that showed the most spirit was the Freshmen, with the seniors coming in a close second. A slave auction and a banana-eating contest were held on Thursday. The Juniors, represented by Paul Heilman and Dave Van Noord, won the contest by devouring 29 bananas. The spirit accumulated during the week was let loose at the victorious Homecoming Game on Friday. The Homecoming game was a tough defensive battle, but the Eagles’ great teamwork and enthusiasm won out. Among the high points were Ray Bentley’s twenty tackles along with a fum- ble recovery. Don Hirdes played like a winner with two fantastic interceptions. Hudsonville's offensive team ended up with 135 yards rushing with Todd Damon contributing 61 yards and Ray Bentley with 43. The evening was highlighted by Bill Nelson's 32 yard field goal, which broke the tie, giving the Eagles an exciting 10-7 victory. The conclusion — another Eagle victory and extremely happy Eagle fans. Eagles Reign At Homecoming 11 Administration Board of Education — Roy Anderson. Dale Yntema. Wesley Wiggers. James Brandt. Mark Wuttenga ill BYE BYE BIRDIE Bye Bye Birdie is a musical comedy that tells the story of how a young teenage girl from a small town is chosen to bestow a farewell kiss on Con- rad Birdie, a big rock singing star, who is going into the army. Fame becomes a real problem for the girl’s father, Harry McAfee, especially when he finds out that his family will be appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. Many funny incidents lead to a happy ending for all involved. The cast and crew devoted many long hours of hard work to make this musical one of Hudsi's more successful productions. 112 CAST OF CHARACTERS Albert Peterson Tim Tacoma Rosie Alvarez Diane VanderSchuur Henry MacAfee Steve Poortenga Mrs MacAfee Sheryl Baar Kim MacAfee Bev Kauala Randolph MacAfee Kurt VanderSchuur Conrad Birdie Brian Nemecek Hugh Peabody Steve Meppelink Mrs Mae Peterson Kim Valkier Gloria Rasputin Sarah Veltman Ursula Merkie Deb Papp Mrs Merkie Kim Kelder Deborah Sue Laurie Hoezee Margie Janet Smedley Alice Dawn Leenheer Sad Little Girl Cathryn Ensing Fred Dean Poppena Karl Jerry Van Strien Harvey Johnson Ron Bolhuis Arthur Dan Avmk Helen Amy McClow Penelope Val Wilbur Mayor Dave Myaard Mayor's Wife Sue Huf Phyllis Darla Van Strien Policeman Ray Bentley Trainman Bill Renkema Lee Don Miesen Mr. Johnson Dwight Sneden Ed Sullivan Bill Ten Have Bartender Director Mrs Sue Sprik Music Director Mr Dean Nederveld Student Director Sara Lawrence Accompanist Diane Edema Jack Ocobock 113 Madrigals 114 Front Row: Brian Nemecek. In addition to having the best reg- ular season record the team set records for most hits (163), runs scored (129), runs bat- ted in (82), most walks (100), fewest strike outs (108), and highest team batting aver- age (.291). The team played with a lot of class and poise, winning several one-run games, beating one Red Division team, two White Division teams, and the Grand Rapids City League Champs West Catholic (by a 10-0 score). A significant factor in the suc- cess of the team was confidence. This was illustrated best perhaps during one game when the team scored 3 runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-3 win. Although only 3 players were picked for the All-Conference recognition, many contributed to the outstanding season with a key hit or an important defensive play or just a lot of enthusiasm. Greg Van Geest was picked for the second straight year as an outfielder on the Blue Division team with Klay De Vree selected as a pitcher and Ed Stinson, who had the 2nd highest season batting average (.433) for a Huds'onville player, was voted in at shortstop. 5 133 . From their split sessions, to their cheer- leading clinics, their enthusiasm and spirit has come through. They’ve proven cheerleaders do more than cheer at games and pep assemblies. They’re a part of the team. This year’s Varsity squad has really worked hard rais- ing spirit with new ideas and dynamic enthusiasm. The Junior Varsity has come a long way and are doing great! The freshmen worked at their skills, cheers, and chants and did a fantastic job. All squads have been especially supportive and it was really appreciated. On an individual basis, sophomore Paul De Boer had the team’s best overall stroke average with a 40.7 for each 9 holes played. Seniors Ron Bol- huis and Bill Ten Have ended four years of Varsity golf with 41.2 and 42.4 averages respectively. Sophomore Mark Warren playing in his first year of competition had a fine 43.6 average, followed by Brian Borchers with 44.7, and Kris De Vree with 45.7. There were five seniors: June Beld, Relinda Zimmerman, Jodi Reister, Brenda Woodworth, and Jadyne Meredith returning from the tri-champion team of last year. The juniors brought with them a great deal of talent which included the spiking of Judy Kunzi, Kristi Vruggink, and Deb Karsten; the setting of Nancy Van Noord, and the consistent passing and hustle of Diane Heemstra, LuAnn Parker, and Tina Stinson. The team as a whole was lacking the vital playing experience needed to defeat the non-conference teams that we played at the beginning of our season. The team was not used to such defeats and with better communication and hustle, they played in a city league tournament at Ottawa Hills and finished 7-3 for the day. They lost to Grand Rapids Christian, split with North- view, and defeated Ottawa Hills, West Catholic, and Catholic Central. 163 J.V. Volleyball Front Row: Kim Plummert. Linda Westhuis. Lori Daldos.
