There is only one success — to be able to spend your life in your own way. — Christopher Morley Homecoming Teachers Treshmen Sophomores Juniors Table of Contents Night Ufe During Homecoming week, the night life was both hectic and exciting. Every night brought forth the opportunity to work on the floats. At least it was possible to stand around and watch, if so desired. The spirit built all week, partly due to the bonfire of the effigy of a Comstock Park player on Wednesday night. By Friday night everyone was ready for a good game. Comstock Park was first to score, but soon after it was all Hudsie. In the second quarter, Mike Vruggink intercepted a pass, returning it for 43 yards. This set up our first touch- down. Halftime activities found the school’s royalty to be King Bob Hassevoort and Queen Pam Vander Kolk, while the Jun- iors won the float competition. The third quarter gave the Eagles 27 more points. Ray Bentley and Greg Van Geest connected for a pair of touch- downs, Bentley ran for another, while Aaron Fletcher pushed one in for our final touchdown. 8 M J' I SPIRIT WEEK This year Spirit Week consisted of Kiddies Day, Clash Day, 50's Day, But tons and Bows Day Slave Day, and good old Maize and Blue Day. Stu- dents and teachers showed their spirit by dressing up in crazy costumes throughout the week. Although all the classes showed a lot erf enthusiasm, the Freshmen won the competition. At the Homecoming Pep Assembly, Dan Harries, Fresh- man Class President, was presented the money collected during the week and 25% of the money received from the Slave Auction that took place on Wednesday. Seniors Pam and Ed Xvttvb 'sti v. A 17 LEADERS 18 DEDICATION The Yearbook Staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Marvin Overway, Superintendent of Schools. Dear Friends, We would like to thank you for your friendship and kind- ness to us while we were here in the United States. Before we came to Hudsonville, we were afraid because we did not know anyone and could not speak English very well. Now we have made many new friends and learned many new things about American life. We would also like to thank the Reisters, Smallegans, Veldhuizens, and Van Bronkhorsts. They have been very kind to us. Please come and visit us if you ever travel to Guatemala or Colombia. CHEERLEADING The cheerleaders have worked hard in trying to raise spirit here at Hudsie this year. They’ve dis- covered that cheerleading is much more than doing the school song at pep assemblies and leading cheers at games. They have learned that it is the responsibility that comes with being rep- resentatives for their school and the fulfillment that comes from knowing they’ve done their best to support their team. They’ve also found it fun in working together as a team. Cheerleading is a sport which requires skill, work, and enthusiasm to produce winning squads such as the J.V. and Varsity cheerleaders, who placed first at the Hope College Clinic this January. Good work girls! A special thanks goes to Mrs. Burkey who has given her time and help to make our cheerleaders the best ever. Their league record of 7 wins and 0 losses gave them the O.K. Blue championship. Some of the factors contributing to the Eagle’s success was their fighting attitude and their ability to work together as a team. A unique coaching aspect this year was the estab- lishment of a pyramid to success made up of 7 steps. These steps were 1)Hustle 2)Desire 3)Spirit 4)Aggressiveness 5)Team Work 6)Sportsmanship 7)Self-Discipline. These steps were built upon the strong foundation of pride. Pride was left undefined to be defined by each player after he experienced it. The 7 steps with an overall theme of pride, com- bined with great coaching and super team effort, brought a victorious season. The team’s tri-captains were Mike Vruggink, Randy Klawiter, and Bob Hassevoort. There were five players that received the honor of being named All-Conference at their position. They were: Mike Vruggink at Offensive Guard, Greg Van Geest at Offensive Back, Ray Bentley at Defensive Line- backer, and Klay DeVree at Defensive Back. Randy Klawiter received the special honor of being named All-Conference at both Offensive and Defensive Tackle. Receiving honorable mentions were Mel Lacy at Center, Steve Wise at Noseguard, and Ed Stinson at Offensive End. At the Third Annual Football Awards Banquet the speaker was Mr. Morley Fraser, former head coach and athletic director at Albion College. The 1977 team awards were as follows: Most Valuable Player — Ray Bentley; Most Valuable Offensive Player — Greg Van Geest; Most Valuable Defensive Player — Ray Bentley; Value Award — Randy Klawiter; Sacri- fice Award — Mike Vruggink; Most Improved — Aaron Fletcher and Bill Ter Molen.
